❄️⛳️ Don Valley Golf Course Winter Walk with lunch at Swiss Chalet!
❄️⛳️ **Don Valley Golf Course Winter Walk**
**Yes, we’re walking a golf course. In winter. Because we can.**
Did you know that in the winter you can actually **walk the paths of Toronto-owned golf courses**? No golfers, no carts — just wide open space, fresh air, and a completely different way to experience the city. It feels a little bit sneaky, a little bit special, and very *“I didn’t know you could do that.”*
Join us for a **short, easy 90-minute winter walk** through **Don Valley Golf Course**. It’s something different, surprisingly peaceful, and a great excuse to get outside when most people are hiding indoors. The trails may have snow, the air will be crisp, and yes — **it will be cold**… but that’s part of the fun.
There is **no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing options**. Dress properly and you’ll be totally fine — maybe even smug about it 😏❄️
Miss this and you’ll later say, *“Wait… you walked a golf course??”*
***
🍗 **LUNCH AFTER**
After the walk, join us for **lunch at Swiss Chalet** — always a group favourite with warm food, fair prices, and cozy winter vibes.
*(You don’t have to join for lunch, but it’s highly recommended.)*
***
⚠️ **IMPORTANT NOTES**
• If the **TTC is closed** this weekend, we’ll move the event to another date
• This walk happens in **cold and snow**
• **Do not sign up** if you’re not ready to walk in winter
• Event will only be cancelled if it reaches **-20°C**
***
📍 **MEETUP LOCATION**
I’ll be waiting **near the Shell gas station**, wearing my **famous Moose Hat** 🦌
(Easy to spot, even in a snowstorm.)
***
🎒 **WHAT TO BRING**
• Water
• **Good boots** (very important)
• Gloves & hat
• Something warm to drink ☕
• A snack
***
⏰ **LEAVING TIME**
Any time you like — stay for the full walk or head out when you’re ready.
👀 **NOT SURE YOU CAN MAKE IT?**
You can **just show up** or decide on the day. Winter plans don’t need pressure.
***
📱 **Don’t forget to join our WhatsApp group** – [CLICK HERE!](https://chat.whatsapp.com/H59mSCbsAi018gYANrKAnc?mode=ac_t)

❄️ Wide paths. Winter air. A golf course with no golfers.
This is one of those walks people don’t realize they want… until they do.

The Global Arms Trade! (LECTURE ON THE GO - 2026
\*\***The Toronto History Walks Explorer Pass is available. Get it now for $125.00 for 1 year of unlimited tours, email**
**torontohistorywalks@gmail.com**
**for more information or for signing up!\*\***
We have an amazing "Lecture on the Go" series for 2026. New topics and fascinating stories abound! Join us and learn about the world and keep active and warm during the winter months!
I started this walking classroom when we were under that horrible cloud called Covid. This series was popular and helped people get out and back into society and life. The series is back for 2026 with 6 new topics for exploration over the winter and spring months.
The "Lecture on the Go" Series is open only to members who have purchased the YEARLY MEMBERSHIP PASS, it's free for those members. If you wish to attend a lecture and you are not a yearly pass member then the price **per** lecture is $20.00.
This first lecture is focussed on the Global Arms Trade. How safe are we in a world of lies and corruption where the almighty dollar rules over life and death itself.
You would be surprised at the hidden secrets I have found during my research, and how arms are bought and sold in the international market. How money is laundered offshore, and brought back for school programs and senior centres. All these needed programs come from the trade in not only guns, but also in weapons of mass destruction.
In a business, and it's a business, which consumes trillions of dollars of taxpayer's money, and results in war and destruction all in the name of money and power. You will never view this world the same again. This topic is timely and fascinating to anyone who is interested in where money comes from, and where it goes when it leaves our pockets.
Hope to see you there!
Topics upcoming in the 2026 series of lectures are as follows.
\*The Global Arms Trade (January 31)
\*Dante; The Hidden Meaning Behind The Divine Comedy (February 28)
\*The 250 Year History of Encyclopedia Britannica: From Print to Digital (March 28)
\*Hidden Wonders of Canada; Northern Ontario History and Guide (April 25)
\*Philosophy 1: Great Minds of the Western World: Goethe to Kant! (May 30)
\*Philosophy 2: Great Minds of the Eastern World: Chuang Tzu to Dalai Lama (June 20)
This is the first event in the "Lecture on the Go," series for 2026!
Hope to see you on this "Lecture on the Go!" So book your plans now!
This event is for all levels and walkers, there are a few steps here and there to navigate, but mostly on one level. Mainly this event in a non walking event.
The lecture begins on the steps of Old City Hall at the northeast corner of Bay Street and Queen Street West.
This lecture event has a ticket price of $20.00 per person, and is **free with the yearly membership pass**. Hope to see you there!
\*\* **Please note: Please e-transfer the ticket amount when booking your space for this tour! You can e-transfer to the following email at:**

