Shanghai was used to be a fishing village in Tang Dynasty and then became a town in Song Dynasty. Finally, Shanghai was raised to county status in 1292 during Yuan Dynasty. The city walls were built in 1554 during the Ming Dynasty to protect the town from Japanese pirates.
