CLH Talks | Weird Science: an introduction to anomalistic psychology
**This talk starts at 7 PM, please join us from 6:30 PM.**
**The science behind paranormal phenomena**
Opinion polls show the majority of the general public accepts that paranormal phenomena do occur. Such widespread experience of and belief in the paranormal can only mean one of two things. Either the paranormal is real, in which case this should be accepted by the wider scientific community which currently rejects such claims; or else belief in and experience of ostensibly paranormal phenomena can be fully explained in terms of psychological factors.
**Psychological and physical explanations**
This presentation will provide an introduction to the sub-discipline of anomalistic psychology, which may be defined as the study of extraordinary phenomena of behaviour and experience, in an attempt to provide non-paranormal explanations in terms of known psychological and physical factors. This approach will be illustrated with examples relating to a range of ostensibly paranormal phenomena.
**Our Speaker**
**Chris French** is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychology, Goldsmiths, University of London, where, up until 2024, he was also Head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit. He retired from Goldsmiths in 2020.
He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, and a patron of Humanists UK. He has published over 200 articles and chapters covering a wide range of topics within psychology. His main area of research is the psychology of paranormal beliefs and anomalous experiences. He writes for the *Guardian* and the *Skeptic* magazine. His most recent book is *[The Science of Weird Shit: Why Our Minds Conjure the Paranormal](https://amzn.eu/d/0dFVfCYG)*[ (2024, MIT Press)](https://amzn.eu/d/0dFVfCYG).

TEiP SPECIAL SERIES: LIVING WITH TECH • S1E2: THE WAY WE CONNECT
The second episode in our special series designed to open different conversations about AI, tech, and their impact on our lives.
(Substack about our rationale for this event series [here](https://open.substack.com/pub/experimentsingroupwisdom/p/bored-of-having-the-same-conversation?r=445zi1&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true) 😊)
We’ll use the typical THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS (TEiP) method of getting into great conversations: small group discussions, tiny imaginary stories, lots of questions, and many opportunities to shuffle groups (more detail below).
**The thought experiments for these events are written by special guest writer and TEiP regular, Francesca.** She’s in the middle of a fellowship at Newspeak House (London College of Political Technology) and has her finger on the pulse of many issues related to technology and its impact on our lives. (You can find her writing [here](https://themagpiebrain.substack.com/)).
As Francesca alludes to in one of her thought experiments: **discussing concepts and ideas with other people (rather than asking ChatGPT) is like going to the gym for your mind.** But as anyone who has been to TEiP will know, TEiP’s lighthearted and playful atmosphere means that it’s more like a fun dance workout than crossfit or weightlifting.
**How we'll do it** (timings approximate):
* 7:00pm - Arrive at Newspeak House. Nearest station Shoreditch High Street.
* Organise ourselves into small groups (3-4).
* Have a look at the thought experiments (announced on the day of the event)
* 7:15 - Introduction to the event
* 7:20 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to veer off topic and pursue new avenues of conversation.
* 7:45 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment.
* 8:15 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment.
* 8:45pm - Wrap up - votes to discern general views of the room; info about upcoming events; feedback/requests for future meetups.
* 9:00 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. We have the room until 10 :-)
**Notes on the general atmosphere:**
* The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic.
* While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough!
* Feel free to suggest ideas for future THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss.
**Where we'll meet:**
This group will be at NEWSPEAK HOUSE. The nearest Overground Station is Shoreditch High Street. Nearby Tube stations: Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Old Street, and Liverpool Street. You can access the venue step-free on the ground floor. Bathrooms are available at the venue.
**Please note: There is no bar at the venue, but you are very welcome to bring your own drinks.**
**Who should come:**
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about doing philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc....

