You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike. Hike is a total of 5.5 miles and 1600' elevation gain. We will bushwhack off of the Appalachian Trail (AT) near the Panorama lower parking lot to Marys Rock. The bushwhack portion is about .8 miles and 1000’ gain, this is very steep and we move at \~ ½ mph with frequent rest stops. After completing the bushwhack to Marys Rock we will continue south on the AT until Byrds Nest shelter for lunch then return on the AT to Panorama parking. This portion is about 4.5 miles. This is rated a B level due to mileage and elevation gain, but please read the paragraph below carefully. ***Bushwhacking involves walking off trail, rock scrambling with potential obstacles such as downed trees, brush, sticker bushes, rocks, mud, stream crossings, slippery leaves and very steep uphills. Clothes may get torn by sticker bushes. **Inflow 6:00 PM - Talks Start \~6:30 PM** **Reston Community Center - 2310 Colts Neck Rd, Reston, VA 20191** NoVA Hackers is a group located in the Northern Virginia area and is made up of Information Security Professionals from all walks of life, from government and private sector, to students and beginners. The monthly meetings are held much like a mini-conference with 4-8 speakers and only a few basic but strict rules. Participation and Permission Active Participation is required for continued membership and is the only due required. Permission is required to be obtained from anyone providing information to the group from the person providing it to be made public by anyone other than the provider. Historically our talks generally run a bit late and we have a hard stop at 9:30pm for the room. If you want to socialize we recommend you arrive at 6 to meet and greet before the talks. We'll do anywhere from 3-5 laps. It's .75 miles around and we usually do 3/4 laps. For safety reasons, we’re going to keep the group to two small groups of eight members each. Sometimes it get crowded there so we don’t want to have any mishaps. 
Afterwards, if we like the group will decide where to grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants at the RIO. If you happen to be late, walk, counterclockwise around the lake and you should see us walking

You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike. **9 miles with 400 feet elevation gain.** ***Join us for a nice hike along the scenic Potomac River and adjoining forests of C&O Canal National Historical Park, Great Falls, Maryland.*** **Description:** We'll start our hike traveling on Burma Road from Anglers Parking lot and proceed to connect to the Gold Mine loop trail to include the Gold Mine Overlook. Once completing that trail, we will then connect to the towpath and head to the River Trail for a short but scenic loop along the Potomac. After that we travel to Potomac Overlook on Olmsted Island for some great views of Great Falls and the cascading water. After reconnecting to the towpath we'll hike back to the parking lot. The route is mostly level with a couple of short elevations in the forest. The pace will be about 2.5 mph. **Bring**: Adequate water/hydration, snacks/lunch, and sturdy hiking shoes since there are some rocky areas and tree roots in the forest. Restrooms are open near the Tavern visitor center and at Anglers parking area. We'll stop about halfway through for lunch/snack at Tavern Visitor Center. **Meet:** We will meet in front of the restrooms at Anglers parking. Do not park across the street at Old Anglers Inn. Classic Half Massanutten to run on the same weekend as the full. We'll setup a car shuttle on Friday night and camp near Waterfall mountain. Then Waterfall to Little Fort Campground near Woodstock Gap on Saturday (21m), and then back to the Signal Knob Parking lot (15m). All mileages are -ish. We'll need some cars to make the shuttle work. We'll meet on Friday at 7:30 PM at Vienna for carpooling since I want to avoid driving the beltway at rush hour. Probably 8:45 PM or so at Signal Knob Parking lot for the car shuttle. The trailhead on the south side is labeled "Massanutten Trailhead" in Google maps and it's located near Waterfall mountain. The parking lot on the south side is small vs the Signal Knob parking lot is pretty large. It's TBD if Chrisman Hollow Rd will be open. If not, we'll park just of US-211 again like last year. Due to the mileage, you should have already be at the member rank for the club. E.g., have done a LM trip with the club in good style. If you're new to the club, there might or might not be a mini-Massanutten the same weekend. During the month of April Juanatán will guide you on a short but beautiful hike at Riverbend Park. This journey of just under 4 miles will take you through varied habitat types with a chance of seeing bluebells in bloom. We will meet at the Vienna South Metro Station at 8:00 AM and carpool to the trailhead. Drive time is about 30 minutes. Please post a comment if you are willing to drive. We will then start making our way back down to the river by following Madison's Escape Trail, Follow the Hollows Trail, and then the Bootlegger Trail once again. After that we will take the Potomac Heritage Trail along the river until we return to the Visitor Center. Afterwards I am planning to stop by Deli Italiano in Great Falls, VA. Dolly Sods is a rocky, high-altitude plateau with sweeping vistas and flora and fauna normally found much further north in Canada. A backpacking trip in this area will expose you to a very diverse and unique landscape with sphagnum bogs, grassy meadows lined by spruce trees, wind-carved boulders, and beautiful mountain vistas. Note - this area can have very unpredictable weather. I've had everything from sunshine, to heavy rain, to even snow and hail as late as May. Pack accordingly. **Trail Details:** We will meet at The Vienna Metro station on Saturday morning at 8am and drive to the Red Creek Trailhead at the southern end of the Dolly Sods wilderness. The drive is about 3 hours - I will drive and am happy to have up to 3 others carpool with me. When we arrive at the trailhead, we will hike about 6.3 miles to our campsite, stopping once to check out the the iconic Lion's Head on Breathed Mountain (pictured in the post). Should be an early day, so feel free to bring cards, adult beverages, or other items to pass the time. The second day, we will explore the rest of the park, which includes the rugged Dunkenbarger trail. The second day is about 9.4 miles back to the car. Have you ever wanted to ***really*** immerse yourself in Pocahontas County, West Virginia? Here is your chance! Last Memorial Day Weekend, DC UL hiked a section of the Allegheny Trail (“ALT”) from Blackwater Falls to Durbin. Let’s knock out the next section this year: Durbin to Sherwood Lake. This section of the trail bisects most of Pocahontas County. Expect wet feet, regular ascents and descents, 4k feet of *daily* elevation change over 4 days, big miles, and very remote hiking. You must be in solid “Veteran Member” status for this one. In addition to this being a physically tough trek, it is at times tough to follow navigationally. The reward? When co-workers talk about Pocahontas around the water cooler, you’ll be able to say confidently, “***do I know*** Pocahontas County!" This section looks much harder than the one we hiked last year—hopefully, it will be just as funny. Then, we’ll drive to Durbin, WV to camp at a campground in town. Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday: We’ll hike SB on the ALT with tentative splits of 20, 19, 14, 16 miles. There may be a restaurant opportunity in Cass for Saturday evening. We pass a gas station convenience store on Monday, but it may be closed on Memorial Day. On Tuesday we may go for swim in Sherwood Lake before reversing the shuttle. We’ll have lunch at Station2 restaurant in Durbin before we drive home. **IMPORTANT: YOU NEED TO TAKE A HALF DAY LEAVE ON FRIDAY AND ALL DAY LEAVE ON TUESDAY (I’M ASSUMING YOU ALSO HAVE MEMORIAL DAY OFF).** I set the group size at 5 to make the shuttle work. I can expand it if we get enough drivers, so join the wait list if interested. I’m limiting this trip to Veteran Members. DC ULers have maps!
