Labour and the Philosophy of Skill
There is a rich philosophical literature on skills (e.g., chess, ballet, cricket) which focuses both on the mental states of performers (e.g., what is the phenomenology of doing something well?) and on the evaluative dimension of skill and talent (e.g., what makes skilled achievements valuable?). Within this literature, there is a glaring omission of any discussion of skills acquired and expressed in standard workplace contexts, from cafés to warehouses. This talk considers the significance of that omission, both for our philosophical conception of skill and our understanding of action in the workplace. I argue that the phenomenology of workplace skill (which should account for feelings like boredom and fear) complicates our evaluative notions about skill and talent, mainly because it elucidates and reveals as untenable certain assumptions within the philosophy of skill about the evaluative implications of phenomenological states.

**About the Speaker:**
I received my PhD from Indiana University in Philosophy and in Cognitive Science in 2024. My current work focuses on the social dimension of skill and expertise. Specifically, I'm interested in how to apply traditional inquiry into the cognitive and epistemological mechanisms involved in skill (which mainly focuses on individual skilled performers) to skills acquired and expressed by pairs or groups, like team sports or ensemble performances. I have done empirical work on the evolution of human tool use and manufacture. I also have broad interests in social ontology (e.g., the nature of collectives, shared agency, and group dynamics) and the philosophy of work (e.g., the phenomenology of automaticity in the workplace, the structure of skilled action at work, the relationship between standards of expertise and capital). I am co-organizing the upcoming workshop, ["Can Social Ontology Change the World?"](https://sites.google.com/view/social-ontology-and-the-world/home) in October 2026.

This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. The talk will also be streamed online with live chat [here](https://youtube.com/live/nc-C7DB-e4U?feature=share).
About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca):
The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life.
In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society.
The Ethics of A.I. Lab at the Centre For Ethics recently appeared on a list of 10 organizations leading the way in ethical A.I.: https://ocean.sagepub.com/blog/10-organizations-leading-the-way-in-ethical-ai