Circling drop in evening
Circling is a present-moment relational awareness practice. We’re bringing our attention to what’s unfolding in real time, repeatedly returning to what’s happening within ourselves, between us and in the shared space of the group.
We practice approaching our own experience and the experience of others with curiosity, becoming more aware of the subtleties of what is present. The emphasis is on staying in contact with your experience as it unfolds. The unfolding may be quiet and internal or it may lead to words – naming sensations, thoughts, emotions, impulses or perceptions. It might also include movement or other non-verbal expression. The idea is not to try to change what’s there, but to become more aware of what it is and how we are meeting it and relating to it in the moment.
Often awareness follows expression and this is okay too. We are all swimming in the ocean of the unknown. Occasionally the whale lifts its head above the surface and we catch a glimpse – a moment of seeing something about ourselves that we hadn’t noticed before.
Over time, many people find that this kind of awareness practice deepens their sense of aliveness and helps them notice patterns in how they relate to themselves and others. With ongoing practice, some people discover an increased capacity to be with themselves and others in a more conscious, grounded, flexible and responsive way – where we can experience ourselves as active participants in our lives rather than passive reactors to what is happening internally or around us.
Both those new to Circling and those with more experience are very welcome.

We’ll start at 7pm (arrive from 6.50pm) and will finish at 9pm. There will be some optional hang out time after 9pm.
Opposite Elephant & Castle tube and Thameslink train station, and numerous bus routes.
**Facilitation and Terms of Service**
This is a facilitated group practice but not group therapy and not psychotherapy. Because of my NARM background and own personal journey, I value personal choice, agency and emergent self-awareness. Participants are encouraged to stay connected to their own pace and to keep checking in with themselves throughout the practice – noticing what feels supportive, what feels like too much, and what they may need in any moment.
There’s no expectation to be vulnerable or to share anything that feels too personal or emotional and you are always welcome to speak, remain silent, pause, step back and take a break, leave or ask for what you want, including asking for support. Participants are also invited to respect one another’s pace and boundaries.
The intention of my Circling leadership is to support myself and people in staying present with their experience while in relationship with others, and to develop greater awareness of how they are meeting that experience. Having said that, like solo meditation, it’s normal that we will all repeatedly lose presence and Circling can sometimes evoke strong emotions or reactions in people which can be difficult for them and challenging for others in the space to navigate. If you find the prospect of this potentially destabilising or overwhelming, or if you are currently experiencing significant emotional distress or instability in your life that might be exacerbated by this type of group environment, or if you are unsure you’ll be able to take care of yourself and ensure the practice works for you, then please contact me before registering so we can discuss further.
By registering you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the above.
Assisted Dying: A Moral Question
For this special session, we’re trying something a little different. Instead of the usual introductory talk, the evening will begin with a short live debate on one of the most pressing and controversial moral questions of our time: **the morality of assisted dying**.
Camden Bassett (Veins of London Meetup) and Roger Jones (host of Philosophy Café London) will each take a position and present a brief opening argument, responding to one another in real time. The aim is not to “win” the debate, but to clarify the issues, sharpen the arguments, and open up the discussion for everyone in the room.
After that, the emphasis is on discussion and participation. The aim is to create a space where ideas can be explored together, with time for questions, reflection, and open conversation.
No prior knowledge is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to think together.
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm
**Format:** 10-minute intro talk → vote on questions → small-group discussions → share insights with the whole room
**Discounts:** If cost is a barrier, we want to make the session as accessible as possible. If you are a student, unemployed, or on a low income, please feel free to send me a direct message to get a reduced-price place.
**Refunds:** If you are unable to attend and would like a refund, please send me a direct message at least 48 hours before the event. Unfortunately, I’m not able to offer refunds for cancellations made after this point, as it becomes difficult to reallocate places at short notice.

