🌿[Easy] Pirianda Gardens Afternoon Wander — Short & Scenic (2.5 km) GR 2
🌿[Easy] Pirianda Gardens Afternoon Wander — Short & Scenic (2.5 km) GR 2
This gentle afternoon walk will meetup with the longer walk group and offers a beautiful taste of the Dandenongs in a short distance. Even though it’s only 2.5 km, the landscape is wonderfully varied — fern‑filled gullies, soft boardwalks, winding garden paths, and pockets of exotic trees that give the whole area a peaceful, almost storybook feel. There are a few **good little climbs** along the way, the kind that warm the legs and make the short distance feel more satisfying. The elevation is modest — **147 m up and 146 m down** — but enough to bring a sense of movement and discovery as we wander through the gardens and forest edges. We’ll explore some of the loveliest corners of **Pirianda Gardens**, including the rock garden, shaded fern pockets, and the terraces that open into views and quiet spaces. It’s a relaxed, unhurried wander designed for connection, conversation, and simply enjoying the beauty around us. It’s a short walk with a lot of charm — perfect for an easy afternoon in nature. ## 🥾 **Walk Grade & Difficulty** **Australian Walking Track Grade:** **Grade 2–3** **Difficulty:** **Easy–Moderate** Short distance, some meaningful climbs, well‑formed paths, and a relaxed pace. ## 📏 **Distance, Elevation & Timing** * **Distance:** 2.5 km * **Elevation:** 147 m up / 146 m down * **Estimated time:** 1 hr – 1 hr 15 min * **Pace:** Gentle, social, unhurried ## 👥 **Who This Walk Suits** Perfect for walkers wanting a shorter, easier outing with a bit of variety — gardens, forest edges, ferns, and a few fun climbs. [MOD] Fern Forests, Creeks & Garden Trails 13.8 km (Meeting the Easy Walk Group)
[MOD] Fern Forests, Creeks & Garden Trails 13.8 km (Meeting the Easy Walk Group)
This walk begins in one of the most beautiful corners of the Dandenong's, where boardwalks weave through tall tree ferns and the creek keeps close company as it winds through the valley. The air is cool and earthy here, softened by moss, filtered light, and the quiet movements of the forest. Lyrebirds, wallabies, and bright flashes of birdlife are all part of the character of this place, even when they stay hidden among the ferns. As the trail continues, the forest opens just enough to reveal the charm of Beagleys Picnic Ground — a peaceful clearing tucked among the trees, close to the old bridge that sits quietly in the landscape. It’s the kind of spot where you feel the shift in the valley: the creek broadens, the trees rise taller, and the sense of space changes in a way that’s subtle but unmistakable. It’s a lovely moment in the journey, a natural pause where the forest seems to breathe a little deeper. From here, the climb gradually gathers itself. The gullies lift, the canopy stretches higher, and the forest takes on a lighter, more open feel as we rise toward the ridge. It’s a steady, satisfying ascent — the kind that warms the legs and gives you time to settle into the rhythm of the day. At the top, the forest gives way to the gentle charm of Pirianda Gardens. Here we’ll meet the rest of the group for an unhurried wander among the terraces, old trees, and peaceful corners that make this place such a favourite. It’s a garden that invites you to slow down, explore, and enjoy the company around you. terraces and gentle slopes, where old trees stand with a kind of calm confidence and the paths invite you to slow down. There’s a peaceful rhythm to the garden — open lawns that catch the light, shaded corners where ferns gather, and winding steps that lead you from one level to the next without any hurry. It’s the sort of space where everyone finds something different to enjoy. Some wander toward the views, others linger among the trees, and some simply settle into the stillness for a moment. The garden has a way of holding you, of offering a pause in the day that feels both grounding and generous. It’s a lovely place to meet the rest of the group — unhurried, spacious, and full of quiet character — before we begin our gentle journey back toward the valley. When we begin our return, the descent carries us back toward the creek and the cool hush of the valley floor. It’s a walk that moves from fern‑filled gullies to open garden spaces and back again — a beautiful arc of forest, friendship, and shared time on the trail. ## 🥾 **Walk Grade & Difficulty** **Australian Walking Track Grade:** **Grade 3** **Difficulty:** **Moderate** This walk has a steady climb on the way up, some uneven natural surfaces, and a meaningful distance, but it’s well within the comfort zone for regular walkers. The tracks are formed and easy to follow, with boardwalks, forest paths, and a gentle descent on the return. A moderate level of fitness is recommended. The way back is downhill so its a easy return. ## 📏 **Distance & Elevation** **Distance:** 13.87 km **Elevation:** 513 m up / 498 m down **Estimated time:** 4 hr 45 min (including time at Pirianda Gardens) ## 👥 **Who This Walk