February Greek Language MeetUp
February Greek Language MeetUp
Γειά σας! I hope folks are doing well despite this non-Hellenic weather! Hopefully, the snow will be gone before our next Greek Language MeetUp on Thursday, February 26th, at 7 pm. It's still the Free State's turn, so we'll MeetUp at Mykonos Grill in Rockville. Though we will follow our usual format of chatting with our παρεα, I will bring a question to discuss as a theme for this MeetUp, There are a few more Hellenic events to flag, including: * The snow caused our friends at the Hellenic Society Prometheas to reschedule their inaugural Cultural Heritage Awards Gala to Saturday, February 14th, at 6 pm, at the Falls Church Marriott Fairview Park at 3111 Fairview Park Drive. The gala will honor three notable members of our community, Dr. Nicholas Patronas, Mrs. Sophia Tsangali, and Father Steven Zorzos, "who have championed the spirit of Hellenism and its historical and cultural richness" with music provided by pianist Dr. Mary-Victoria Voutsas, the Palko Greek Music Band with singer Sophia Pelekasis, as well as DJTheo. Tickets are still available for $150 and can be purchased at [DC Greeks](https://www.dcgreeks.com/event_display.asp?EventID=2026012401). * The annual Celebration of *World Greek Language Day* will be held on Sunday, Feb. 15th at 3:00 pm at Saint George in Bethesda. The main speaker is Mr. Dimitri Dandolos, a founding board member of the Odyssey School in Wilmington, Delaware. * Saint Sophia will hold its Mardi Gras Community Dance, or Apocreatiko/Αποκριάτικο, on Saturday, February 21st, from 6 pm to 10 pm. It will feature a buffet dinner and music from Palko. Tickets are $85 each. Let me know if we should get a MeetUp table! * Speaking of which, let me know if we should try to get tickets to see Greek-American humorist and author David Sedaris on Sunday, April 19th, at 3 pm, at DAR Constitution Hall. Tickets are between $50 and $75. A pretty nice list of events, highlighted of course by our MeetUp on February 26th at Mykonos Grill. Να τα πούμε! - Athan
Come Play Flotilla OR Manhattan Project: Energy Empire
Come Play Flotilla OR Manhattan Project: Energy Empire
We vote every week on what to play, and this week we had a very rare tie for the winner. To be fair to these games, because they have feelings, we're going to play both. We'll bring both games on Thursday and we'll separate into two groups, one group playing each game. Then two weeks from now we'll come back and do an ol' switcheroo and play the other games we didn't get to play the first week. Flotilla BGG Description: **Flotilla** features two distinct and interwoven modes of gameplay, as you try to outpace your opponents in bringing prosperity to humanity’s new home. You begin the game as a **“Sinkside”** Fleet Commander, commissioned by world leaders to explore the new face of the ocean, scour the depths for resources, and rescue any survivors you come across. At any point in the game, you may choose to turn **“Skyside,”** by selling your skiffs, and leaving your seafaring life behind to now grow the Flotilla itself. Manhattan Project: Energy Empire Description: From the ashes of war, nations rise to power in the atomic age! In ***Manhattan Project: Energy Empire***, each player takes control of a nation struggling for power in the latter part of the 20th century. They build up their nation’s industry, commerce, and government by acquiring resources, building structures, and tapping sources of energy. The major threat in *Energy Empire* is not war, but uncertain global impacts, that result from side effects of industrialization and pollution. Many actions come with a cost. So, as nations become more industrious, they also increase the amount of pollution in the environment. Careful use of science can mitigate the harmful effects of industry, and can also help avert global crises. *Energy Empire* uses worker placement, tableau-building, and resource management mechanics. On each turn, a player can choose to either work or generate. On a work turn, a player plays a single worker on the main board, then uses workers and energy to activate cards in their tableau. Players may spend energy to use an occupied space on the main board, so no spaces are ever completely blocked. On a generate turn, players get to renew their supply of energy by rolling "energy dice" that represent nuclear, coal, oil, solar, and other forms of energy.

Beginners' No Drop Ride
Beginners' No Drop Ride
Meet in the parking lot of the Handy Bikes Service Center. At the start of each ride, we'll go over introductions to have a sense of participants' cycling experience. Over the course of our rides, we'll address the following: group riding dynamics; safety (ABC check & trail hazards); gear shifting; hill climbing; audible and hand communication within the group, with other trail users, and automobile drivers; what to bring on each ride; etc... Bring your questions, water & a snack. When it starts getting dark earlier, we'll need lights as well. Helmets a MUST. If you can, and especially if you've had issues with your bike, come a bit early to have it looked at ahead of the ride. PS - all levels are welcome to join, however, be mindful that if you are an experienced rider, please be prepared to ride at the pace of the newest rider in the group. Each week, depending on who's in attendance, and participants' riding ability/comfort level, we may do skills practice as a group in the parking lot or at the west end of Wheeler Ave. Once everyone is comfortable, we'll go for a ride on local trails and neighborhood streets and finish back at the shop. Happy Pedaling !! \~Maya

Emperor Napoleon V rules France, and for the last 70 years scientists have been mysteriously disappearing, depriving mankind of their inventions. Without radio, television, electricity, aviation, and the internal combustion engine, the world is mired in outdated technology powered by coal and steam. Photograph One A Day (31 Day March Project)
Photograph One A Day (31 Day March Project)
**The rules are simple:** Take photographs **Each and Every Day** and post your best **ONE** (1) shot of the day - **EACH DAY** for **March**. If you happen to miss a day or two (life happens), it is **OK** to catch up and upload the photos for the days missed or just skip those days. **Please don't post over 2 to 3 at a time**. This is part of the learning process. **DO NOT POST TO THE ALBUM *UNTIL* AFTER 03/01/2026**. Please use a browser like Chrome and the Meetup.com website to post the images, as **the Meetup app does not handle albums very well**. Towards the top-left of the page is a link to **Add Photos** for uploading your photo to the album. **CONFIRM** **that your photo was Added to the correct Album.** Remember to post your **best photo (JUST ONE)** you took every day on that day! **DO NOT POST PHOTOS FROM ANY OTHER TIME!** If you have time to post an older image, you can take a new image and post it. Be creative. Please **add a caption** to know how far you are in the process. After you upload the image you took that day, find your photo at the end of the album, and edit the caption to state the day and total of days in the month like this:?/31. You can add the title of the image if you wish. A good title can make a photo! So, your photo for the **March 1st** caption would be "**1/31: My great photo!**" \*\* Adding a caption helps you keep track of where you are in the month. It does help. The purpose is to have fun and get in the habit of shooting every day. Learn to use your camera. Read your manual and test out a new feature you have never used before. Sometimes picking a theme/project can help focus (pun intended), like flowers, your pet(s), a lens you haven't used in a while, or whatever your passion is. Or try something new... The **end date is 03/31/2026**. Meetup.com does not allow events to be longer than 2 weeks. Other images that were not taken by you will be removed. Please keep the images family-friendly. You need to be a member of the Virginia Beltway Photography Group. I look forward to seeing how far people go and grow as better photographers!
