Reel Philosophers - First Rule: Talk About Fight Club
\***Free with promocode** \- details below
Friedrich Nietzsche once said, āHe who has a why to live can bear almost any how.ā
āDavid Fincherās 1999 film Fight Club tells us that even those of us whose lives appear successful and desirable tend to lack this significant āwhyā. We will examine how a crisis of meaning and fractured subjectivity drive the filmās characters to seek identity, authenticity, and meaning through violence and underground ritual. Together, weāll ask whether Fight Club points to possibilities beyond nihilism, or merely exposes the dangerous seduction of creating meaning in a world that feels empty.
ā**Please note that we'll screen film clips only, not the entire film.**
āInspired by ancient Greek symposia, Reel Philosophers nights help sharpen **critical thinking** through film discussions, gently guided by professional philosophers.
āPhilosophy meets art at the [Vorboss](https://vorboss.com/) office, connecting the local business community.

All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 132 / Amadeus
Amadeus is a 1984 American period drama film directed by MiloÅ” Forman. Peter Shaffer adapted it from his 1979 stage play, inspired by Alexander Pushkin's 1830 play Mozart and Salieri. Shaffer described it as a "fantasia on [a real-life] theme", as it imagines a rivalry between two 18th-century Vienna composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) and Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). Salieri struggles to reconcile his professional admiration and jealous hatred for Mozart, and resolves to ruin Mozart's career as his form of vengeance against God. It was nominated for 53 awards and won 40, including 8 Academy Awards (including Best Picture), four BAFTA Awards, and four Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture ā Drama). Abraham and Hulce were both nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, with Abraham winning. In 1998, the American Film Institute ranked it 53rd on its 100 Years... 100 Movies list. In 2019, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. Itās just a discussion. Itās not a screening. š
We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema.

Silver Tuesdays Nordic Walking in Brockwell Park
Over the last nine years, Silverfit has been able to offer exercise to everyone over 50 in Brockwell Park. Together with Silverfit, I have done my best to keep the exercise fun for everyone, no matter if you are fit or not so fit, strong or not so strong, sporty or not so sporty.
And, over all, I think we have done that pretty well! We have had some glorious years, and we made many, many friends over that time.
Silverfit managed to keep it going through the good times and the hard Covid years, but unfortunately, the reality of the current economic climate is hitting Silverfit hard. Many councils and charities that have supported Silverfit over the years have stopped funding, and without funding, Silverfit just simply cannot keep going.
Recently, they have had to take the hard decision to cut quite a number of their activities, and unfortunately, Nordic Walking in Brockwell park is one of the sessions that needs to be stopped.
Yesterday afternoon was our last session for Silverfit.
Butā¦. I aim to keep your Tuesday walk going!
So many of you love our Tuesday session, and it would just be too sad to stop completely.
I would like to keep the Silver Tuesday session going under my own company, Fit and Happy Outdoors.
Sadly, I cannot do this for free, as I do need to make a living. But in order to keep this session available for everyone, I plan to keep our Tuesday afternoon session at a highly reduced rate compared to my normal rates.
New rates for our Silver Tuesday walks:
10 sessions for £45 (my normal rate is 10 sessions for £90).
For those of you who struggle financially, I am happy to reduce this rate to £30, or even offer it for free.
I can of course only do this if enough of you pay the normal rate, and I trust you will only ask for a reduction if you really need it. As I said, I do this for my living, but I donāt want money to be the reason you miss out on the benefits of Nordic Walking and spending time with our lovely group of friends.
If you are already a member of Fit and Happy Outdoors and you pay monthly, then the Tuesday session is included in your fee. No extra payment is necessary (unless youād like to sponsor someone who cannot pay)
How does it work?
1) Please email me at Ailien at Fitandhappyoutdoors dot com, and let me know if you agree with me sending you an invoice for the full rate, or if you need a reduced rate.
2) I will then send you an invoice with my bank details on it.
3) Once I have received your payment in my bank account, I will hand you a 10-session card at the first session I see you
4) Every time you come walking on Tuesday, I will stamp your card
5) Once you have walked 10 times, I will send you a new invoice for the next 10.
Payment: I really, really, prefer bank transfers.
If you really do not do bank transfers, then you can pay me in cash. No cheques please (I really try to avoid having to go to the bank, it is just too much hassle).
If you or a friend only comes once in a very blue moon, then they can pay Ā£5 in cash for the session (only banknotes please. Help a girl out, I do enough weightlifting already š)
Are you a walk leader? You are always welcome and do not have to pay me. I am grateful for your help!
Do we still need to sign up?
1) Have your own poles? No need to sign up. But, if there is a weather warning, please check in with me as I might have to cancel and if I donāt know you are planning to come, I might not be able to tell you itās cancelled
2) Happy to use the Meetup app, then sign up for your walk here? If you sign in, I will know you are planning to come, and it will be easy for me to let you know if I do need to cancel a session.
3) Need to borrow poles from me? Please text me ON THE DAY OF THE WALK to ask me to bring a set. My number is 078 078 3456 4. Just use normal text, no Whatsapp please, as I will probably miss your message.
Any questions? Feel free to reply to this email, or text me on the number above.

