Conor Hoekstra - Parrot : Array GPU Programming
**Abstract:**
This talk introduces a new high-level CUDA C++ library that brings functional, array-style programming to GPUs - without compromising performance. With a fluent API that slashes boilerplate and minimizes kernel launches, it enables you to write expressive, high-performance GPU code with up to 10× less code. This talk explores how functional patterns can unlock both clarity and speed in GPU development.
**Speaker: Conor Hoekstra**
Research Scientist at NVIDIA working on array programming models and languages. Creator of the [Parrot](https://nvlabs.github.io/parrot/) library (a high-level, array-based library with implicit GPU fusion). Extremely passionate about programming languages, algorithms, and beautiful code. Founder and organizer of the [Programming Languages Virtual Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/Programming-Languages-Toronto-Meetup/). Host of four podcasts and an avid conference speaker.
Rainbow Toastmasters Toronto
Welcome to **Rainbow Toastmasters Toronto**! Join us for a fun and welcoming public speaking event at **St. Andrew's United Church, Toronto**. Whether you're a seasoned speaker or just starting, our diverse group of members will provide a supportive environment for you to improve your communication skills. Come share your stories, practice your speeches, and meet new friends in a safe and inclusive space. Don't miss out on this opportunity to grow personally and professionally. See you there!

We start promptly at 7:00 pm, so arriving between 6:30 and 6:45 would be appreciated. Guests are welcome to participate when comfortable.
[In-person] Curiosity Café — Hope, Despair, & Climate Action
For several decades, scientists worldwide have described the impending future (and now, the present circumstance) as a “climate crisis” or a “climate emergency”. People now know that there is very little time to implement strategies to mitigate climate change before irreversible climate danger occurs. Given this, fear and despair seem like natural responses and motivators for action; we want to avoid, or at least mitigate, a future more apocalyptic than our present already is. However, hope might, alternatively, seem like a necessary tool for envisioning a safe and sustainable future as well, where climate justice is achieved.
When it comes to the climate crisis, do you find yourself responding primarily with a sense of hope, or a sense of despair? Which of these responses do you see as being the more effective guiding sentiment when it comes to climate action?
Join returning moderator Jasmine Tremblay D’Ettorre and Sophia Whicher at our next *Revisited* Curiosity Café, where we will explore the intricate relationship between these concepts in a discussion that is both thought-provoking and intriguing. We will explore the ethical – and emotional – dimensions of our responses to the climate crisis, so be ready to reflect, question, challenge, and expand your thinking!
**Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-revisited-hope-despair-and-climate-action-tickets-1987289833388) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle.
Hope to see you there!
*Every four(ish) weeks, we revisit a previous Curiosity Café. In this series, we will be repeating topics, sometimes with a slight twist, sometimes with the same questions (but rest assured, even if you went to the first iteration and the questions were exactly the same, the discussion will change based on who is in attendance. Maybe you’ve even changed too…).*

This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us.
By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.
Find out more about Being and Becoming [here](https://beingnbecoming.org/).
About the Curiosity Café Series:
For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.

Long to learn more about the rich history of the Toronto Islands? Participants will spot some amazing houses, creep by a haunted lighthouse, walk on a rainbow, see a giant hedge maze, and more.
This is a dog friendly walk . So leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome.

