Let's meet up and speak English at a museum!
Let's meet up and speak English at a museum!
Our first 'class cultural trip' was really fun so I'm carrying on the series and we're going to keep exploring the British Museum. The idea is we'll meet in the cafe at the British Museum, and then choose which part of the museum we want to explore. We'll walk around it, stopping to look at things we find interesting. I'll help you with the vocabulary you need to talk about what you can see. At the end we'll go back to the cafe to summarise what we've learnt and do a little vocabulary test to see what you can remember from your visit! If you are late, don't worry too much, because we will stay in the cafe until everyone has arrived and then start exploring the museum. I hope to make 'cultural visit classes' to museums/ exhibitions/ galleries into a regular event so let me know which places you are interested in. I plan to choose places that have free entry. I need a minimum of 2 students to run this Meetup. Maximum 5 students so everyone gets a good chance to speak.

The meal will also follow the Georgian tradition of having a "Tamada" (toastmaster) who will lead some toasts during the meal. It is also an opportunity to learn more about travelling to Georgia. Three courses including a welcome drink £65 per person. Additional drinks and wine can be purchased on the evening.

Friendly Chess in Russell Square
Friendly Chess in Russell Square
A laid-back lunchtime of friendly chess in the charming surroundings of Russell Square, Bloomsbury (or in The Atrium Cafe of The Imperial Hotel across the road, if it rains). Whether you're new in town and looking to meet new people, craving some social games, or live/work/study nearby, all are welcome. Chess sets are available to borrow, and there are optional food/drinks from the cafe next to the chess tables. Please don't bring outside food/drinks (other than water), and buy something if you use a cafe table (no need when using the chess tables, which have boards printed on them). This will be a hosted event - if you're the first to arrive, you'll see your host sitting at one of the chess tables with a chess set. Feel free to write in the event to confirm you're going and encourage others to come along. Most of those attending are from other social media groups, so numbers are usually higher than they appear here. Have fun! :)