Mob Programming at Mofer Coffee
Let’s do some coding together at a cafe! No more working alone in the weekend. Here, we write code together. And I mean together together. Not occupying-the-same-space-but-separate together.
Here’s how it works: Jennifer brings her mobile app project, tells everyone that it is like Pinterest for recipes and she’d like to work on the nav bar. Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jennifer’s laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions.
If you’re feeling stuck on your own project or need a motivation boost, bring it to mob programming!
Want to learn by watching how others code and solve problems? Join someone else’s project at this event!
Oh and we love your half-done projects that you are a bit embarrassed to share. Absolutely bring those to the event!
**Discord**:
We use Discord to share screen & code snippets during the event. Also feel free to share your projects here before the event!
https://discord.gg/Da9fZFxPfs
**Event policy**:
* We have 0 tolerance for harassment.
* We don’t allow the projects that are not meant to be shared in public such as school assignments, interview tasks, or trade secrets.
* The goal is to write code. We discourage you from pitching business ideas here, doing code reviews, or spending the whole event on planning what to do.
* Please buy a drink, and tip the barista well.

Snow loops of Detonia Park (4.5 km)
Golf courses are not just for golf. In winter, city-owned courses become cross-country skiing and snowshoeing territory. Detonia Park is one of them and is also the closest to a subway station. There's also good food nearby.
After romping through the golf course, we'll head west to another potentially snow-covered field. Then, it's on to Little Bangladesh along Danforth Avenue, where you can check out Bengali supermarkets and snacks. The hike ends at a Bangladeshi restaurant.
This event depends on snow. If there is heavy snowfall, you can ski or showshoe the golf course portion of the hike. Walking in the snow loops is not recommended. If you must, wear muck boots and traction aids. If there is no snow and ice, we'll just walk.
After the golf course, the rest of the route is on foot.
**Highlights**
1. Detonia Park Golf Course car park (depart 12pm)
2. Golf turf blanketed in snow (or barren and grey)
3. Crescent Town
4. Shohid Minar
5. Adi Bikrampur Sweets (depart 1:05pm)
6. Bangladeshi supermarkets
7. Shaad Restaurant (arrive 1:30pm)

* Older downtown parks with **recent upgrades and improvements**
* **Brand-new parks** — some finished, some still under construction
* A **refreshed and facelifted section of the PATH**
* The **relocated bus terminal**
* A surprisingly **sad indoor mall**
* And plenty of lesser-known downtown details you’ve probably walked past without noticing
***
### 🏙️ A Little PATH History
The **PATH** is the largest underground pedestrian network in the world, stretching **over 30 kilometres** beneath downtown Toronto.
What began in the early 1900s as simple underground connections between buildings slowly evolved into a climate-controlled city beneath the city — linking office towers, transit hubs, shopping areas, food courts, hotels, and attractions.
Love it or hate it, the PATH is a uniquely Toronto creation — confusing, practical, occasionally bizarre, and endlessly fascinating.
Nick has even led **curated private tours of the PATH**, featured in *NOW Toronto*:

Session Abstract
**No Map Required: Geospatial Analytics Directly in Your Data Warehouse**
Think geospatial analysis requires specialized GIS software? Think again. This session introduces you to shapefiles and spatial operations right inside your database—no mapping application required.
We'll demystify shapefiles (what they are, how they work, and where to get them) and show you how nearly every modern database —from DuckDB to Snowflake, supports spatial operations. You'll see practical demos covering spatial joins, distance calculations, and how to determine if two shapes interact with each other.
Whether you're a data engineer optimizing delivery routes, an analyst aggregating metrics by geography, or a BI developer building location-aware dashboards, this session will show you how to unlock powerful spatial capabilities already built into your database stack—no specialized tools required.
\*Please note, that we will be using Microsoft Teams for the online portion of this meeting. You may want to join a few minutes early to ensure you do not have any issues. If you are attending in person, there are large TVs at the office, and you do not need to bring a laptop or use Teams.

Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Compensation Data
**People Analytics 101: Making Sense of Compensation Data**
Compensation data is one of the most widely used and widely misunderstood forms of people analytics.
The session will cover where compensation data comes from, including market pricing data, internal payroll data, and benchmarking sources, and how companies think about structuring and analyzing that information. We will explore how compensation data is leveraged to set salary ranges, manage internal equity, support hiring and retention, and align pay with business strategy. A portion of the session will address common data challenges and limitations, such as market noise, inconsistent job matching, and incomplete datasets, while keeping the primary focus on practical use rather than technical depth.
The session will also look ahead at where the space is going, including the growing impact of pay transparency laws, expanding pay equity requirements, and emerging regulations in the US and Europe that require organizations to report on gender and pay gaps. The goal is to give attendees a clear mental model for how compensation analytics works today and why getting it right is becoming increasingly critical.
(note: we are back at Rev1 this month!)
**About Our Speaker**
