Nijmegen Tabletop Testing Night #84
š¬š§ **For English-speaking guests:**
Before a board game or card game can be published, it must undergo extensive testing to ensure that it is enjoyable, clear, and always functions properly. Therefore, **every 2 weeks**, we gather with game authors from the region to test prototypes of games, thereby improving them and, perhaps, getting them published someday.
At 8 PM, we gather at [StartUp Nijmegen](https://startupnijmegen.nl/) for a game testing evening. Depending on the number of attendees and prototypes brought (feel free to bring something yourself), we form several groups. For smaller games, you can switch groups throughout the evening, but for larger games, you should discuss this.
**Even if you** **do not design games** or have a game you want to test, you are, of course, very welcome. It is very beneficial for designers to receive feedback from as many people as possible. And to be honest: testing new games is just a lot of fun!
We continue until about 11 PM, but feel free to go home earlier if you wish. There is **free coffee** **and tea** at StartUp Nijmegen. StartUp Nijmegen is located opposite the station. You can park your car in the adjacent Keizer Karel parking garage (50 cents per hour). There is also a secure bicycle parking facility here.
The testing evenings in Nijmegen are every **2nd Tuesday** and **4th Wednesday** of the month. So be sure to mark those in your calendar (tip: automatically add them to your calendar with [this iCal link](https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/c_d2267afce516f9296468270649b3f44da6c06cbc0bc3de05f049992373db5f4f@group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics))! About the talks:
**Let's use Spring Boot to build games, because why not?**
**Alexander Chatzizacharias - JDriven**
If you work on enterprise grade microservices on the JVM, you have undoubtedly heard of Spring Boot. Most developers see it as the reliable backbone of enterprise software. It is stable, predictable, and safe. But what if we took all those conventions and threw them out the window? What if we repurposed the IoC container, event listeners, and bean lifecycles to reveal what Spring Boot was always meant to be? A game development framework!
Join Alexander as he attempts to deconstruct and demystify the Spring ecosystem by forcing it to do things it was definitely not designed for. We are not talking about simple text adventures here. We are talking about building complex, real-time games like a Terraria clone or a souls-like RPG, all powered by the same annotations you use for your day job.
This session explores what happens when you learn technologies by breaking them. Whether you are a Spring veteran or a newcomer, this talk offers a fresh perspective on the tools you use every day. You will leave with a better understanding of how Spring Boot works under the hood and the inspiration to build something completely unnecessary, just because you can. Come for the absurdity, stay for the laughs, and see what happens when you strip away conventions and best practices in the pursuit of a wild idea.
**Zero Trust: Applying Military Procedures to Cybersecurity Challenges**
**Laurens Blankers - JDriven**
Cybersecurity is becoming more and more challenging. A lot of ānewā solutions are being proposed, including Zero Trust. Although, if you really drill down to the core, Zero Trust proposes a way of working which has been standard in military organisations around the world for over 80 years. Join me in breaking down Zero Trust into a number of easily understood principles including a number of approaches which can be applied to your software today.
Laurens is a Java Software Engineer with over 20 years of experience. He excels at extracting the bigger picture and applying this to the smallest details. He combines this theoretical knowledge with his vast practical experience and hands-on mentality. Laurens has significant experience with a number of Java based platforms, including Jakarta EE and Spring (Boot). Ranging from REST microservices in the cloud to applications for controlling custom hardware on the desktop. In his personal life Laurens enjoys Science Fiction, board games, and history of technology.
**Practical AI Developer Setup Demo**
**Alexander Chatzizacharias - JDriven**
After the talks, Alexander will give a live demonstration of his AI-powered development setup and workflow. Discover how modern AI tools can help you write code faster, improve productivity, automate repetitive tasks, and accelerate learning. You'll get a practical look at the tools, techniques, and workflows that developers are using today to get the most out of AI.
At the end of the demo, we'll hold a giveaway where one attendee will **win a** **1-month Claude Code MAX subscription (worth ā¬100)**.

We are excited to announce that we are welcomed by TenneT for the June meetup.
Please note that TenneT **requires** all visitors to present a **valid ID** upon entry and that we must provide a list of attendees in advance. For this reason, **we need your full name** as it appears on your ID. If your Meetup username is different from your real name, we'll get in touch before the event to confirm the name on your ID.
Also note that we start 10 minutes earlier than normal, the first talk will start at 18:20
**Agenda**
* 17:00 CET walk-in
* 17:30 ā 18:20 Food and drinks
* 18:20 ā 19:10 talk: **How we develop and maintain our (12 year old) DDD app** by **Dan Haywood**
* 19:10 ā 19:30 break
* 19:30 ā 20:20 talk: **AI augmented teams: from tab complete to AI workforce** by **Radek Kowalski**
* 20:20ā 20:45 drinks
**How we develop and maintain our (12 year old) DDD app**
Weāre a small team (about 2.5 FTEs) but we develop and maintain a big app - it processes ā¬500m invoices in turnover each year, for a ā¬4bn company that owns and operates shopping centres throughout Europe. And itās a DDD app too ⦠itās our focus on the domain that allows us to do a lot with, well, not much.
In this talk weāll try to explain our way of doing things, some of which might be obvious and youāll know, some of which could be a bit more contentious or surprising. The technology may intrigue you, but the mindset is just as important.
**About Dan Haywood**
Dan Haywood is an independent consultant based in the UK, an ASF member and committer to Apache Causeway. He spends his days either cutting code or advising governments.