L is for... London Museum Docklands
**Join us for a visit to London Museum Docklands**, **which tells the fascinating story of London's docks and their profound impact on the city.** The museum is set in a refurbished 200-year-old sugar warehouse and reveals the long history of the capital as a port through stories of trade, migration and commerce, from Roman settlement to Docklands' regeneration. Themed state-of-the-art galleries such as ‘London, Sugar & Slavery’ and ‘Warehouse of the World’ take you on a chronological tour of the port. London's transformation into a global trading hub, the impact of immigration on its cultural tapestry, and the crucial role the docks played in wartime resilience are all highlighted in the galleries spread over three floors. Explore the dark alleyways of London’s Sailortown, an immersive display which recreates the atmosphere of the ramshackle London district, close to the docks, in the mid 19th century. Discover the recent history of the thriving area we now know as the Docklands and how, just over half a century ago, it was a derelict wasteland after the closure of London’s upriver docks. **Read more here:** **[link to website](https://www.londonmuseum.org.uk/docklands/free-galleries/)** **MEET DETAILS:** **FROM 1:30pm: LONDON MUSEUM DOCKLANDS CAFE (optional)** **Address:** Ground floor cafe, London Museum Docklands, No. 1 Warehouse, Hertsmere Road, London, E15 4AL **2:15pm: ENTER THE MUSEUM** **Address:** London Museum Docklands, No. 1 Warehouse, Hertsmere Road, London, E15 4AL **4.00pm: PUB (optional)** We'll head to **[The Ledger Building pub](https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pubs/the-ledger-building-docklands)** for a social chit-chat. **Address:** 4 Hertsmere Road, West India Quay, London, E14 4AL *We're not able to book tables at this pub, but it has a lot of indoor and outdoor space, so we hope to find tables together.* **TICKETS:** General admission is **free,** with no need to book in advance. **GETTING THERE:** **[https://www.londonmuseum.org.uk/docklands/](https://www.londonmuseum.org.uk/docklands/)** **EVENT WHATSAPP GROUP:** Please join the event WhatsApp group to help you find the group on the day. Day trip by train - Hatfield House in Hertfordshire!
Day trip by train - Hatfield House in Hertfordshire!
Come along on Saturday 27th June for a day trip to historic Hatfield House in Hertfordshire! **About Hatfield House** The house was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James I and is a prime example of Jacobean architecture. It replaced Hatfield Palace, built in 1497. Henry VIII's children, King Edward VI and the future Queen Elizabeth I, spent their youth at Hatfield Palace. His eldest daughter, who later reigned as Queen Mary I, lived there between 1533 and 1536. The [Queen Elizabeth Oak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Elizabeth%27s_Oak,_Hatfield_House) on the grounds of the estate is said to be the location where Elizabeth was told she was queen aged 25 in 1558 following Mary I's death. Hatfield House has many objects associated with Queen Elizabeth I, including gloves and a pair of silk stockings that are believed to have been the first in England. The library displays a 22-foot (6.7 m) long illuminated parchment roll showing the pedigree of the queen with ancestors back to Adam and Eve. The Marble Hall holds the "[Rainbow Portrait](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portraiture_of_Elizabeth_I_of_England#The_Rainbow_Portrait)" of Elizabeth. Hatfield House also has formal gardens and extensive grounds which you can walk around and contains many 500 year old oak trees. The house and grounds have been used in countless films and T.V programmes, including: 'Sherlock Holmes' (2009), 'My Week with Marilyn' (2011), 'Paddington 2' (2017), 'Enola Holmes' (2020), the Netflix series 'Bridgerton' (2020) and 'The Crown' (2016). **Train tickets** GroupSave return tickets work out at £8.50 each (purchase on the day in groups of 3 when you turn up). We aim to get the 11:06am train, the journey only takes 25mins. Fast trains going back at: 4:26pm, 4:56pm and the same times past each hour. Stopping trains going to Moorgate at 4:07pm and 4:37pm and the same times past each hour. **Cost** Entry cost to the house and grounds is £23 per person, payable on the day in cash, credit card, bank transfer or Paypal. This includes an audio guide for the house. The house is a 10min walk from the station and we will also look at Hatfield Old Town before we go in. **Become a Full Member** To become a Full Member (£14 a year), either: \- Pay cash at an event \- Pay via Bank Transfer \(TSB Bank plc\, Sort code: 77\-66\-65\, Account no: 00030809\, Account name: Cultureseekers) \- Pay via credit card on the day or in advance \([https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI](https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI)) \- go to PayPal \- [https://www.paypal.com/uk/](https://www.paypal.com/uk/), then click on 'Pay & Get Paid‘, then click on 'Send Money’, put in the email address: [general@cultureseekers.org](mailto:general@cultureseekers.org) in the 'Send Money' box, then 'Next' and then enter the amount to pay. London's Lost Rivers - Walk the River Fleet!
London's Lost Rivers - Walk the River Fleet!
Come along on Sunday 28th June for a guided walk/hike walking the route of one of London's lost rivers - the River Fleet! **About the walk** We will pick up the River Fleet and walk the last 3 miles to where it enters the River Thames. The Fleet is unfortunately completely covered and is now part of sewer system. The walk is part hike/part guided, so on the way I will show you points of interest which would have been on the banks of the River Fleet and tell you more about them. **The River Fleet** The river's name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon *'flēot'* meaning *"tidal inlet"*. Its headwaters are two streams on Hampstead Heath and flows south about 6 miles into the River Thames. Over time, as London grew, the river became increasingly a sewer and when the London sewer system was built by Joseph Bazalgette in the 1860's, the Fleet was covered over and became part of the system. We will walk about 3 miles, so sensible shoes are advised. The terrain is pavements. **Payment** Full Members of the group will be free, everyone else the cost is £7 per person (payable by cash or credit card on the day). June Book Club Meetup
June Book Club Meetup
Welcome, readers! Our June read is ***Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible*** ***Voyage*** **by Alfred Lansing.** A work of nonfiction, and one of the most astonishing survival stories in history, we follow Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew after their ship is crushed by Antarctic ice. Stranded in one of the harshest environments on Earth, the men endure months of isolation, freezing temperatures, and near starvation—yet refuse to give up hope. Lansing brings their ordeal to life through vivid detail and firsthand accounts, capturing both the brutality of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, the story is a powerful testament to leadership, perseverance, and the unbreakable will to survive against impossible odds. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **all** **drinks must be purchased at the bar.** Happy reading! 📖
