An AWS Container Journey (AWS UG Nürnberg 04/26)
**Hey fellow AWS enthusiasts! ✨**
This April we welcome **[Philipp Hoyer](https://www.linkedin.com/in/philipp-hoyer-621555174/)**, Lead Engineer at Rackspace Technology. He'll walk us through a journey of AWS' popular containerization services Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS running on Fargate by discussing which fits best for which use case, where EKS can make you go nuts and when ECS might shines brighter - or vice versa.
**📆 Tonight's Agenda**
19:00 - Welcoming
**19:15 - Talk by Phillip**
20:15 - Networking
Thanks to our friends at **[CodeCam:N](https://www.codecamp-n.com/)** who open their offices for us and sponsor food and drinks for this evening.
Looking forward to seeing you 👋🏻

The talk ⤵️
**An AWS Container Journey - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly featuring ECS and EKS**
EKS on Fargate promises fully managed Kubernetes with zero node management—but the reality is often more complex than expected. This talk explores the journey of building a production workload on EKS Fargate, starting with the initial motivations and architectural decisions.
It uncovers three non-obvious pitfalls that only surface during real-world implementation, including challenges with load balancing, EFS integration, and logging. For each case, the underlying issues and the required workarounds are dissected to reveal the hidden operational complexity behind the “serverless” promise.
Based on these insights, the talk takes a critical look at whether ECS on Fargate would have been the simpler alternative. It provides a concise overview of ECS, highlights its own limitations, and delivers a direct comparison between ECS and EKS.
The session concludes with clear, experience-driven guidance on when to choose which service—helping teams avoid costly assumptions and make better architectural decisions in AWS container environments.

Python Meetup / 14.4.
Speaker: **Hrvoje Novak, Anita Banjac,** **LARES - Laboratory for Renewable Energy Systems - FER**
Title: **Python as a Research Workhorse: From Data to Optimal Control in Smart City Systems**
Python is often seen as a glue language for automation and data analysis, but in research it becomes a powerful platform for modeling, optimization, and control. We show how it is used to build advanced decision-support and control algorithms for large-scale technical systems – starting from real-world measurements and nonlinear system models, we move through machine learning and optimization-based control, illustrating how these pieces come together in real smart city applications.
We will take a behind-the-scenes look at how advanced control solutions are built, tested, and deployed in complex, real-world systems.
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
We are in for a treat! Join us on **Tuesday** at MaMa to hear researchers from FER share their experiences from projects they did with industry partners solving real-world problems on a scale. Drinks and friendly discussion afterwards at [Old Pharmacy Pub](https://maps.app.goo.gl/AeaRdnBrMqPiRhvPA) 🍻🍷🥤☕️
Engineering × Product Talks | Fonoa
* kompleksnu logiku kroz više jurisdikcija
* stroge zahtjeve za točnost i auditabilnost
* skaliranje infrastrukture i integracija
* balansiranje brzine razvoja, pouzdanosti i kvalitete podataka
Drugim riječima, o sustavu u kojem je točnost zapravo proizvodna značajka.
**O čemu ćemo razgovarati?**
* kako donositi tehničke i produktne odluke pod pritiskom kompleksnosti
* kako balansirati brzinu razvoja, pouzdanost i točnost sustava
* kako graditi engineering timove s visokim ownershipom i jasnim standardima
* kako product i engineering surađuju kada je sustav globalan i reguliran
* kako AI uvodi nove arhitekturne i produktne trade-offove u modernim softverskim sustavima
**Program**
**Uvodna Prezentacija**
* [Davor Tremac](https://www.linkedin.com/in/davor-tremac-662144a/) – CEO (Fonoa): What we build & why it matters
Uvod u problem koji Fonoa rješava i zašto je izgradnja platforme za globalnu poreznu usklađenost tehnički i organizacijski izazov.
**Fireside chat**
* [Pablo Carranza](https://www.linkedin.com/in/pablocarranza/) – CTO (Fonoa)

DTN - Data Transfer Node - How Fast can your Data Travel?
\| Neki istraživački projekti trebaju prenijeti ogromne količine podataka\. Korištenje stolnog računala i uobičajene mreže možda nije najbolja opcija za postizanje optimalnih performansi\. Postavljanje DTN čvora nije uvijek jednostavno: postoji više vrsta softvera\, određene parametre na poslužiteljima treba prilagoditi\, a udaljenosti dodatno smanjuju performanse TCP‑a\.

Game Dev Working Session (Tysons-Pimmit VA Library Conference Room)
**Location**: Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library (Virginia) Conference Room
A game development **Working Session** involves 3 key parts:
1. Tell people what you're going to do
2. Actually do stuff
3. Show people what you did
That's what we'll be doing for this meeting. We'll briefly tell each other what we're going to do, then work on our projects, then at around 5:30 wrap up to show each other what we did and chat for a bit.
You don't have to stay the whole time, so feel free to drop in and out as you have time.
All game development skill levels welcome. Whether you're bringing a game you're trying to ship in a month, or you're just planning on following some tutorials or trying out a new tool to improve your skills, use this time to make progress.
Working sessions also train you to think about the scope of your work: pick a chunk of work that you can complete in the time that we have. That way you can end the working session with a feeling of accomplishment!
**What to bring**: Laptop, Charger, maybe a power strip if you have one handy, any other game development tools you need. Try to download any software you need before the working session. There is Wifi at this location, but it may be slow if you have to download any large files.
