A: The group naturally separates into a faster pack and a more relaxed pack. The front group runs at approximately 6:30 min/km, while the rear group is flexible, running at about 7:30 min/km or at a pace comfortable for everyone in it. The rear group will always ensure no one is left behind. Q: Is this run suitable for beginners to trail running? A: Yes, newcomers to trails are welcome, as long as you are confident you can run the full advertised distance without needing to stop to walk. Please be aware that trail running has a higher risk of trips and falls, so we encourage you to run carefully. Q: What kind of terrain can I expect? A: Our trail runs feature mixed terrain, which can include soil, grass, rocks, tree roots, and mud (especially during the rainy season). Q: Are trail running shoes required? A: Trail running shoes are highly recommended for better grip and stability on uneven surfaces. Q: What should I bring with me? A: Please wear comfortable running attire suitable for Singapore's humid climate. We also recommend bringing a payment method (for our optional group breakfast) and your phone. Q: Is there a bag drop? A: No, there is no bag drop service. These are point-to-point runs (we run from A to B and do not return to the start), so please only bring what you are comfortable running with. Q: How much water and nutrition should I bring? A: Please refer to the specific event description for information on water points for that route. We advise bringing as much water and nutrition as you personally feel you will need for the distance. Q: What happens if it rains? A: This is a rain-or-shine event. In the case of heavy rain, we may delay the start by up to 10 minutes to see if the weather improves. Please be extra cautious as trails can become very slippery when wet. Q: Are there toilets available? A: We always start near an MRT station, which will have toilets. The availability of toilets along the route varies; this information will be shared during the pre-run briefing. Q: Is breakfast a group activity? A: Yes, all runners are welcome to join for breakfast at a nearby eatery after the run. It's a great way to refuel and socialise, but it's completely optional. Q: How do we get back from the end point? A: We always plan our routes to end near an MRT station or a major bus interchange, ensuring you have a convenient way to get home.
Saturday AM 5km timed run at Bishan Park
Saturday AM 5km timed run at Bishan Park
It's test day – race against yourself! Join us to test your fitness with a go-as-fast-as-you-can 5km running challenge. For our 5km challenges, we gather at one of Singapore's 5 parkruns to run with a wider group in the supportive, highly organised parkrun community. **MEETING POINT** 7:10 at Bishan MRT (exit B) for a slow jog over to the start line OR 7:20 at the start line itself (https://maps.app.goo.gl/2gzrrbom1AR54DG46) **WHAT IS PARKRUN?** Parkrun is a free, community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. Parkrun is 5k and takes place every Saturday morning. Parkrun is positive, welcoming and inclusive, there is no time limit and no one finishes last. Everyone is welcome to come along. — https://www.parkrun.sg/ **ADDITIONAL JOINING REQUIREMENTS** To join any parkrun event, you will need to first register at parkrun.sg. Once registered, you will receive a barcode. Print or save this and bring it with you on the day. **PLEASE NOTE** Urban Jungle Runners is not affiliated with parkrun in any way. Please arrive early and pay attention to the safety briefing delivered by the parkrun team. **THE BASICS** ‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾ ROUTE: Bishan Park parkun MEETING POINT: Bishan MRT ex.B (7:10)/ Bishan Park parkrun (7:20) DISTANCE: 5 km **SCHEDULE (Saturday AM)** ‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾ 0730: Meet 0735: Stretch/ Warm-up 0745: Briefing + Start run LATER: Breakfast If you are running late, please get in touch with us before 0730. Your host will share the route with you. You can open this map in your phone's web browser and try to catch up with us. We hope for your understanding that we may not be able to answer messages received after 0730. **Q: Do I need to register?** A: Yes. To get the most out of your parkrun experience, you should register at parkrun.sg/register. To get an official time, you only need to register once (for free) at parkrun.sg. Once registered, bring your personal barcode on the day (a printout or a screenshot on your phone is fine). Registration unlocks your personal parkrunner's profile, which shows your 5km times for all of the parkruns you will ever run. You'll kick yourself after your second parkrun if you don't! **Q: Why join Urban Jungle Runners for parkrun?** A: You are welcome to attend parkrun on your own, and if you find you love the 5k format, you can absolutely make it your regular Saturday run! Our group uses our monthly parkrun visit as a fun, organized way to track our 5km progress together. Joining us is a great way to meet our community. If you're looking for more variety, we also offer trail runs, hill sessions, and social road runs on the other weekends of the month. **Q: Is this a race?** A: It's a race against yourself. Parkrun is a wonderfully inclusive and non-competitive event. The goal is to challenge your own personal best in a positive environment. There's no pressure to compete with others. **Q: Is this event suitable for beginners?** A: Absolutely. Parkrun is designed for everyone, from first-time joggers and walkers to experienced runners. There is no time limit, and because it's a community event, you'll find people of all paces. It's the perfect place to start. **Q: If I meet you at the MRT, what is the pace to the start line?** A: We will jog from the designated MRT station to the start line at a very relaxed warm-up pace, approximately 6:00-6:30 min/km. **Q: What happens after the run?** A: We usually join the other parkrunners for a well-deserved breakfast at a nearby spot. It's a great social part of the morning, but it's completely optional. **Q: Who is in charge during the event?** A: The parkrun volunteer team is in charge. Our group participates as guests, so all runners must listen to the official pre-run briefing and follow the instructions of the parkrun race director and marshals at all times. **Q: Is there a bag drop?** A: Yes, parkrun locations have a designated area for bags. Please note that this area is unattended, so you should not leave valuables. **Q: What happens if it rains?** A: The event proceeds rain or shine, so please dress for the weather.

