I love seeing all of the Oscar Nominated Shorts especially the Animated ones. Unfortunately this year I wasn’t able to organize a series this year but don’t want to miss seeing them on the big screen! Let’s meet 15 mins before at 6:30 pm. The screening is at 6:45pm. This production earns high Oddball marks for both style and content. Structured as if it’s a series of short films, each with its own title, it nonetheless tells the bizarre but coherent story of a scientist who invents a device that can “sterilize” or “cancel” atomic bombs. Apparently this means it renders them inert, although the specifics are never revealed. Daniel Emilfork, who was born to play mad scientists (he was Dr. Krank in The City of Lost Children), is the inventor, and after announcing his achievement, he retreats to his fortified villa and disdains any further contact with the outside world. But there was a price—the partition of their country, a split setting the stage for the Northern Ireland “Troubles” that didn’t end until 1998. Gain a deeper understanding of Ireland and its history with Professor Kevin Matthews, a historian who served as a journalist covering the last stages of the Troubles in Ireland in the early and mid 1990s. He’ll discuss in depth how the Irish won independence in a two-year war between 1919 and 1921, covering topics as the role women played in the conflict, the life and tactics of the revolutionary leader Michael Collins, and the Irish development of “urban guerilla warfare” using small, highly mobile armed units called “flying columns.” Most important, this talk will examine how the conflict between Irish nationalists and Irish unionists led to Ireland’s division and later conflict. From the Easter Rising to the Good Friday Agreement, from Bloody Sunday to Brexit, this conflict has never quite gone away. As the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats once wrote: Now and in time to be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. Professor Matthews will explore how the Irish fought to a standstill what was then the mightiest empire in the world and how, more than he could have known, Yeats’ prediction still rings true today. We've never read Eudora Welty here, so we're going to discuss her best-known work, the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Optimist's Daughter." This short novel, which began as a story in the New Yorker, is about a woman who travels to New Orleans to take care of her father after surgery. I've been meaning to read Welty for years, so I'm happy we're doing this now.

Following the events of the first movie, Grace MacCaullay (Samara Weaving), having survived the Le Domas Family's deadly game of hide and seek, is now pitted against the richest and powerful families in the world in another deadly game of cat and mouse, while protecting her younger sister Faith (Kathryn Newton), who is also marked for death. Let's see Project Hail Mary, the new scifi Ryan Gosling. I heard the trailer majorly spoils the book which I'm frantically trying to finish it off before the movie in a week. Same directors as the Jonah Hill/Channing Tatum 21/22 Jump Street movies, so it could be fun. I'll be in seat H8. We'll get food afterwards.

**🚀 In a world full of uncertainties, sometimes a leap of faith is the only move left.** **👋 Hey guys!** Let’s diving into this curious sci-fi tale produced and directed by **Phil Lord** and **Christopher Miller**. Socializing with vegan food beforehand and discussion about the movie afterwards is planned. THIS MONTH'S MOVIE WATCH PARTY WILL BEGIN AT 3 PM. This month's movie is Wicked: For Good (Part 2). *Wicked: For Good* explores the untold story behind the witches of Oz, following two unlikely friends whose choices, values, and courage shape the world around them. It’s a powerful, visually stunning story about identity, loyalty, and what it truly means to be “good.” The movie is 2 hours and 17 minutes long. The VSDC member hosts’ home in Fairfax has a small home theater that can accommodate around 20 people. This regular event is a fun way to learn, discuss, and meet vegans and vegan-curious people (Thanks to Mindy Kursban and David Kwiatkowski for hosting!). FEE: The $12 fee will cover the hosts' expenses for the event, including food, beverages, and other associated costs. If there are any proceeds beyond these costs, which we don't expect, they will go towards VSDC's work to fulfill its mission.
