Anacostia River Trail: Bladensburg Waterfront to The Wharf and Back
**\*\*Check back to see if the date or start time has changed. This ride will be postponed (possibly replaced with another ride) if the chance of rain is above 49%, or wind speed or wind gusts are above 15 mph (per Accuweather) \*\***

**PARKING AND MEETUP SPOT**
There is a plenty of parking. Park anywhere, then bike toward the visitor center and caboose. Meet us between the train caboose and bike racks. After check-in, weâll do an icebreaker question.
**BIKE ROUTE SUMMARY**
This route is hairpin shaped because weâll return back on the north side of the river for a couple miles before taking a bridge back to the other side.
The trail will wind behind the visitor center and go along the river towards DC.
(If anyone wants to take a side trail to see the Kenilworth Gardens, let us know so we can show you the entry point). We hug the river at the beginning and pass it again at the last 3 miles down. We pass by Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, go through fields, parks, a train track overpass bridge, and the Anacostia River Park - where we may start to see boats and yachts on the river. We'll take a couple of stops to regroup on the way.
At the end of the Anacostia River Park, weâll go leftwards towards the new Frederick Douglass Bridge which may tempt you to take some photos. After crossing, weâll pass through the Audi Arena and turn left to take a break at the Titanic Memorial at the waterfront. Weâll then go to the Wharf which will require dismounting our bikes once we get to the busier areas.
**RETURN**
Weâll head up on the west side. Go slowly through The Yards district and enjoy the landscape, sculpture art, river views etc.
Right after the Navy Yards district boardwalk â-**be aware of the large pavers in front of the Navy Yard** (after crossing the narrow inlet bridge) â many pavers have wide, deep gaps in between them so bike tires can get stuck while riding, causing a flip or fall.
Halfway up, weâll take Benning Rd bridge across to the east side, then turn right and right again to get back to Bladensburg Waterfront Park.
**TYPE OF BIKE:** Any kind of bike frame and tires. Ensure it is the correct frame size for your height so you can get maximum output. Participants are responsible for ensuring their bike tires, brakes, and chain are in good condition and they have a spare tire on hand. Organizers can try to help but aren't responsible for everyone's bike conditions.
**SKILL LEVEL:** All levels can enjoy this trail. It only has about three short inclines.
**PACE:** Itâs up to you. HOWEVER: The event organizers have fit legs (avg. 10-18 mph). And some of us like to do a cardio workout at some point. We make stops at tricky points on the trail and /or to regroup every 2-4 miles. Since paved trails can sometimes be crowded, we donât have expectations of being able to go very fast.
¡ If you prefer a **faster pace** than the lead riders, you can make stops to wait for them to catch up.
¡ If youâre **not sure what your avg. speed** is, be prepared to use a nav app to ride solo in case you donât catch up to us at our stops.
**DISTANCE OPTIONS**
Participants can choose to return at any point. These are just suggestions.
**OPTION A:** Bike about three miles to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, then return
**OPTION B:** Bike about 8 miles to the Anacostia Park, then return.
**OPTION C:** Bike \~ 9.6 miles to The Wharf, DC and back. The event organizers plan to do this route.
OPTIONAL ONE HOUR BREAK: Weâll take a break to explore the Wharf boardwalk piers, shops, fountain areas, and to eat/drink, rest, and socialize. (Organizers will eat at Falafel Inc. They have a $6 falafel salad bowl. All are welcome to join us or go their own way for the break.) **Meet at 1:00 at [location to TBD] to head back.**
**OPTION D:** Bike option C then add more mileage by biking the NW Branch Trail , and then connecting to one of the other local trails.
**BATHROOMS**
Bathrooms available at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Anacostia Park, and at The Wharf Boardwalk area, as well as the Navy Yard area where weâll be stopping to enjoy river views.
**BIKE RENTALS**
Rentals are available at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park visitor center. You can reserve online before the date.
**BIKE REPAIR**
Bike repair options are at the visitor center and at The Wharf boardwalk in DC
**RECOMMENDATIONS**
**Bring:** Water bottles, snacks, biking gloves, bike bell, bike lock, helmet visor, sunglasses, bike tube, pump, patch, first aid kit, mobile phone with nav app installed (e.g. Google maps, we use RidewithGPS). If you get leg cramps during or after a ride, take electrolytes before and during your ride (or add salt and magnesium to your water). A change of clothes for your ride home or a car seat cover to absorb sweat.
Clothing: Wear biking gloves and durable clothing so that if you do fall, your skin is protected. Avoid wearing all black, all grey, all dark brown, or all dark blue, which blends in with pavement, especially while riding through a shady segment. Consider wearing something lighter to help others notice you.
**REQUIREMENTS**
**Participants must wear tightly secured helmets when on their bike.**
**Be proactive to avoid a fall/crash and minimize injury:**
¡ Keep a distance between yourself and other bikers. If the biker ahead of you suddenly stops, you should be able to avoid hitting them.
¡ Donât make stops on the trail. Pull over to the side and use hand gestures to let people know youâre slowing down to make a stop.
¡ Yelling out âPassing on your leftâ and/or ringing a bike bell as you approach people ahead of you, so they donât inadvertently move in your line of travel.
¡ Slowing down to wait, rather than speeding up when trying to pass people at the same time walkers/bikers are approaching you from the opposite direction.
¡ Avoid potholes and debris and slow down when approaching bumps
¡ When approaching road crossings and iffy situations, triple-check before crossing and donât let yourself be distracted by talking, etc.
¡ Ensure your helmet is tightly secured so that it wonât move if you hit the ground.