Philosophy means the love of wisdom, and being a philosopher essentially means having an active attitude and awareness towards life.
We are all born philosophers, with a natural need to ask questions and with the intuition that there are answers to be found. Every civilisation has tried to pass on its wisdom, leaving us a vast heritage of useful knowledge and experiences to rediscover.
Explore the timeless ideas that have inspired and guided humanity throughout history and their relevance and practical application for our lives.
This first evening can be attended for £10 as a standalone introduction to **Philosophies of East & West** however if you are interested in learning more about the full 18-week course and applying, please visit [philosophiesofeastandwest.org](https://www.philosophiesofeastandwest.org/ "https://www.philosophiesofeastandwest.org/")
Practical Philosophy Meetup - London š¬š§
**šļø WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no āofficialā philosophy knowledge required! š
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community š
š **HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itās important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 13:45-14:00 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the āofficial' start.
* 14:00-14:05 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 14:05-14:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ājump-offā questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itās not obligatory to answer them.
* 14:45 - We do a group conclusion of the things we discussed, and then we typically take a photo and go on our way :) If you don't want to be in the group photo, there's no pressure, it's just a way to close out the meeting. You are free to walk around Calthorpe's Community Gardens afterwards.
**š§§PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend, and we operate on donations.
Calthorpe Cabin costs £40 per hour to rent.
If you'd like to donate to support the cost of the location, that helps keep our group self-sustaining. Donations are 100% voluntary, but your contribution is appreciated! QR codes to donate and a donation jar will be present.
Calthorpe charges £4 per person for tea's and coffees and are paid by the individual should they wish to have them.
**š WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
š£ āI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatās right and wrongā - Ekam
š£ āI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.ā - Daniel
**š¤ FAQ**
* āWhat will we talk about? What's the topic?
āThe topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you donāt see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isnāt a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weāll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donāt meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
š¤**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
**PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY - Making Philosophy Available To All.** āØ

Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. Hope to see you on March 28th!
Celebrate National Chip and Dip Day!
***Okay, call me crazy but you have got to try their chip n dip!*** Club 185 is a true hidden gem in German Village! Seriously, old school, good comfort food and drink. We will try to gather in spaces near the windows. While we'll share Chip n Dip, you'll want to order a sandwich, too.
**Where the Chip Began (1817)**
Potato chips can be traced back to an English chef, William Kitchiner, who includes ācrispsā in his bestselling cookbook, āThe Cookās Oracle.ā
**Chip and Dip Popularity**
The popularity of chip and dip skyrockets at the end of World War II with new entertainment fads and the introduction of Liptonās new advertising campaign for their famous French Onion Dip. (Club 185 doesn't openly admit it, but I'm pretty sure that's their dip recipe!)
**[Club 185](http://club185.com/)**āa true neighborhood bar serving since 1954, when it was known as a local 'speak-easy'. Located in German Village, Club 185 features a menu of quality casual comfort food and full bar. From politicians to lawyers, hardhats to hipstersāall find Club 185 the perfect place to tame their hunger and quench their thirst!

Spring Flex Season
**How does a TennisColumbus Season / League run?**
The league advertises the season dates and builds a queue of committed players for the season.
**Kickoff Day - March 26th**
The start day of the season, players are sent a kickoff email that contains important information about the league, the link where your league standings and players contact information. We guarantee 6 playing partners at your playing level, but have been averaging closer to 15+ partners in most cities. The number of different levels we run is solely based upon the number of players enrolled for the league kickoff. Typically we are running a Skilled-3.0, Competitive-3.5 and Advanced-4.0 in most cities.
**Your Task - "Flexible Scheduling"**
After this kickoff email is sent, it is the **player's task to communicate with other players**. Players should work with their partners to find an agreeable time and location to play the match. While TennisColumbus doesn't mandate your playing schedule, it is recommended that players schedule at least one match per week. By request of the players, we started to allow players to play 1 rematch per season. The regular season is all about playing as much as you can. As of Feb. 10, 2026 we've had an amazing 2,017 players play more than [20 matches in a season](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/info/MatchesInSeason).
**Where to Play?**
Play at your local free tennis courts, tennis parks, condo courts or tennis clubs. The league strongly suggests that players jointly try to pick a tennis court location convenient to both. We provide an extensive list of [tennis courts](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/TennisCourts), including # of courts, lighting, hitting walls, etc. We strive to keep this list up-to-date.
TennisColumbus sets up a must play dates to push players out on the courts. The final deadline is the date marking the end of the season, at which point players with 3-5 wins (Actually total is specified on the division page) will qualify for a post-season playoff to determine the league champion.
**How to Play?**
Players can use three mostly standard playing formats: 2 out of 3 sets, 2 sets with 10 point super tie-breaker or the 10-game pro set (First to 10, used when court time is limited). On Feb. 2018, we added Fast Tennis 4 game pro set format as a valid format.
**Playoffs**
Each season concludes with a playoffs where players with anywhere from 3 to 5 season wins qualifies for a single elimination tourney. The champion is awarded based upon the league [Prize Pool](https://www.tenniscolumbus.com/info/prize_pool3). Each singles league champion also receives a playing entry into one of two national championships we run.
