Profs & Pints DC: Cuba, Our Closest Enemy
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âCuba, Our Closest Enemy,â** on our countryâs volatile relationship with an island nation off Floridaâs coast, with William M. LeoGrande, professor of government at American University and leading expert on U.S.-Cuban relations.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-cuba](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-cuba) .]
The United States and Cuba are fractious neighbors who canât get along but canât move away from one another. From Fidel Castroâs defiant revolution to Donald Trumpâs âDonroe Doctrineâ asserting U.S. dominance in the Western Hemisphere, U.S. relations with Cuba have been acrimonious, tumultuous, and often dangerousâmarked by invasion, attempted assassinations, nuclear confrontation, and half a century of economic warfare.
Gain a deeper understanding of relationships between the two countries with Dr. William LeoGrande, widely recognized as one of the nationâs foremost experts on Cuban politics and U.S. policy toward the island, having authored or edited seven books on the subject, including *Back Channel to Cuba: The Hidden History of Negotiations between Washington and Havana.*
Professor LeoGrandeâs talk will chronicle the trajectory of this unique relationship of âperpetual hostility,â as Henry Kissinger called it, from confrontations to secret talks aimed at reconciliation.
Weâll see how Americaâs playground of the 1950s became a cold war ally of the Soviet Union and how Cuban refugees became a powerful force in American politics. Weâll look at how the end of the cold war changed U.S.-Cuban relationsâor didnâtâand how repeated attempts at rapprochement failed to rebuild the bridges that had burned in the early days of Cubaâs revolution.
Since Fidel Castro left center stage in 2006, U.S.-Cuban relations have lurched back and forth at stomach-churning velocity. Professor LeoGrande, who has advised Congress on Cuba as a member of its foreign policy staff, will explore the stories behind the headlines. Youâll learn how changes from Republican to Democratic presidents produced radical swings in relations between Washington and Havana, most dramatically between President Barack Obamaâs attempt to normalize relations and Donald Trumpâs threats to bankrupt or invade the island. ( Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Tuesday 3.0 and above at Woodley Gardens Park! (Doubles Format)
Please do not arrange to play earlier than the scheduled start time UNLESS you are able to stay till the end of the event, we do not want people leaving early and creating uneven numbers.
Hello members,
Tennis has become much more popular since the pandemic started and court space has been harder to come by. Following these simple rules will help everyone get the most out of MoCo Topspinners Meetup.
⢠If you RSVP for an event, please attend that event or cancel at least two hours before the event starts. Members that no-show will receive one warning then will be benched (suspended) from events for two weeks. Three no-shows can result in a permanent ban. (No-shows create uneven numbers and prevent folks on the waitlist from playing. Please do your part to un-RSVP as soon as you know that you cannot attend an event.)
⢠Members must have a way to communicate with organizers and hosts. This can be through the Meetup app messages or by providing other contact info.
⢠Any member can ask a host or organizer to have their skill rated for event attendance purposes. You will not be allowed to participate in events higher than your NTRP rating. (We may try to limit numbers or have multiple events on a given day to accommodate players of different skill levels and also to help alleviate the court availability problem).
⢠All members shall conduct good sportsmanship and be courteous to other members at all times.
⢠Sexual harassment, racism, sexism or any kind of intolerance will not be tolerated and will result in the permanent ban from the group.
⢠If member receives three warning infractions, the member will be suspended from the Meetup for a period of one month. If a member is suspended twice (six warnings), that member will be permanently banned and any membership dues will then be forfeited.
⢠If you are scheduling to play with others outside of a MoCo Topspinners event, and you know that there is a MoCo Topspinners event scheduled for that day at that time, please try to use courts other than the courts where the event is scheduled, or move your time so that it does not conflict with the Topspinners event.
For a list of complete rules and definitions you can see the MoCo Topspinners front page. If you have questions, donât hesitate to contact us. We are hoping for a fun season but we may have to wait for courts and leave earlier than we are used to. Please be patient as we adjust to this new normal and try a few different things that will hopefully help the situation. Happy playing!
If you would like to attend this event you must be a of minimum 3.0 level. USTA guidelines prior for signing up for the Meetup: https://assets.usta.com/assets/1/15/ExperiencedGuidelines_02142011_V2pdf.pdf
⢠What to bring
Tennis Balls, Racket, and Water.

SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Exploring the Deep Sea
**This talk is completely sold out in advance and no door tickets will be available. You must have purchased a ticket to be admitted.**
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âExploring the Deep Sea,â** a scholarly dive into an enormous and little-understood ecosystem, with Melissa Betters, deep ocean explorer and deep-sea biologist at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-deep-sea](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-deep-sea) .]
If youâre afraid of the deepest, darkest reaches of the ocean, you arenât alone. For centuries, humans have imagined the oceanâs depths to be inhabited by all manner of monsters, from the Kraken to Godzilla.
But what is the cost of viewing over 70% of our planet with fear and aversion? Who benefits from that?
Come to see the deep sea as far more worthy of fascination than fear with the help of Dr. Melissa Betters, a biologist and marine ecosystem researcher who has made nine trips to the bottom of the ocean and taught at Bryn Mawr College and Temple University.
Sheâll take you on a scholarly exploration of various deep-sea ecosystems around the world such as deep coral reefs and boiling-hot hydrothermal vents. Weâll get to know some of the deep oceanâs captivating biodiversity, examining where it lives, what it does, and why it matters to us.
With her help youâll come to see the deep ocean as a tapestry of different environments, each of which host their own forms of life and present their own suite of ecological challenges.
Importantly, weâll also look at how the deep ocean is portrayed in both myth and media, considering how our perceptions are skewed by the rhetoric used to describe it and the images used to depict it.
Despite appearing far-removed and out of reach, the deep ocean is still a part of our planet, subject to all the same challenges and human impacts as life on land. The final part of this talk will examine the variety of human impacts affecting the deep ocean and actions we can take to protect Earthâs final frontier. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

* The **Mount Vernon Trail** passes directly through the park, making it a popular destination for cyclists starting from Old Town.
Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Eugenics Then and Now
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **"Eugenics Then and Now,â** on a dangerous movement in science and its lessons for current research, with Carlo Quintanilla, molecular biologist and health science policy analyst at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-eugenics-then-and-now](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-eugenics-then-and-now) .]
Global concerns about the return of eugenic thinking were reignited by Chinese scientist He Jiankuiâs 2018 announcement of the first gene-edited babies, Lulu and Nana. He was quickly condemned by the scientific community and jailed for illegal medical practice, but he and others around the world continue experiments with goals echoing eugenic ambitions.
As genetic technologies advance at extraordinary speed, society faces a new set of ethical questions about shaping the traits of future generations. Are we entering a new era of eugenics? If so, how should we respond?
Hear such questions tackled by Carlo Quintanilla, who studied rare genetic mutations in human disease as a graduate research scientist and instructor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and now works at the intersection of genomic medicine, science, and society.
Dr. Quintanilla will begin by discussing the origins and history of eugenics, tracing its development in the 19th and 20th centuries as an idea, a scientific movement, and a set of policies. Heâll examine the rise of Social Darwinism in the United Kingdom, forced sterilization programs in the United States, and the atrocities committed by the Third Reich in the name of âracial hygiene.â
From there, heâll explore how our ability to shape human health and heredity have been transformed by modern reproductive and genetic technologies such as in vitro fertilization, prenatal and embryo screening, and genome editing. Youâll learn how these tools hold enormous promise when it comes to the prevention and cure of rare and debilitating genetic conditions, yet also raise profound questions related to their potential enablement of a new, technologically driven form of eugenics.
Dr. Quintanilla will then delve into the ongoing debate among scientists, bioethicists, and policymakers over what should be classified as eugenics today. Heâll highlight recent controversial uses of genetic and reproductive technologies that are pushing ethical boundaries faster than society can define them, from embryo selection for traits like IQ and height to speculative military interest in genetically enhanced soldiers. These examples raise urgent questions: Where should society draw ethical boundaries? Who gets to decide? And is the term âeugenicsâ still useful for guiding policy and public debate?
Weâll close by examining the social, political, and regulatory forces that will determine the future, considering whether they will restrain the push toward further genetic control or accelerate it. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Summer Social: Let's kick off summer with Adult field day at Shadybowl! FREE
Weâre bringing back Adult Field Day.
Last year was a good mix of competition and just hanging out, so weâre doing it again with some new games mixed in. Think team-based challenges, simple races, and a few things inspired by game shows.
You donât need to be athletic. Most of the fun is just being part of a team and getting to know people you wouldnât normally talk to.
The goal isnât really winning. Itâs meeting people, laughing a bit, and leaving knowing a few more names than when you showed up.
If you stick around after, weâll have a potluck, a bonfire, and a couple comedians in the evening.
