Join Tim on a walk through Soho, Fitzrovia and Bloomsbury in the footsteps of Karl Marx. We'll see where Marx lived and studied; where he wrote the Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital, two of the most influential books ever published; where his daughter, Eleanor, performed Ibsen with George Bernard Shaw, fell in love with a French revolutionary and lectured with Keir Hardie. We'll see where his children were born, grew up, died and were buried; where Karl agitated, organised and got blind drunk. It's a secret history of a remarkable man and, perhaps, an even more remarkable daughter. More generally we'll be looking at London in the second half of the nineteenth century; a place of grinding poverty and disease but also of intellectual ferment, awash with political refugees from every country in Europe. We'll be walking through some of the most historic parts of London with a history stretching back over 350 years. We meet at All Bar One in Leicester Square at 10.30 to start walking at 10.45 and end in a pub by the British Museum frequented by Karl and Eleanor after a hard day's agitating. An exhibition exploring modern worship, power and devotion through painting, sculpture, installation and live pertormance. Uncultivated Gods is a new exhibition by Kevin Kane, bringing together painting, sculpture, installation and live performance to examine contemporary forms of worship. The exhibition considers the belief systems, desires and structures of power that shape modern life, often operating unnoticed or unquestioned. Rather than focusing on traditional religion, the works explore devotion as it appears today, embedded in celebrity, politics, money and social rituals, asking what has been allowed to flourish without notice, and what might - or should - instead deserve our attention. The exhibition presents a series of paintings, sculpture, installation and performance that approach worship not as a fixed belief, but as a psychological and social condition. Figures, objects and materials function as stand-ins for modern gods: power, visibility, identity, aspiration and control. Kane will present an altar at which to pay homage to the world of celebrity, power and where the natural world can be transgressed. At the back of the altar, as is traditional, will be a painting of a familiar deity, selfie-ready. Towering over this painting, a 3 metre-high inflatable sculpture will be presented, and viewers will be invited to give offerings to ensure the gods remain contented. Paintings will include scenes of heaven imagined from a queer viewpoint, alongside landscapes inspired by an episode of the 1969 TV series Civilisation, entitled The Worship of Nature. An animatronic beating heart encased in a ceramic shell raises the question of whether we truly need love to be happy. The exhibition opens with a live performance at the preview event on 19th February 2026. Ten dancers, accompanied by live vocals and a specially composed sound work, will present a piece designed to explore the idols that we worship, and the important deities we neglect. The work has been choreographed by Dan Baines, who recently starred in the ballet adaption of Quadrophenia at Sadler's Wells and, more recently, in Broadway NYC. Sound has been arranged by Massimo Paramour (Torture Garden, Roast) with vocals provided by Rhian Guerrero. The performance will conclude with a DJ set, transforming the preview into a collective ritualistic ceremony.

Come along on Saturday 21st February for a Blue Badge Guided Walk around Holborn & Little Italy! Blue Badge Guides know London better than anyone. They have trained intensively for two years and passed the highest Tourist Guiding qualification in the UK. **About the walk** Come and explore this little known corner of London which was once the city’s Italian quarter. Italian organ grinders and ice cream sellers contributed to the area’s street life while skilled mosaic and figurine makers helped to decorate beautiful St. Peter’s church. The tour will also feature a 12th century church, a road which was once part of Cambridgeshire, a courtyard with bloody connections and the streets which were settings for Dicken’s “Oliver Twist”. Members of the public are invited to view the wonders of the universe through the telescopes of NOVAC volunteers at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. You do not need to be a member of the club or own any astronomical equipment to attend. Telescopes will be provided by the Smithsonian and pre-approved members of the NOVAC. No other personal telescopes are permitted at the event. The event will take place on the bus parking lot of the museum. **Please park your vehicle at the south end of the main visitors lot and follow signs and red lights to the observing site. As a reminder, parking during the event is free.** Have a cosmic question? One of NOVAC's astronomers or museum staff will be happy to help you. As the sky gets dark, be prepared to enjoy the wonders of the night sky! Don't forget to dress warmly. Please check the weather forecast. [Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Hidden Cleopatra,”** an excavation through myth and slander to uncover the real Egyptian queen, with Jacquelyn Williamson, an Egyptologist and associate professor of archaeology and ancient art at George Mason University. A long list of painters have depicted her, Marilyn Monroe and Kim Kardashian have posed as her, and Vivien Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor famously portrayed her in Hollywood films. At the end of the day, however, what most of us think we know about Cleopatra is wrong, the product of the ancient Rome’s “fake news” and anti-Egypt propaganda. Learn about the real Cleopatra—and how our understanding of her came to be so distorted—with Professor Jacquelyn Williamson, scholar of women and power in ancient Egypt, teacher of courses on ancient Egyptian art and archaeology, and author of *Nefertiti’s Sun Temple: A New Cult Complex at Tell el-Amarna.* Dr. Williamson will walk us through how the first Roman emperor, Octavian, created the distorted image of Cleopatra as seductress that we know today as part of his political scheming to defeat his rival Antony and end the Roman Republic once and for all. Cleopatra has been the subject of debate and controversy ever since. William Shakespeare later relied on ancient Roman sources such as Horace and Plutarch in writing *Antony and Cleopatra*, and his play helped give rise to countless other works offering a distorted picture of her. Professor Williamson argues that “Cleopatra was a human being, like you and I,” and “deserves the dignity of being represented as accurately as possible.” Her efforts to set the record straight have met frustration, however—after being extensively interviewed for the recent Netflix historical docuseries Queen Cleopatra, she concluded that it, too, had missed the mark. You’ll gain a much deeper appreciation of the challenges of researching and accurately depicting the ancient past from Dr. Williamson, who also has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, and the University of California at Berkeley and is involved with an ongoing archaeological investigation of Queen Nefertiti’s sun temple.
