The entire route is about 5 kilometers long and aims to lead participants in reading architecture, appreciating culture, and engaging with history and meet and greet new friends on the tour.. Suzhou Creek, the biggest tributary of the Huangpu, runs through central areas of the city and stretches from the Outer Ring to the Bund. Suzhou creek waterfront has been revitalized in recent years to provide uninterrupted walking paths, new gardens and ample resting areas. Shanghai was used to be a fishing village in Tang Dynasty and then became a town in Song Dynasty. Finally, Shanghai was raised to county status in 1292 during Yuan Dynasty. The city walls were built in 1554 during the Ming Dynasty to protect the town from Japanese pirates. Now the walls were demolished in 1912 with only two parts remaining, and a broad circular avenue built over the former wall and moat: the southern half was named the "Zhonghua Road" and the northern half the "Minguo Road" (together making up "Zhonghua Minguo", or "Republic of China" in Chinese). (The northern half was renamed "Renmin Road" ("People's Road") in 1950 by the new Communist government of Shanghai).
