Profs & Pints DC: What Digital Detectives Find
Profs & Pints DC: What Digital Detectives Find
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“What Digital Detectives Find,”** on the afterlife of your digital data and the methods of those who investigate it, with Jim Jones, associate professor at George Mason University and cyber security and digital forensics expert. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-digital-detectives](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-digital-detectives) .] What happens when you delete digital data such as a picture, video, or email message? The truth is that “deleted” doesn't mean “gone,” and digital forensic investigators can extract and make sense of the residual fragments left over from data often assumed to be gone forever. Learn about the field of digital forensics—and the lessons it offers those who worry about sensitive data being exposed—with Jim Jones, who has been a cyber security and digital forensics practitioner, researcher, and educator for more than 30 years. You’ll learn how all investigations today, criminal and otherwise, to some degree involve digital forensics, an interdisciplinary field that draws from computer engineering, computer science, information technology, law, and ethics. Digital forensics doesn’t just respond to specific incidents, but also seeks out threats within organizations, analyzes malware, and buttresses cyber security. Much of the work of Dr. Jones, his colleagues, and students involves examining digital systems of all types to understand how data persists and decays and how it can be found and recovered. Dr. Jones will discuss how what happens to the digital data that you deleted depends on the type of device you are using, along with a host of other factors. You'll learn how digital data is stored on different devices and what does and doesn’t happen when you delete that data. You'll see examples of data extracted from different devices, demonstrations of what can be inferred from these remnants, and how investigators can tell if such remnants are genuine or not. Finally, you'll learn about strategies to mitigate the risk of exposing sensitive data. Dr. Jones will sort those that work from those that don’t. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image: A digital forensics examiner works with evidence in the FBI’s New Jersey Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (FBI photo).
LIVESTREAM | Two Trips, Two Strategies: When a JGOOTer Masters the Skillset
LIVESTREAM | Two Trips, Two Strategies: When a JGOOTer Masters the Skillset
Click here to attend: [https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams](https://www.jgoot.com/livestreams) Some trips are fixed. Some trips are flexible. Some are mostly cash. Some are almost entirely points. The mistake is thinking those are different games. They’re not. In this special session, JGOOT Advisor Ajay breaks down two completely different trips booked back-to-back: • A fixed-date Hawaii family trip for five • A three-month Asia adventure starting in late February One required specific dates and limited flexibility. The other leaned heavily into optionality and points. One used a mix of cash and over 90,000 points. The other unlocked nearly $18,000 in travel for around $1,000 out of pocket. Different constraints. Different strategy. Same skillset. It’s time for: **Two Trips, Two Strategies: See What’s Possible When a JGOOTer Masters the Skillset.** Ajay will walk through how he thinks about flexibility, how he chooses when to use cash versus points, and why there’s no such thing as “a points trip” or “a cash trip” inside JGOOT. Inside this session, you’ll learn: • How to approach fixed-date travel without abandoning strategy • How flexibility dramatically increases leverage • How to decide when to deploy points and when to preserve them • How JGOOT becomes a skill you use on every trip, not a tactic you turn on and off This isn’t about showing off a big redemption. It’s not about extremes. It’s about understanding that once you master the skill, every trip becomes an opportunity. Whether you’re planning a family vacation with fixed dates or dreaming about a long-term adventure, you’ll walk away seeing exactly what’s possible when strategy compounds over time. PauseAI Capitol Day of Action
PauseAI Capitol Day of Action
**Now is the Time for Action!** The US must lead the way on regulations to ban unsafe superhuman AI! Humanity stands at a crossroads. Unless we work together, reckless development of artificial intelligence (AI) could endanger us all. A handful of companies are racing to be first to build superintelligent AI – systems vastly more powerful than human beings. Meanwhile, leading AI scientists and whistleblowers warn that these systems could escape our control and cause the end of human civilization. But this is not inevitable. We can make the wise choice. Rival nations have worked together in the past to reduce nuclear arsenals, restrict chemical and biological weapons, reject human cloning, and save the ozone layer. We must do the same now for superintelligent AI. Join PauseAI at our US Capitol Day of Action. As our volunteers from across the country meet with their representatives, we will gather before the Capitol Building to demand regulations on unsafe, superintelligent AI. We will be gathering on the West Front Lawn of the US Capitol Building, on Monday, April 13th, 4-6 PM. This demonstration will be fully permitted by the US Capitol Police; it will be a peaceful, lawful, and respectful call for Congress to protect their constituents. For more information, check out [pauseai-us.org](https://pauseai-us.org/?utm_source=luma). Join us and make your voice heard. Help us ban unsafe AI!
