Google AI: Gemma NPCs + The Browser is the Brain: Running Google Gemma Locally
Google AI: Gemma NPCs + The Browser is the Brain: Running Google Gemma Locally
In this session of HKWD we dive into the world of local models with Google AI. The evening will be held at Garage society with their support along with AngelFlow. The night is split into two parts. One on video game development of Non Player Characters and using GenAI and the other will be The Browser is the Brain: Running Google Gemma Locally with WebGPU. **Talk 1: Video game development of Non Player Characters and using GenAI** Using AI in video games is not a new idea and has been used a long time for things like game mechanics, character movements, path finding, dynamic levels and maps. However using it for non playable charters is new and Google Gemma is designed exactly for that. We take a look at how to get up and running with Gemma in Unity and some of the alternatives. **Gemma** Google has a great library designed just for Non Player Characters and we will explore how to use it in Unity. https://ai.google.dev/gdc **About Rhys Turner** Co founder, Creative Technologist and Director, Tronica Rhys Turner is a Creative Technologist and Innovation Technologist, specialising in the intersection of technology, design, and luxury experiences. With a background in emerging technologies, AI, and interactive media, he explores innovative ways to enhance digital storytelling and customer engagement. His work focuses on blending creativity with technical innovation, pushing the boundaries of digital craftsmanship in the fashion and beauty industries. **Talk 2: The Browser is the Brain: Running Google Gemma Locally with WebGPU** While many associate AI with heavy cloud costs and latency, Google’s Gemma is small and efficient enough to run directly in the user's browser. In this session, Frankie (GDG Hong Kong) explores the frontier of "Local AI" for the web. We will discuss how developers can use Google’s tools to run Gemma models on-device via WebGPU. This approach eliminates API costs and privacy concerns, allowing web developers to create highly responsive, AI-powered interfaces that feel as fluid as a modern video game—all without a backend. **About Frankie Wu** Organiser, GDG Hong Kong As an Al Engineer, Frankie’s role revolves around leveraging Large Language Models and data mining to innovate news analytics. His recent academic journey culminated with a Master's in Computer Science from The University of Hong Kong, focusing on financial computing which complements his current work. Frankie’s expertise in Python and passion for machine learning empower him to contribute to large enterprise digital transformation. The fusion of risk management principles from his bachelor's degree and psychological insights helps him craft Al solutions that are not only technically sound but also contextually aware, enhancing the strategic decision-making process. **Sponsors and supporting partner** [Tronica](https://tronica.io/) - HKWD sponsor [Angelflow](https://www.angelflow.vc/) - supporting partner [Garage Society](https://www.thegaragesociety.com/) - supporting partner **Event notes** * This event is first come first serve and will be letting people in on a capacity basis * food and drinks buy by the bar * vip reserved seats upon request

Hong Kong Plant Walk #1: Quarry Bay
Hong Kong Plant Walk #1: Quarry Bay
***About this outing***: I invite you to join the first Hong Kong Plant Walk! We will be doing an easy hike with the aim of getting more familiar with Hong Kong’s native plants by using the Inaturalist app. We will begin with a quick explainer about Inaturalist and then wander at a comfortable pace along small trails near Quarry Bay pausing to look more closely at plants and record our observations. There is a short uphill climb on the route, so moderate hiking fitness and comfortable walking/hiking shoes are needed. ***About the organizer:*** I am a regular hiker, plant lover and Inaturalist ambassador. However, I am not a botanist or expert! The aim of this walk is to discover plants together, document Hong Kong’s native biodiversity and work on removing our plant blindness. ***Please***: ✔Have a true profile photo of yourself, so that I can recognize you ✔Download the Inaturalist app on your phone before the walk ✔Have breakfast and hydrate before the hike ✔Show up on time (I won’t wait!) ***Do bring***: ✔Water or sports drink ✔Comfortable walking/hiking shoes ✔Mosquito repellent ✔Sun protection (hat / sunscreen / long sleeves) ✔Umbrella ***Don't***: ❌Wear inappropriate clothes/shoes (flip flops, heels) ❌Be late ❌Bring guests (all participants must sign up separately) ❌Smoke or drop litter on the trail ***Walk details***: Approx. 4 km with 150m climb. I plan to finish within 2.5 hours. The walk will end at Mount Parker Road with easy access to public transport. ***Meeting time and place***: 10am at Taikoo MTR exit B at street level, just inside the exit. I will start promptly! ***Route description***: Quarry Bay Tree Walk and connecting trails ***Important notes***: * I will make a list of participants with visible profile photos on Meetup. If you cannot make it, please update your RSVP on Meetup as soon as possible. * I will not wait for latecomers and will not check messages after the walk begins! * The walk may be cancelled in the event of heavy rain or for other reasons. Please check this page 2 hours before the event time for any updates. * There is a public toilet near the start of the walk. * Participants join this walk at their own choosing and at their own risk.

Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations. If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!). **HOW IT WORKS** **Step 1: Bring a topic** Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event. **Step 2: Circle up & share** We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds. **Step 3: Walk, talk & float** We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!" **Step 4: Feel more alive** Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times. *For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)* **HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC** A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about. Recent topics include: * "What are you passionate about right now?" * "What makes a good friend?" * "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?" * "How do you want to be remembered?" * "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?" Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter. **WHAT TO EXPECT** This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.* But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here. **FAQ** * Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk! * We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space. * We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space. * Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know. * Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic! **LOGISTICS** * If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event. * This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs. * Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details. * If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋 **IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...** [The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up. * This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. If the walks feel like a spark... The Board is the fire. Apply [here](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board).