RUMBLE (JUNE SERIES)
RUMBLE (JUNE SERIES)
Hi all I am a full-time freelance PT and this year, for Rumble, I aim to help you climb stronger, descend safer, and move more confidently on hikes. We’ll keep our 4 core stations — feet and calves, engine, climbing strength, and downhill control — so you can actually feel progress over the weeks, not just get through a workout! **Meeting Place:** as seen in the image (Right next to Old Hill Street Police Station; opposite Funan) Accessible via different MRT lines and bus stops 3 min walk from Clarke Quay Stn Exit E **Duration:** 1.5h **Level:** Intermediate (and for those serious about training for AU trips) **What to expect:** 1. Warm-up & dynamic stretching 2. Stamina, Stability and Single Leg strengthening exercises with Stairs/Steps :) 3. Jogging/briskwalking between stations **Items to bring/wear** * comfortable sports attire and appropriate shoes * (Arm-length) Towel and water bottle * Most of us will be carrying our bags as part of hike training (you can choose to leave them in your car if you’re driving or bring a small bag) Make sure you are able to run with your bag! (e.g. BACKPACK do not bring a sling bag) **Note:** * In the event of wet weather, the event will be cancelled. However, if it is just a light drizzle, we may still proceed with caution or head to AU office for Signature Indoor Workout. * If you will be late or unable to make it, please inform me in advance (WA +6597318648) or update your RSVP by 8 p.m. the night before so that I can inform the next person on the waitlist. * We’re capping this at **20 pax per session** so it stays focused and manageable. * Priority will go to 2026 AU trip participants and Elite AU club members. If there are slots left, it will be given to members of the publi.c If you’re on the waitlist, it may not move strictly in order as trip participants are prioritised. We will start on time so come at least 5 minutes earlier! If you’ve done Rumble before, you already know what this is about. If you haven’t — come try once. You’ll either love it or hate me slightly. Both are acceptable. Join us for more adventures at: https://bit.ly/3Rv6XrT

Feel Good Friday: POWER BALLAD at the Gateway Film Center + SHAKE NO. 8!
Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving." The film continues John Carney’s “long run of success with yet another charmer” and “a sharp, hopeful crowd-pleaser that strikes the right notes!” SUMMER OF ICE CREAM, VOL 2: SHAKE NO. 8! Ranked the #1 Ice Cream Shop in Columbus, this is a perfect early stop on our Summer of Ice Cream! Their menu uses made-from-scratch recipes in an array of traditional, specialty and vegan shakes, hot cocoa, crepes, waffle sticks, specialty coffee & espresso, and more! Their specialty shakes are as delicious as they are over-the-top and they offer an extensive vegan menu! You can check out their full menu here: [https://www.shakeno8.com/menu.php](https://www.shakeno8.com/menu.php) PLAN: Please purchase your ticket for the 6:45pm showing and we’ll meet in the upstairs lobby between 6:25 and 6:35pm! Advance ticket purchase is advised for this opening night showing! Once you have yours, please list your seat number in the Comments section of this event. We'll head to nearby Shake No. 8 immediately following the show! Should be a fun one, Dan
Drunken Philosophy: Are you really who you think you are? What is the "self"?
Drunken Philosophy: Are you really who you think you are? What is the "self"?
I have been studying the question of "self" online with Prof. Ellie Anderson and so I thought a prompt on the "self" might be interesting. Full confession: I had Claude create this prompt and I like it, so here goes: Imagine a thought experiment that merges two classic puzzles: > You undergo a procedure, performed neuron by neuron, in which every biological component of your brain is replaced with a functionally identical synthetic substitute. At each step, your behavior, memories, and personality remain unchanged. When the last neuron is swapped, is the consciousness experiencing the world still you? And — more pressingly — was there ever a continuous "you" to begin with? ### Questions to Wrestle With * If consciousness is purely physical, does the *gradual* nature of the replacement matter, or is it equivalent to being destroyed and rebuilt? * Could there be a "self" without continuity of experience — even moment to moment, while you sleep? On a more practical level, consider the simpler case first: **hemispherectomy** patients — people who have had an entire cerebral hemisphere surgically removed — often retain a strong sense of personal identity and continuity. This suggests "you" are not rigidly tied to specific physical material. But does that vindicate the synthetic neuron case, or merely show that identity is more *flexible* than we thought — not that it can survive *complete* substrate replacement? I used Claude so I could get this out today and let everyone have some time to consider it. Hope to see you at the Oracle. Sorry about the location change two weeks ago. That's what I get for trusting local weather predictions!
