VSDC LGBTQ+ Film & Fun
VSDC LGBTQ+ Film & Fun
Summer is outdoor film season in DC, so let's take advantage of a free flick while having some fun near the water hanging with fellow LGBTQ+ vegan or veg-curious folks. The Wharf's [Sunset Cinema ](https://www.wharfdc.com/sunsetcinema/)will be showing the 2007 film *Hairspray*, which was directed/choreographed by Adam Shankman, who identifies as LGBTQ+. It also features John Travolta in drag. While it's a fun musical, the spirit of the film is centered around acceptance of all people, and that's definitely something we need more of in our country! Folding chairs and blankets are allowed (and encouraged, as other seating is very limited). In the event of rain, the Wharf may cancel the showing. In that instance this event will be also cancelled and the host will post an important comment to alert people that it won't proceed. **When:** Wed. June 10 at 7pm, to provide some time to chat (film starts at 7:30). **Location:** The film will be shown at the Wharf's Transit Pier ([970 Wharf Street SW](https://maps.app.goo.gl/RsMaFth9br8LDN8FA)). The event host will get there early and try to hold as much space as possible and will update the group with a comment regarding her specific location so it will be easier to find her. **Transportation:** The Wharf is near both the [Waterfront ](https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/waterfront.cfm)and [L'Enfant Plaza](https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/lenfant-plaza.cfm) metro stops. (See the [Wharf website ](https://www.wharfdc.com/getting-here/)for more details on getting to the venue.) **Cost:** Free ***About the Group*** *Unless noted otherwise, VSDC's LGBTQ+ events are intended for queer/questioning folks who self-identify as LGBTQ+. The events are meant to serve as a safe space to share community with other self-identified queer or questioning LGBTQ+ vegan or vegan-curious people. However, we appreciate our allies and we plan to host "LGBTQ+ & ALLIES" events approximately quarterly - to welcome non-queer allies into our events in order to share community with our fellow vegans/veg curious VSDC participants. If the event is an "& ALLIES" event, it will be clearly identified as such in the name of the event. Any person who participates in an "& ALLIES" event must be supportive of LGBTQ+ persons, their lifestyle, and their gender expression; unsupportive or combative individuals will be removed from events and banned from future VSDC LGBTQ+ events. Please note that any and all questions related to gender/LGBTQ+ issues that may arise during either LGBTQ+ or LGBTQ+ & ALLIES events must be posed ONLY to event host, Susan, and not be asked of any other meetup participants in order to respect their privacy and promote their personal safety.* **Update Your RSVP** Please change your RSVP if you can no longer make it. **VSDC: More Than A Meetup** We are delighted to have you as part of The Veg Society of DC Vegan Meetup group, and we look forward to seeing you at our events. Join us for a special showcase of the Max Fleischer '*Superman' cartoons on the big screen!* The 1941-42 Fleischer Studios shorts were Superman's first animated theatrical adventures that not only created a definitive style but went on to influence animated portrayals of other comic book characters such as Batman: The Animated Series. Long revered as among the best of the superhero cartoons, these films are presented in newly restored 4K resolution from 35MM archival prints spearheaded by Max's granddaughter, Jane Fleischer Reid.

AFI Silver: BLACK GIRL (1966) with BOROM SARRET by Ousemane Sembene
AFI Silver: BLACK GIRL (1966) with BOROM SARRET by Ousemane Sembene
Link to purchase tickets: [https://silver.afi.com/movies/detail/0100000551/](https://silver.afi.com/movies/detail/0100000551/) This meetup at AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring is a double feature of Black Girl and Borom Sarat. The ticket incudes both films. Ousmane Sembène, one of the greatest and most groundbreaking filmmakers ever and the most internationally renowned African director of the 20th century, made his feature debut in 1966 with the brilliant and stirring BLACK GIRL. Sembène, who was also an acclaimed novelist in his native Senegal, transforms a deceptively simple plot — about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white couple and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a figurative and literal prison — into a complex, layered critique on the lingering colonialist mindset of a supposedly postcolonial world. Featuring a moving central performance by Mbissine Thérèse Diop, BLACK GIRL is a harrowing human drama as well as a radical political statement — and one of the essential films of the 1960s. (Note courtesy of Janus Films.) DIR/SCR Ousmane Sembène, from his short story; PROD André Zwoboda. Senegal/France, 1966, b&w, 60 min. In French with English subtitles. NOT RATED Preceded by: BOROM SARRET The genesis of Black African cinema can be traced to this short, stark masterpiece that chronicles a day in the life of a Dakar cart driver. DIR/SCR/PROD Ousmane Sembène. Senegal, 1963, b&w, 20 min. In French and Wolof with English subtitles. NOT RATED BOROM SARRET was restored in 2013 by the Cineteca di Bologna/L'Immagine Ritrovata laboratory and Éclair, in association with The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project; INA, Institut National de l’Audiovisuel; and the Sembène Estate. Restoration funded by Doha Film Institute. Run Time: 80 Minutes Genre: Drama
