A total of 8 players again last Monday, with 1 player returning after a long hiatus (welcome back, Patrick!) and 1 new member (welcome to the club, Monash!). There's a bit of a break from face to face and online backgammon due to the Easter holiday, but we'll be back at the Trafalgar on Monday April 13th. Hope to see a bunch of you there! Please note that the bar/restaurant expects us to buy food and/or drinks as patrons of the establishment. All levels of backgammon skill are welcome, including beginners! We offer free lessons to people who are interested in learning. People with experience can play friendly matches among each other.

This is a regular Bring-Your-Own-Book session, where participants share and present to the group non-fiction books they have read. New members are welcome to attend to listen to and discuss the presentations of others. Usually a meeting takes around 2.5-3 hours. During this time we discuss 2 different books, roughly 1 hour per book. Any non-fiction material: a book, documentary, or lecture or a part of it - anything with a title and an author and that contains some coherent ideas. Each presentation includes a summary of a book (15-40 min) and discussion (accordingly). The meeting will be either in a park or in a coffee shop, on HK side. The exact place to be confirmed with the attendees **by WhatsApp only**. I will / have sent the link to the WhatsApp group, please use the link. Introvert friendly. We have people from different countries, so while books can be in any language, the language of the meeting is English. There is a fee of 20 HKD for the first timers to help funding the Meetup membership needed to run the group. Do not hit "Attend" if you are not going to attend. If you RSVPed, but there is anything preventing you from going to the meeting, remember to tell the host as soon as possible and/or update the RSVP - before the RSVP is closed, to give other people a chance to take your spot. Welcome to Write Night in HK! This is an evening writing group with an after-work drink! We'll meet at Yardley Taproom in Central (62 Peel Street), as they typically have a pretty good and chilled out vibe in the week-day evenings. We write and we share writing - please bring 6-8 printed copies of your work (max 2 pages). The evening group will run differently from the daytime group - we'll do some writing and give each other feedback on our own prior work. So, the evening will go in two parts: 1. We start with a 20 min writing exercise, based on a prompt - bring something to write or type on! Then we'll share and give feedback. 2. We go over any written material you've done before and care to share with us: 2 x full printed pages at most (maybe a bit more if spaced out, such as with poetry). Please bring around 6-8 print-outs. Remember that the place may be a bit noisy - so may be hard for people to hear you if you read your work out loud to others on the night. A note on feedback - please be prepared to offer constructive, nice and supportive feedback. No 'brutal honesty' please. Most people are just getting started, and positive support is the order of the night for this group. Then... we play to find out what happens. The game is a conversation: I say something, then you reply, maybe someone else chimes in. We talk about what's happening to the characters we imagine and the world around them. We also talk about the rules, which help us decide what happens next if the next step is in doubt. The rules differ from game to game: some use dice to shape the story, others use cards or something else. It's always a conversation, though.

[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Doom and Dinosaurs,”** a look at how mass extinctions shaped the dinosaurs and what research on these events tells us about Earth life’s long-term prospects, with Ian Wilenzik, paleontologist and visiting assistant professor of biology at George Washington University. They lacked both scientific research to help deal with potential environmental catastrophes and places where they could have a beer and discuss it. You, on the other hand, have the opportunity to come to Profs and Pints to hear a fascinating talk on the impact of mass extinctions on dinosaur evolution and what research on dinosaurs tells us about biodiversity and Earth’s current biodiversity crisis. Dr. Ian Wilenzik, who has studied and taught courses on dinosaur evolution, population spread, and extinction, will leave you with a greater appreciation of the resilience of life on earth and how we’re both the product and source of biologically catastrophic events. Many of us are familiar with how a big meteor impact about 66 million years ago wiped out the Earth’s dinosaur population, leaving us only with their feathered descendants, birds. Less well known is how the Earth actually has undergone five periods of mass extinction that wiped out nearly all life, and how dinosaurs arose from one and endured another—both caused by volcanic activity—before meeting their match in the third. To ground his discussion, Dr. Wilenzik will talk about how we study mass extinctions by looking for geologic evidence of volcanic activity, meteoric blasts, and other catastrophic activity and of gaps in the fossil record after them. He’ll also discuss what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur, describing their distinct anatomical features. He’ll talk about how they and other forms of life evolved over long periods of time and were affected by extinction events. We’ll look at how the meteor-caused mass extinction that wiped out dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous paved the way for the rise of mammals and the emergence of primates, and, eventually, us. Looking ahead to future mass extinctions and what might survive them, we’ll talk about how that plant you forget to water might have the last laugh, as well as why crocodiles might be around a while.
