Codeaholics 2026.1 with ExpressVPN
Welcome back to Codeaholics!
We will kickstart our 2026 collaborating with ExpressVPN!
**Talk#1: The Pain of Processing PDFs** by **Angus Cheng**
Reading PDFs is very difficult, here's what I've learnt over the last five years running a SaaS that processes PDFs
**Talk#2: Why does ExpressVPN switch from C to Rust for Lightway’s code?** by **Thomas Leong**
We built Lightway from scratch in a quest to offer a VPN protocol that serves the needs of VPN users in a modern, mobile world—one that’s fast, secure, and reliable. Since launching Lightway five years ago, we’ve had it open-sourced and audited, as well as implementing key upgrades. We have just rolled out a new version of Lightway to users—one that sees our pioneering VPN protocol rewritten in Rust programming language. For this technical talk, we wanted to take a moment to discuss some of the more technical reasons behind the changes we’ve made and dive into the benefits of Rust over C, the language we originally used for Lightway code.

**Why we host the event in Central Market?**
In 1990, the Central Market building was graded as a Grade III historic building by the Antiquities Advisory Board.
After multiple rounds of study and consultation, the revitalization project for the Central Market building began in October 2017. Upon completion, a portion of the market stalls will be preserved.
the Central Market's historical significance makes it an attractive venue for hosting various types of events that can celebrate Hong Kong's rich heritage and cultural identity. Please grab a dink and enjoy!

Cycling: Tai Wai MTR to Tai Mei Tuk (Plover Dam)
**Cycling: Tai Wai MTR to Tai Mei Tuk (Plover Dam)**
**Difficulty Level:** 2.5 out of 5
**Distance:** 50 km
**Time:** 5-6 hours
**Bike Rental Fee:** About 200 HKD for the Whole Day
**Description:** This event is "geared" for individuals that enjoy cycling on fully-paved and bike-only paths (no vehicles). The only time we'll be on a surface with vehicles is when we need to cross the streets using the safety strips and the traffic lights. The plan is to cycle from Tai Wai to Plover Dam and back. The roundtrip course is 50 km. If you opt for a shorter distance (25 km), it is possible to leave your bike at the halfway point and then transport back to Tai Wai via bus.
**Important: It is your responsibility to select a bike that is a "right fit" for you and it is your responsibility to decide if you will be wearing a bike helmet.**
**Some highlights:** We'll ride along the bike path that hugs the Shing Mun River and continue riding along the coastline of Tolo Harbour towards Tai Mei Tuk and Plover Dam.
**What to bring:**
* 2 liters of water (water available for sale along the way)
* Snacks to eat along the way (sandwich, fruits, nuts, etc)
* Comfortable shoes
* Sunglasses
* Headgear (cap/hat)
* Sunscreen
* Bug Spray
* In case of Rain: plan accordingly
**Toilets:** There are plenty of toilets along the way.
**Stores:** There are several cafes along the way and at the halfway point there are full-service restaurants where we can all sit down and enjoy our lunch.
**Meeting Point:** Tai Wai MTR Station - Exit A
**Time:** 10:00 am (SHARP)
**IMPORTANT:** Out of respect to the members that arrive on time, we will only be able to wait a maximum of 5 minutes. Should you arrive after 10:05 am, I will no longer be answering phone calls or responding to messages as I need to give my time and attention to those that have arrived on time.

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.
Fast track
• Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell).
• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
• Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