We will return on the 9:45PM ferry from Ward's Island.
While paths are all lit, participants may want to bring headlights/flashlights for improved visibility.
Upon arrival, pay your ferry fare and then look for me in the waiting area. I'll be holding a Jane's Walk sign. I may even borrow a dog or two for this adventure.
From Tests to Trust: How QA Creates Value Outlasting Tech Shift | Toronto Meetup
The Test Tribe 13th Toronto Meetup – From Tests to Trust: How QA Creates Value That Outlasts Technology Shifts
Tools change.
Frameworks evolve.
AI reshapes workflows.
But one thing remains constant: the expectation that QA delivers value.
In a world of rapid technological change, the real question isn’t what tools we use - it’s how QA creates trust, clarity, and better decisions across teams.
At the 13th Toronto Meetup, we step back from tools and trends to explore a deeper question: What does quality really mean to the business - and how can QA deliver it consistently, regardless of technology shifts?
**Event Details**
* **Date: April 29th, 2026 (Wednesday)**
* **Time: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM ET**
* **Venue: Tribal Scale**
* **Maps Link:** https://maps.app.goo.gl/hqUyAVXKLQhPFsUK6?g_st=ic
**Session: From Tests to Trust: How QA Creates Value That Outlasts Technology Shifts**
**Speaker: Youssef Menkhour**
**About the Session**
Technology in QA is evolving rapidly - but expectations from stakeholders often remain unchanged.
In this session, Youssef Menkhour brings a QA Director’s perspective to explore:
* What different roles (engineering, product, business) actually expect from testing
* How QA creates value indirectly, beyond test execution
* Why traditional outputs - tests, reports, meetings - often fail to drive real decisions
* How to simplify QA practices to better support clarity, alignment, and impact
This talk challenges conventional thinking and focuses on how QA can move beyond activity-driven work to become a driver of trust and decision-making within organizations.
**Key Takeaways**
* Understand what stakeholders truly expect from QA
* Learn how QA delivers value beyond test cases and execution
* Simplify testing outputs to better support real decisions
* Shift from activity-driven QA to impact-driven quality engineering
* Build practices that remain relevant across changing technologies
**About the Speaker**
Youssef Menkhour is a Director of Quality Assurance with 15+ years of experience leading enterprise and SaaS-focused QA organizations across industries including insurance, banking, media, and telecommunications.
At Alithya, he advises clients on quality modernization, helping organizations adopt automation-first strategies, shift-left testing, and CI/CD-aligned delivery models.
Youssef is passionate about redefining QA’s role - from a supporting function to a strategic contributor that drives trust, alignment, and long-term value.
**Why You Should Attend**
* Gain a leadership perspective on the future of QA
* Learn how to create value beyond tools and frameworks
* Understand how to align QA work with business outcomes
* Rethink how testing supports decision-making
* Connect with Toronto’s QA and tech community
**About The Test Tribe**

Connection Labs Online (aka Crossroads & Connections)
### Each Crossroads & Connections workshop is a fast, friendly mash-up: short demos, paired practices and intentional reflection. We keep it light, embodied, and social—so wisdom lands in your muscles and your circle, not only your mind. There isn’t one technique that fixes everything, for everyone, in every situation.
### What is it?
We pair complementary domains to spark shared flow, fresh insight, and unforgettable “aha!” moments. You leave with lived skills, not just notes.
* **Dialogue** gets you out of solo spin: small-group formats expose blind spots and sharpen “shared reality,” so your next move matches *this* person and *this* moment.
* **Imaginal** practice is guided “as if” rehearsal you look *through*, not *at*: walking the beats before the scene means your body recognizes turns when stakes rise.
* **Mindfulness** steadies the camera: attention stops jerking around, drama gets de-amplified, and you can catch the instant you’re narrating motives and swap in one honest question.
* **Embodiment** makes it actionable through direct, non-verbal experience and how your inner experience matches your outer expression.
Facilitators: Varies
Fee: $30USD - Or a 10-pack for $200USD

The Lytic Threshold
**This is a ticketed event. Please register at [this link](https://luma.com/gprawfks).**
In this talk, Sheikh Abdur Raheem Ali:
1) Discusses rare cases where deployed LLMs have been observed to engage in self-directed behavior which would have led to catastrophic outcomes if the agent escaping containment were equipped with stronger capabilities.
2) Introduces arbitrium, a peptide-based communication method used by certain bacteriophages which release small molecules known as autoinducers to decide coordinated population-level behavior, and in particular lytic and lysogenic pathways, with a quorum-sensing mechanism.
3) Explores landmark results from alignment science which inform our current understanding of LLM biology (<250 malicious documents required to poison training datasets vs <100 viral particles required to produce infection in humans).
4) Analyzes early findings from experiments which attempt to investigate scalable improvements to defenses that monitor the internal activations of production transformer models (such as probes) and demonstrates how these enable targeted interventions on known distributions which are more difficult to achieve with input/output only methods (such as prompted classifiers) in certain cases (such as long context windows or latent reasoning models)
**Event Schedule**
6:00 to 6:30 - Food and introductions
6:30 to 7:30 - Presentation and Q&A
7:30 to 9:00 - Open Discussions
If you can't make it in person, feel free to join the live stream starting at 6:30 pm, via [this link](https://www.youtube.com/@Trajectory-Labs/live).