Suits** Walkers who enjoy a steady climb, lush forest, creekside boardwalks, and a relaxed social pace. Perfect for anyone who loves the Dandenongs when they’re cool, green, and peaceful. ## 📍 **Meeting Point** Olympic Picnic Ground car park, Dandenong Ranges (Arrive a few minutes early so we can begin together.) Due to meeting the rest of the group at 2.30 we will not be waiting for late comers but will share our location for those that want to catch up ## 🚻 **Facilities** * Toilets at the start (Olympic Picnic Ground) * No toilets along the track * Picnic tables at Olympic and Beagleys * Water: bring your own ## 🧭 **What to Bring** * Comfortable walking shoes * Water * Snacks * Weather‑appropriate layers (waterproof jacket recommended) * A sense of ease and curiosity ## 🐾 **Dogs** This walk is **not dog‑friendly** (National Park regulations). ## 🌦️ **Weather & Cancellations** We walk in most conditions, but severe weather (storms, high winds, extreme heat) may require cancellation or route changes. Any updates will be posted on Meetup. ## ❤️ **Safety Notes** * Stay with the group unless you’ve spoken with the leader * Let someone know if you’re feeling unwell or need to slow down * Tracks may be slippery after rain * Mobile reception is patchy in the gullies ## 🚗 **Carpooling** If you’re open to carpooling, feel free to mention it in the event comments. Please coordinate privately and contribute to fuel costs where appropriate. ## 🙏 **RSVP Etiquette** If your plans change, please update your RSVP so someone else can take your place. Garden Walk and Picnic Gathering
Garden Walk and Picnic Gathering
An opportunity to meet and walk in the Botanic Gardens before sharing a picnic. This is an event for those who loves plants and trees, literature, art, environmental history - the organisers are Michael, a landscape architect and heritage consultant with a vast knowledge of local plants and trees, and Lana, a visual artist and musician. We welcome neurodiverse minds, introverts, newcomers, plant lovers, those who care for insects and animals and growing things, who want to re-connect with the natural world as well as make likeminded friends and build a sense of community. We will meet at the Observatory Café, get coffee if we want to, walk in the Gardens and talk about the plants and trees, and then share a picnic. Don’t stress if you can’t bring anything for the picnic, as we will supply food.

Check signage on the day. See this [PDF for more detail](https://athsvic.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/The-Tan-Parking-Map.pdf). **Possible discussion topics** * Latest AI models - Anthropic's Mythos and Fable blocked after US bans foreign use * AI Pause / Stop - will it work? (Regulatory catch-up, xrisk, global-coordination & geopolitical arms races, enforcement & logistics, existing capability overhang) * Technical AI safety - Mechanistic interpretability, linear probes, RLHF, behavioural evals * General AI alignment approaches: control vs motivation: \- control \(External Constraints\) focuses on building walls *around* the AI to restrict what it can do, trip wires etc. \- motivation \(Internal Alignment\) focuses on changing the AI’s inner desires so it *wants* to be ethical/help humans/act in accordance with the well-being of all sentience * AI ethics: how is it related to AI safety? What should be the target for AI alignment? Should the target be aggregate human preferences, religious doctrine, moral naturalism or something else? * Metaethics and ethics * Moral realism: a stance-independent moral ontology, useful for capturing non-arbitrary moral choice * Moral anti-realism: error theory, non-cognitivism, moral relativism etc * Can AI be fault-tolerantly aligned to moral realism or anti-realism? * Is sentience required for moral reasoning or moral deliberation? Can it be a hindrance? * Moral progress and indirect normativity * AI safety, automated persuasion, the orthogonality thesis * How epistemics (including science) makes progress * Health, wellness, and how to live a good life * Latest trends in AI: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude * Economic impacts of AGI, automation, and unbounded inequality * UBI and universal wealth redistribution * The likelihood of future doom or utopia * Human augmentation and hacking human potential * Plato's cave * Fun theory and value theory "All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking." - Nietzsche, *Twilight of the Idols* Philosophy discussions can feel quite sedentary - hence our experiment in cross-pollinating exercise with engaging discussion. Exerting mind and body together may produce a fascinating dynamic. A sedentary lifestyle (and, by association, philosophy) has been linked to depression, anxiety and chronic stress. Ease the anxieties of the armchair philosopher engaging in mental gymnastics with minimal muscle movement - join our raggle-taggle crew of aspiring philosophers walking the talk. Healthy body, healthy mind. Bring elemental protection (umbrellas, sunscreen, etc).