Healing Mushroom Ceremony - 'Living a Fully Expressed, Creative Life'
**Facilitated by Chris Dub & Marda Sperber**
[FULL DETAILS HERE](https://mailchi.mp/soulguidednetwork/january-march-mushroom-ceremony-18162258?)
This ceremony will support you to nurture and strengthen the new pathways you are choosing to take mentally, physically and spiritually to ensure you are a living a life that feels in rhythm with your body and soul. Receive the support you need to let go of the pain, hurt, sense of unworthiness & not enoughness, as well as the struggle we can all feel victim to at times.
Immerse yourself into a space of love, forgiveness, and compassion, unlearning the ways you've been taught to judge your *very* human emotions and thoughts. ***You deserve to feel the love and support that's all around you, so you can bring forward the gifts and purpose you came here to share.***
The mind can be sticky, but when you experience genuine love it clarifies any confusion of who you truly are. ***This ceremony is an opportunity for just that: to open up to the authentic love that is innate within you, which opens up your heart, and helps you gain control of the mind.***
### **Energies that could potentially arise in ceremony**
***Shamanic medicine ceremonies may open access to a wide range of emotional, somatic, energetic, and spiritual experiences. Each journey is unique, and all expressions are welcomed within a container of safety, consent, and compassionate presence.***
***Energies that may arise:***
* Emotional release such as grief, joy, anger, relief, or deep peace
* Memories or imprints from early life, ancestral lineages, or collective experiences
* Somatic sensations including trembling, heat, cold, expansion, or energy moving through the body
* Kundalini life-force activation, energetic attunements, and realignment
* Encounters with inner archetypes, sacred geometry, spirit guides, animal allies, or symbolic imagery
* Awareness of repetitive patterns or subconscious conditioning
* Messages from past loved ones or benevolent guiding energies
* States of expanded awareness, unity, stillness, or heightened intuition
* Heart opening, deep surrender, electromagnetic field expansion, and embodied presence
*All energies arise only as each participant is ready to meet them and are supported within a regulated, grounded, and loving field.*
**Truly forgive yourself, learning to love the darker aspects that are rising to be seen and witnessed.**
Cultivate a deeper love for the past versions of you, as well as others who have negatively impacted you. Gratitude is the open door to freedom, and ***when you recognize the gifts of the lessons life has given you - it becomes easier to let go of the anger, resentment, and regret***. As you unravel what has been tight within you, there is a natural alchemy that takes place within the body. Energy blocks and stagnation are unfurled, allowing you to open to more love, and the flow of vital life force energy. ***You will feel a loving space to heal and process through old traumas, ancestral karma, and become more astutely aware of ego identification, leading to more freedom, peace, and simplicity.***
**Release negative thought patterns, rewiring your nervous system for peace, harmony, and balance.**
Be held in safe space so you can look at the negative thoughts and limiting beliefs that hold you back from feeling your freest, clearest, most alive and fully expressed self. Regulate your system through the awareness of breath, body (all levels - mental, emotional, physical & energetic), your 5 senses, and extrasensory perceptions.
***As you re-balance and re-align your system you will be able to see your internal experience more clearly, and also recognize why other people are the way they are, allowing you to have more compassion and forgiveness both for others and yourself.***
The more ***aware*** you are, the better ***regulated*** you are, and from that space you can become the master of your domain.
You deserve the space and time to simply be, rest, rejuvenate, and feel the aliveness of living life moment by moment for YOU!
**You are fully supported throughout the entire journey.**
This ceremony includes the optional combination of pure MDMA along with the psilocybin mushrooms. We have found these medicines work very synergistically together, and offer an amplified level of heart opening. The pure MDMA is optional, and the dosing for both medicines will be based upon your intentions, disposition, prior experience, and current state at the time of the ceremony.
After this ceremony you will feel more love for yourself and others, with a heightened sense of courage, strength, and integrity. ***You will want to make better choices, and also have the self-awareness needed to stay accountable to yourself.*** This level of love and clarity will emanate out to reach and impact all those closest to you.
**This is an invitation to open up your heart, and love and forgive yourself through unconditional acceptance. To awaken to your divinity and beauty, and access your greatest gifts of self-healing and conscious creatorship.**
**Ceremony Preparation & Integration**
Prior to the ceremony you will receive an in-depth **plant medicine workbook** to help you prepare, questions to ask yourself and a recommended diet to support your experience.
We will meet as a group before the ceremony for an **Intention Setting Call**, to connect with each other and share our intentions for the journey. You will also receive a **nervous system regulating practice** that supports in expanding internal awareness, grounding, centering and overall mindfulness.
Following the Ceremony we will have an **Integration Call** to support and hold space for continued breakthroughs, challenges and dream weaving.

Adventures in Ecological Horticulture
with Rebecca McMackin
Wednesday, March 18
1:00pm - 2:30pm
Gone are the days when a garden could be ornamental alone. We now recognize the impact that our land care practices have on the ecosystems around us, and can see the importance of encouraging biodiversity. Thankfully, we do not need to sacrifice beauty when we invite butterflies and songbirds into our gardens.
Rebecca McMackin has cultivated gorgeous landscapes in the toughest environments possible: urban parks, school playgrounds, and the sidewalks of New York City. She will take lessons from her work at Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and decades of research to share how those of us who are fortunate enough to care for land, can do it beautifully and ecologically.
Rebecca McMackin is an ecologically obsessed horticulturist and garden designer. She writes, lectures, and teaches on ecological landscape management and pollination ecology, as well as designs the rare public garden.
She is currently Lead Horticulturist for the American Horticultural Society, an Associate with the Harvard Divinity School’s Thinking with Plants and Fungi Initiative, and Consulting Arboretum Curator for Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.
Rebecca spent a decade as Director of Horticulture of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where she managed 85 acres of diverse parkland organically. Their research into cultivating urban biodiversity and ethical management strategies has influenced thousands of people and entire urban parks systems to adopt similar approaches.
She has been published by and featured in the New York Times, Gardens Illustrated, on NPR and PBS. Her garden for the Brooklyn Museum recently won the PPA’s Award of Excellence and her TED Talk has been viewed over a million times. She holds M.Sc. from Columbia University and University of Victoria in landscape design and biology and recently completed the Loeb Fellowship at the
Harvard Graduate School of Design.
This program is presented in partnership with Rooted in Bexley and generously funded by the Bexley Community Foundation and Bexley Community Author Series Fund.