**AI augmented teams: from tab complete to AI workforce**
Ten months ago, when Radek and his team launched their project under a tight deadline and limited budget, it seemed nearly impossible. Fortunately, it was 2025āand agentic coding tools were ready to help.
The team embraced these tools as a lifeline, developing a workflow where engineers and AI agents built software side by side. The result: delivery ahead of schedule and within budget.
In this talk, Radek shares how the teamās approach evolved, the practical strategies they developed, and the lessons they learned to overcome constraints in time and cost.
**About Radek Kowalski**
Over a 20+ year career in IT, Radek has grown from software engineer to architect to senior leaderābefore returning to the trenches to embrace the AI revolution and shape it firsthand. In the past year, he has helped organizations and engineering teams embed AI into both their business and daily workflows.
SEA: Search Engines Amsterdam
This meetup session will focus on ACL and SIGIR 2026 and feature three speakers from University of Amsterdam: **Yibin Lei, Zahra Abbasiantaeb** and **Dylan Jia-Huei Ju**. They will present their papers accepted at ACL and SIGIR 2026.
**Location:** Science Park 904, Room C3.161
**Date**: Friday, June 26
**Time**: 16:00-17:00
**Zoom** **link**: [https://uva-live.zoom.us/j/65011610507](https://uva-live.zoom.us/j/65011610507)
Details below:
**Speaker #1:** Yibin Lei
**Title:** Making Large Language Models Efficient Dense Retrievers
**Abstract:** Recent work has shown that directly fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) for dense retrieval yields strong performance, but their substantial parameter counts make them computationally inefficient. While prior studies have revealed significant layer redundancy in LLMs for generative tasks, it remains unclear whether similar redundancy exists when these models are adapted for retrieval tasks, which require encoding entire sequences into fixed representations rather than generating tokens iteratively. To this end, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of layer redundancy in LLM-based dense retrievers. We find that, in contrast to generative settings, MLP layers are substantially more prunable, while attention layers remain critical for semantic aggregation. Building on this insight, we propose EffiR, a framework for developing efficient retrievers that performs large-scale MLP compression through a coarse-to-fine strategy (coarse-grained depth reduction followed by fine-grained width reduction), combined with retrieval-specific fine-tuning. Across diverse BEIR datasets and LLM backbones, EffiR achieves substantial reductions in model size and inference cost while preserving the performance of full-size models.
**Bio:** Yibin Lei is a PhD student at the University of Amsterdam, where he works on information retrieval in multilingual and low-resource scenarios. He has co-authored multiple papers in leading conferences like ACL, EMNLP, and ICLR. Additionally, he has served as a committee member/reviewer for SIGIR, ACL ARR, NeurIPS and ICLR.
**Speaker #2:** Zahra Abbasiantaeb
**Title:** Conversational Gold: Evaluating Personalized Conversational Search System Using Gold Nuggets
**Abstract:** As personalized conversational search systems increasingly rely on Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), assessing the quality, relevance, and factual alignment of long-form responses remains a critical challenge. Traditional evaluation metrics often fall short when judging complex, multi-turn conversational outputs. In this presentation, we introduce **CONE-RAG**, a novel nugget-based evaluation paradigm designed to bridge the gap between retrieval effectiveness and generation quality.
Moving beyond high-level surface metrics, **CONE-RAG** establishes a structured framework for long-form answer generation evaluation by centering on "gold nuggets"āconcise, atomic units of essential information extracted directly from relevant source passages. We outline how the framework operationalizes automatic response evaluation through automated nugget extraction and semantic matching, explicitly linking generation quality back to retrieval performance. Attendees will gain insights into how this paradigm enables a deeper, more granular diagnostic assessment of RAG systems, establishing a rigorous new standard for evaluating personalized, context-aware conversational search.
**Bio**: Zahra Abbasiantaeb is a Ph.D. student at the University of Amsterdam's Information Retrieval Lab (IRLab). Her research centers on improving conversational information seeking systems through advanced evaluation, query understanding, and personalized search framework design. Over the past three years, she has co-organized the TREC iKAT track, aiming to foster standard test collections and robust benchmarks for conversational systems.
**Speaker #3:** Dylan Jia-Huei Ju
**Title**: Search for Coverage: Learning Coverage-Aware Retrieval with Augmented Sub-Question Answerability
**Abstract**: Long-form RAG introduces a new challenge of coverage-based ranking, where retrieval must ensure the inclusion of comprehensive and diverse relevant nuggets (i.e., facts) that can be synthesized into a thorough output. In this talk, I will present CoveR, a retrieval method optimized for coverage-aware retrieval. CoveR is trained with coverage contrastive and distillation objectives, designed to produce query representations that capture broader aspects of an information need. To support model training, we construct SCOPE, a dataset of 90K training pairs built with synthetic coverage signals derived from sub-question answerability judgments. Our experiments demonstrate that CoveR effectively balances relevance and coverage. We hope this study can facilitate further research on coverage-based ranking and more dynamic retrieval architectures for RAG.

Free In-Person Meeting: Get Over Losses & Betrayals, Build Lasting Relationships
This is a free, in-person meeting on the subject of betrayals, losses and how to get over them so you can build lasting relationships.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to āpin the blameā on someone or something. If you donāt find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, donāt know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe youāve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
⢠How to āeraseā the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isnāt always repeating past mistakes.
⢠Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
⢠Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
⢠Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
⢠Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
⢠What underlies ācorrosive criticismā or the need to invalidate self or others?
⢠How one can stably change oneās outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
⢠Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
⢠How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
⢠How to enhance oneās own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or oneās career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are āstoredā and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can āeraseā those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become ātoxicā personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you wonāt be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!
This class is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.
