Thanks for your cooperation.* You want to improve your fluency, your pronunciation and your French skills? Each week, we come up to a different theme. It pushes your conversation skills up. It helps you to speak about many topics and to interact in French in multiple contexts. Regular attendees learn a lot, make improvements and are able to have a chat about numerous topic! The bonus, you will be able to ask questions to an authentic French native! **THE CLASS:** This is a face-to-face conversation class lasting 60 minutes run by a French native & professional tutor (in London since 2016). This is a Conversation Class dedicated to French learners who struggle to have a spontaneous conversation. If you think your French is rusty, if you feel not really comfortable to interact among a group of other French speakers, this class is for you (if not sure, send a message in French to the organiser). The class goes on an adapted pace with a first part dedicated to a chit-chat and then we'll focus on a short text to learn about French culture and the language. We approach the theme, read a short text (you get a copy for the session), speak, learn vocabulary and things about French culture. The theme is always linked to French, the French and France. At the end, we wrap up and keep a few minutes for some miscellaneous questions. After the class, you will get an email with a list of vocabulary (some words / expressions seen along the class). This is a very small group class: maximum of 4 attendees and a minimum of 2. So you will speak directly to the tutor. During the class, the tutor helps you to structure and improve your phrasing, and to develop your understanding. **IMPORTANT** If you are new to our Meet Up, please send ASAP an email at frenchlondonexperience at gmail dot com to introduce yourself, to check your level, to confirm your space and to get the Bank details for payment. **PRICING:** You can pay each time or by block (then you save money) \- £15 per session \(to be paid when signing up by bank transfer \- Bank details on request\) \- £60 for 6 sessions \(to be used within 3 months \- to be paid in advance by bank transfer \- Bank details on request\) People who sign up without paying will be removed from the list. If, after your first attendance, you decide to subscribe to the offer of £60 for 6 classes, you add £45 and then you incorporate your first class in the subscription. The pricing is made to encourage you to attend more regularly as improvements will come with regularity. **TERMS & CONDITIONS** If you are to join, you are more than welcome to sign up. But, please, if you have an unforeseen hitch, up date your status as soon as possible. As spaces are limited, if you don't turn up or if you cancel at the last minute, a space is wasted. Thanks for helping. \- Fees are payable at the booking \- No refund \(exchange for cancellation more than 12 hours before the start of the event\) \- No refund\, no exchange for late cancellation \(less than 12 hours\) or non\-attendance \- People who don't turn may be banned\. If the session is fully booked, please put your name on the waiting list but ONLY if you are sure to be able to attend the session. Bringing the Sock Mob Back to Life
Bringing the Sock Mob Back to Life
**Bringing the Soc Mob Back to Life** Sock Mob has been inactive for quite a while. Some time ago I took over this Meetup after receiving notice that it might otherwise disappear entirely. I never intended to run Sock Mob myself. My involvement has really just been to keep the Meetup technically in existence long enough for people connected to Sock Mob to decide whether it still has a future. This meeting is an attempt to bring together anyone interested in that question. Not a relaunch. Not a volunteering pitch. Just an open conversation about whether there is enough interest, energy and practical commitment for Sock Mob to continue in some form — and whether a group of people wants to explore taking it forward together. Tuesday 9th June **6pm for 6.30pm** Holiday Inn Bloomsbury (Lounge/bar area) Coram Street, London WC1N 1HT IYou can also attend the meeting on Zoom. Simply use the link below. Asian Culture Social Dragon Boat Festival Edition @ Loong Express
Asian Culture Social Dragon Boat Festival Edition @ Loong Express