Iran's Grand Strategy, by Vali Nasr
Iran's Grand Strategy, by Vali Nasr
*From the [publisher's website](https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691268927/irans-grand-strategy):* Iran presents one of the most significant foreign policy challenges for America and the West, yet very little is known about what the country’s goals really are. Vali Nasr examines Iran’s political history in new ways to explain its actions and ambitions on the world stage, showing how, behind the veneer of theocracy and Islamic ideology, today’s Iran is pursuing a grand strategy aimed at securing the country internally and asserting its place in the region and the world. Drawing on memoirs, oral histories, and original in-depth interviews with Iranian decision makers, Nasr brings to light facts and events in Iran’s political history that have been overlooked until now. He traces the roots of Iran’s strategic outlook to its experiences over the past four decades of war with Iraq in the 1980s and the subsequent American containment of Iran, invasion of Iraq in 2003, and posture toward Iran thereafter. Nasr reveals how these experiences have shaped a geopolitical outlook driven by pervasive fear of America and its plans for the Middle East. Challenging the notion that Iran’s foreign policy simply reflects its revolutionary values or theocratic government, *Iran’s Grand Strategy* provides invaluable new insights into what Iran wants and why, explaining the country’s resistance to the United States, its nuclear ambitions, and its pursuit of influence and proxies across the Middle East. ***How to find us:*** We meet in the upstairs seating area at Zorba's in Dupont Circle. The world of 2024 is a wasteland after a nuclear apocalypse, and a young man wanders looking for food and… well, you’ll find out. His telepathic dog helps him with his search, and it isn’t long before he finds what he’s looking for. Hwever, it won’t be nearly as good as he thinks it will be in this sleazy and sordid feature that’s garnered a cult following in part from the early starring role for Don Johnson that he’d probably prefer that everyone forgot. ■ Title — *A Boy and His Dog* ■ Director — L.Q. AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s? This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation? We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee. Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Join us as we get together for a Discount Tuesday / Choose Your Movie event to see your choice of two great new films! Option 1 (and the one I'll be seeing) is the top-reviewed comedy-drama, THE CHRISTOPHERS! The film is set in the art world and follows the estranged children of a former artist who hire a forger. It is directed by Steven Soderberg, stars Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel and has been earning rave reviews on the indie circuit. Option 2 is the latest action-thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL! The film follows a temporary small-town sheriff who uncovers dark mysteries after a local bank robbery. Here are descriptions, trailers and our plan for this event: THE CHRISTOPHERS: The children of a once famous artist hire a forger to complete some unfinished, long ago abandoned canvases so they'll have a better inheritance when he dies. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning and James Corden. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film is earning an excellent 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics call it a “dynamic, emotional and surprising journey” and a “compelling chamber piece that works like intellectual comfort food.” Others call the film, an “incredibly funny, comedy drama with plot reversals that make it feel like it’s on the verge of a thriller!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H79-EqzmdwY&t=20s NORMAL: This action-crime-thriller follows a man who comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota to serve as the temporary sheriff. But a bank robbery leads him to a criminal underground reaches throughout the entire town. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley and stars Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. The film comes from the same team that brought us Nobody and the John Wick series, so expect an over-the-top, action-filled thrill ride! TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmm-lM33Qw0&t=19s PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing of both films and will meet in the lobby area about 30 minutes before showtime. Once showtimes are announced, advance ticket purchase is advised (GFC website preferred)! Please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event. Showtimes and complete details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer. PARKING: Close, convenient parking is available in the nearby garage (located between 9th and 11th, just off High St). Bring your ticket with you and have it validated at the theater and for $2, you’re covered for the night! Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