Most people misunderstand plastic surgery as vain and aesthetic, but the origins of this fascinating specialty are much deeper than that.
Come gain a rich understanding of the roots, medical impact, and current wide reach of a life-altering medical specialty with Dr. Wendy Chen, a leading educator on plastic and reconstructive surgery who has won awards for her work in clinical, basic science and education research.
Sheâll talk about how reconstructive surgery has been around for thousands of years, with evidence of it having been practiced in ancient Egypt and India, and has made advancements in the course of major wars. Those who practice it have been innovators in medicine, playing a major role in breakthroughs and winning the Nobel prize for kidney transplantation.
The need for plastic and reconstructive surgery has stemmed largely from how much our appearance influences how we navigate our worlds and how others regard us. There was a time, in fact, when people in American prisons were offered plastic surgery as an intervention against recidivism. Yet reconstructive surgery also has faced opposition, such as religious bans on its practice stemming from the belief that physical differences are a manifestation of spiritual sin.
Fast forward to now when plastic surgeons treat patients of every age for every kind of ailment, from congenital differences to trauma to cancer. Yes, some plastic and reconstructive surgery is to help people conform to tabloid- and social media-driven narratives of what defines beauty, but the field involves a lot more than injecting Botox and shaping buttocks. Michele is both the Founder of Rosieâs Farm Sanctuary and a licensed Psychotherapist. She shares how she transformed her grief into a vision for Rosieâs Farm Sanctuary.
This talk will explore how grief became a blueprint for healing and real-world change, and how her vision became a reality.

Mindful Hike by the Creek at Catoctin Mtn. Park
Come take a mindful and sensory meander along Big Hunting Creek in Catoctin Mt. Park, Thurmont, MD with the forest & water as our guides. This is a nature connection experience. Pace of this 3.74 mile round trip hike along the white & orange blazes toward the Lewis Property will be unhurried along dirt and rocky trails that move between the tree canopy and creek's edge. There are some small hills to navigate with no more than 500 ft elevation but still require aerobic capability. We will have time to be social while also experiencing social silence, gentle forest invitations and a short nature meditation by the creek.
**Bring**: water, snacks, bug repellant, sunblock, something to sit on, good walking footwear & appropriate clothing for the weather.
**Fee**: There is no fee for this hike, but SCPRO appreciates a voluntary $2 per person donation to support the costs of Sierra Club's many volunteer-led activities. Please bring cash or donate at **www.sierraclub.org** where you can also join our national club or state chapters.

CMG Gives Back: Serve Brunch at FAITH MISSION GRANT KITCHEN!
Join us as we get together to get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event! We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, weâll help âcreate a better worldâ by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event:
FAITH MISSION â GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces.
PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
LOCATION: Faith Mission â Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area. Below are some links / attachments with additional info/details:
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing all of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain youâll be able to attend. week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. Dodgeball is back again!
If youâve been wanting to come out, this is an easy one to join. Weâll be playing for about 1.5 to 2 hours, you do not need to bring any equipment, and no experience is needed.
We use a specific set of rules and equipment to make the games run better and keep them fun for everybody, not just people who already know how to play.