**\*\*\*START AT 11AM** **Ever wondered what's inside those pyramid-shaped parcels at the Chinese restaurant?** Come and make them yourself! This Dragon Boat Festival, we're hosting a hands-on zongzi making workshop at Loong Express — one of the most fun ways to experience Chinese culture, no language skills or cooking experience required. \*\*\* **🏮 A little bit of history** The Dragon Boat Festival (端午节, Duānwǔ Jié) falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month and is one of the most celebrated dates in the Chinese calendar. It honours Qu Yuan, a beloved poet and statesman from ancient China who drowned himself in protest against a corrupt government. According to legend, the local people were so grief-stricken that they rowed out on the river throwing parcels of rice into the water — hoping to keep the fish away from his body. That's how zongzi were born. More than 2,000 years later, the tradition is still very much alive. Every Dragon Boat Festival, families across China gather to wrap sticky rice in lotus leaves, pack them with fillings, tie them with string, and steam them to perfection. It's a labour of love — and today, you're going to try it yourself. \*\*\* **🍃 What we'll be making** Zongzi are parcels of glutinous (sticky) rice wrapped in lotus leaves and steamed until soft and fragrant. They come in sweet and savoury versions depending on the region, and the fillings vary endlessly across China. Today we'll be making a classic savoury zongzi with: * 🍃 Lotus leaves * 🍚 Glutinous rice * 🥚 Salted egg yolk * 🥩 Pork * 🌹 Red dates * 🍬 Sugar Everything is provided — just bring your appetite and your curiosity. \*\*\* **📋 How the session runs** **11:00am** — Welcome & introduction to the Dragon Boat Festival, its history and traditions **11:20am** — Step-by-step zongzi making class led by an experienced teacher. You'll learn how to soak and layer the leaves, portion the rice, add the fillings, fold, wrap, and tie — the full process from scratch. Each person will make **3 zongzi**. **12:30pm** — Your zongzi go into the professional kitchen to be steamed while you relax and mingle **1:00pm** — Sit down and eat what you made! Any zongzi you can't finish are yours to take home. **Optional:** Stay on after the workshop and enjoy lunch at Loong Express restaurant. \*\*\* **👌 Perfect for you if…** * You're curious about Chinese food culture and want to go beyond just eating it * You're looking for a social, fun activity to do with friends or to meet new people * You want to properly celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival * You've never tried making Chinese food from scratch and fancy giving it a go No experience needed. T is for Thames River Police Museum (Wapping)
John Burns, the trade unionist once famously said of London’s river "Every drop is liquid history". In 1798 a newly formed body of police officers brought much needed law and order to that most historic of rivers. The Thames River Police was the first policing body ever to be set up. Its sole objective was the prevention and detection of crime on the Thames and it was to become the forerunner of many other police forces throughout the world. **Join us for a rare entrance into this museum as part of the ‘Wapping Shindig’ community event run by the Turks Head Charity. (Website under construction).** This small museum located at Wapping police station, which for more than two centuries has been the headquarters of the River Police. The museum is housed in the old carpenters workshop and is administered by the Thames Police Association. It gives an insight into the history of the policing of the River Thames. **Read more here: Review from Wharf Life - [here](https://wharf-life.com/interviews/thames-river-police-museum-is-a-hidden-gem-in-wapping/)** **MEET DETAILS:** **FROM 1.15.pm : MEET AT Captain Kidd pub -** 108 Wapping High Street E1W 2NE **(optional) for a cuppa/ drink before we go in** **2pm: ENTER THE MUSEUM together.** Address: **Thames Police Museum,** Wapping Police Station, Wapping High Street, Wapping, E1W 2NE London Self guided look around. This is a small ish museum, and is a rare opening to the public, but I’m hoping we’ll be ok and not too packed here. **3.30 /3.45 ish pm-Late: SOCIAL (optional)** We'll head to a local pub for a social chit chat over drinks. Address: tbc in the event whatsapp group, for attendees likely on the day. **TICKETS:** **The Museum is free, but we are limiting our group size. Often with free events like this (even with a rare entrance), we find the churn of people through the waitlist can be large, so please go keep your meetup alerts on in a way that works for you, and keep it free in your diary even if you’re on the waitlist.** **GETTING THERE:** Their simple website even has a map! [Here](http://www.thamespolicemuseum.org.uk/museum.html). **EVENT WHATSAPP GROUP:** Please join the event WhatsApp group to help you find the group on the day. This event has an attendee limit as we prefer a smaller, friendlier group. If you RSVP but can no longer attend, please change your RSVP as soon as possible, **otherwise you will be marked as a 'no show'.** We remove members from the group who: \*repeatedly sign up for events then 'no show'. * repeatedly change their RSVP to 'No'. \*are on the event waitlist or have not RSVPd but turn up anyway.