Speed Speaking, Express & Connect
Want to become more confident speaking in front of others, without the pressure of formal public speaking?
This event is designed to help you **build confidence in speaking naturally, expressing your thoughts more freely, and feeling more comfortable using your voice in everyday life and in front of a group.**
Due to the growing interest in our Speed Speaking event, we’ve now moved it to Sunday so more people can join and enjoy the experience together.
So, what actually happens?
We gather in a relaxed, welcoming circle and take turns responding to short, playful, and thought-provoking prompts.
Some questions are lighthearted and funny, while others spark curiosity, reflection, or unexpected conversations.
You’ll have **up to two minutes per turn**, just enough time to express yourself without pressure, and everyone gets several opportunities to speak throughout the session.
Each round introduces a fresh topic and a new invitation to share. There’s no need to perform, impress anyone, or “say the right thing.”
The goal is simply to practice speaking in a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to be themselves.
You’re always free to actively participate or simply listen and absorb the atmosphere.
Either way, you’ll be surrounded by warmth, kindness, laughter, and encouraging people.
What makes this experience special is how naturally confidence begins to grow. Without forcing anything, you slowly become more at ease speaking up, sharing your thoughts, and trusting your own voice, both in public speaking and in daily conversations.
Come for the conversation, stay for the connection, and leave feeling lighter, more confident, and more comfortable being yourself 💛
The event is completely **free**, and no ticket is needed.
**Please arrive in front of Arundel Building between 14:40 and 14:55**
Then we will head up together to the room on the 5th floor and begin the session at 15:00 promptly.
To keep the experience smooth and uninterrupted for everyone, entry won’t be possible after 15:00
Please RSVP in advance and keep your attendance status updated, as the activities and flow of the event are planned around the number of participants.
Public Speaking Practice Thursdays
Come and get the chance to speak in a supportive and friendly environment. Public Speaking will boost your confidence and give you more power to speak and to be listened to in both your personal and professional life.
**What makes this public speaking session different from others you ask?**
There is a strong emphasis on self-expression, creativity, trial and error, and most importantly, speaking practice!
**What will you gain from this event?**
* Gain confidence by overcoming your fear of public speaking
* Learn to think on your feet with our Impromptu speaking format
* Get feedback and improve your public speaking with a real audience
* Tips and opportunities to practice: body language, voice, tone, pitch, uses of stories, use of pauses, humour, etc...
**Here's how it works:**
\*I may choose to change the format from time to time based on numbers, and to practice different aspects of public speaking in order to keep it challenging\*
You will put your name in a hat/bowl and when your name is chosen, you will be asked to perform.
You will speak for 2 minutes on a random topic given by the audience. This is called an impromptu speech.
We will do 2-3 rounds of speaking followed by a feedback session at the end of the workshop.
**Public Speaking suggestions:**
TIP: Give your impromptu speech the following 3 sections below.
1. Introduction ("Today, I'm going to talk about....")
2. Body ("Here is my personal experience....")
3. Conclusion ("So, my key message is ....")
Each speech is to be 2 minutes long. Audience size 10-15 people.
You're not obligated to speak, although I may strongly encourage you to do so.

A monthly healing space where we gather to tend the pieces of ourselves and weave them back into wholeness that we are. Each session opens with a Soulbits oracle image setting the tone for the gathering we will move through. We will come together to honor the natural rhythms of rooting, rising, releasing, and receiving; the cycles that shape the soul’s journey.
Through the four pillars of being: mindset, movement, connection & nourishment, we will create a space where imagery, sensation, and community weave together. Where the body becomes the guide, images act as mirrors, and the soul speaks. This circle is about noticing what rises, honoring what’s true, and reconnecting with the parts of yourself ready to be seen.
This is a space to gather your scattered pieces, soften your body, and return to your truth with community by your side. Soulbits Circle is a reminder that every fragment of your story, every soulbit, belongs. Together we weave them into the blooming wholeness that you are.

Drunken Philosophy: What’s up with all the AI hate?
**Welcome to Drunken Philosophy** a casual, curious social discussion
**Optional topic for this meetup: What's up with all the AI hate?**
A recent survey found that 74% of Americans have a negative view of AI, and I want to know why. Come out and debate whether AI is good or bad.
My hot take: a labor-saving tool that could potentially help cure cancer gets called dangerous because it might raise unemployment or cause a speculative investment bubble, that tells you a lot more about capitalism and the economic system we live under than it does about the tool itself. As a computer programmer, I think AI is a wonderful tool that has increased my productivity by at least an order of magnitude. I'd go so far as to say Claude Code is the best tool I have ever used. Debate me and name a better one.
Is AI potentially dangerous? Yes, but so are a lot of tools. Chainsaws. Steam engines (early ones would occasionally explode and kill everyone in the room). Do you think cavemen sat around debating whether fire could be used as a weapon or for self-harm, and decided not to discover it?
I have two friends who hate AI for opposite reasons: one thinks it's a fad and not useful, and the other thinks it's going to take over everything and cause human extinction.
Come out tonight, have a friendly debate, and make some friends.
No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it's fun.

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for May is "Ink"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
