SCIENCE MUSEUM: the new Space gallery and Water Pantanal Fire photo exhibition
**IMPORTANT UPDATE
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED FROM THE 7th TO THE 15th FEB SAME TIME. APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.
**
**đď¸This is a free event but we need to book a time slot for our visit. Please book for 1.45pm on the 15th February on the link below:
**
[Book your free ticket here.](https://my.sciencemuseum.org.uk/events?view=calendar&kid=441)
âŠWe will meet at 1.30pm at the museum entrance and wait 10-15 mins for everyone to arrive.
âŠ**Please update your RSVP if you canât make it.**
This Sunday weâll be visiting two powerful free exhibitions âŹď¸
**Exhibit 1**
đ¸ This photography exhibition will take us deep into the Pantanal, the worldâs largest wetland and one of the planetâs most biodiverse regions. Through the lens of acclaimed documentary photographers Lalo de Almeida and Luciano Candisani, the exhibition captures the Pantanal in all its fragile beauty: lush waterways, abundant wildlife, and moments of quiet wonder.
At the same time, the images confront the harsh reality facing this ecosystem today. Deforestation, intensive agriculture, drought and catastrophic wildfires sit in stark contrast to the wetlandâs natural richness, creating a moving visual dialogue between abundance and loss. With over 60 striking photographs, the exhibition is both visually arresting and emotionally charged - a reminder of whatâs at stake, and why it matters.
**Exhibit 2**
đ Iâm sure youâre all familiar with the museumâs ďżźspace gallery however thereâs apparently new things to see! We will make a quick visit to the brand-new Space gallery, a free exhibition celebrating human achievement in space travel - past, present, and future. We are promised iconic spacecraft and remarkable objects up close, from the Apollo 10 and Soyuz capsules displayed side by side for the first time, to the RL10 rocket engine that has powered missions across the solar system.
Other highlights include Neil Armstrongâs Apollo 11 radio headset, the Sokol spacesuit worn by Helen Sharman, the first Brit in space, and a three-billion-year-old lunar rock from Apollo 15.
âŠâď¸ We will take about 1 hour to go through the exhibits then we will go for coffee somewhere inside the museum or nearby.â¨âŠEveryone welcome đâ¨âŠImportant to note:â¨âŠ1. We typically socialise at cafĂŠs after the exhibit, nice, independent ones, not chains and not at pubs. If the event is late on a Saturday we go to a nice bar/pub for drinks after. This meetup is inclusive and everyone is welcome to join.âŠ2. If you get there before everyone and you're not sure what to do or where we are, post a comment on here and I will let you know our whereabouts.âŠ3. Once we go in we may separate, feel free to explore the exhibit by yourself, we don't have to be together. Some people like chatting to others while exploring and other people prefer to be with their own thoughts. You are welcome to express yourself and do whatever helps you feel free.â¨â¨4. If you are late or if youâve booked for an earlier or later time donât worry just go in and youâll find us inside. Keep an eye on the comments as Iâll be posting updates.
National Gallery Picture Hunt
Please aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. The Hunt starts at 1:30. You're losing search time if you're late!
This Sunday Picture Hunt will have different images to the Monday one and is primarily aimed at people not available during the weekdays.
**We meet outside the new Sainsbury Wing entrance further down the building. Iâll be wearing a red Meetup cap. If youâre late, weâll be in rooms 9-16.**
The National Gallery was founded in 1824, after the British government bought a collection of 38 pictures from the banker and collector John Julius Angerstein, consisting of Italian, Dutch and English works.
We have a unique take on Treasure Hunts that broadens your art knowledge while sleuthing around gallery rooms.
You are all presented with a sheet of 20 part images taken from paintings in a few adjoining designated rooms.
You will also have a map of the Gallery. The selected adjoining rooms are listed P, Q, R and S. The clipboard holder enters the room letter to note the image location.
Your collective mission is to find them. Usually itâs groups of three to four depending on numbers.
Or bring a team of up to three guests with you! Check previous winners and Hunt sheet in the pics below.
Dead simple, right? Well, yes, if you can spot them all. Generally though, results are always close.
Check photos for the previous Hunt sheet. If youâre new, you can see what your team has to do. Stella said " I was apprehensive about trying this, but once I did, I loved it, our team was great fun".
We are a happy and friendly group whose membership for some now goes back ten years.
Itâs very addictive wandering around looking at famous artwork. Our events make you see new parts of a painting you hadnât noticed before. Or that fresh work has been introduced.
Weâve done quite a few in the last two years and feel very much at home here. We never get tired looking at famous art.
I think we come here more often than paying Gallery members!
There's plenty of seating around to take the odd rest and look at the same time.
Our Treasure Hunts are interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
We meet outside the Sainsbury Wing entrance further down the building. Look out for me under a red Meetup cap!
The starting process is as follows. The earlier your team sets off, the more time you have. So turning up early ready for a 1.30 start is a bonus.
Team answer sheets have to be back by 3.15.
We meet back in the area next to the Espresso cafe where we mark up. In case of a tiebreak, there will be a general art knowledge numerical question where the ânearest toâ wins.
First team prizes are interesting varieties of chocolate. There is also a prize for the funniest/outrageous team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant.
So thereâs everything to play for. Some players are thinking of team names before they turn up!
We always pop into the local Silver Cross in Whitehall for a quick drink after if anybody so wishes.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers. This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
**There is a ÂŁ7 cash/card charge on the day. I supply a pen and clipboard but it helps you to bring a pen as well to mark your own sheets.**
**Rucksacks now have to be worn front of body.** Items left in the cloakroom are charged at ÂŁ3 per item.
Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed. If texting leave your name.
**Donât forget to cancel via the âEdit RSVPâ button if you canât make it. Please do this well in advance when you know, so it allows good notice for someone else to take your place, and minimizes waiting about time on the day for other attendees.**
**Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**
Visit Burgh House in Hampstead!
Come along on Sunday 15th February for a visit to Burgh House in Hampstead!
**About the house**
Burgh House was constructed in 1704 during the reign of Queen Anne. At the time of construction the Hampstead Wells Spa was flourishing. In 1720 the Spa's physician, Dr. William Gibbons, moved to Burgh House, which he enlarged.
One inhabitant of the house was Israel Lewis, who was an upholsterer. He was involved in a court case in which he was found guilty of creating a nuisance by *"making an inclosed Dung stall"* in his garden, and was fined â¤5 and made to remove it.
In 1858 Burgh House was taken over by the Royal East Middlesex Militia, and served as the headquarters and officers' mess until 1881. The house returned to domestic use in 1884.
The first floor houses the Hampstead Museum, with permanent exhibits on local history and culture. There are also first floor and ground galleries for temporary exhibits of art, local history and culture.
**Cost**

NEAREST METRO STOPS: Smithsonian; Judiciary Square
This eye-opening exhibition introduces North American audiences to the varied visual iconographies of Indigenous Australia, which is made up of more than 250 distinct Indigenous nations. Explore this rich and living history of creativity through over 200 works made by more than 130 artists. Drawn exclusively from the collection of Melbourneâs [National Gallery of Victoria](https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/), *The Stars We Do Not See* offers a rare opportunity to experience some of the most significant examples of modern and contemporary Australian Indigenous art. Charting watershed moments in Indigenous art from the late 19th century to the present, this exhibition reveals a rich history of creativity that predates the arrival of the British.
See the work of trailblazing painters including Anmatyerre superstar Emily Kam Kngwarray and Senior YolĹu artist Gulumbu YunupiĹu, known as "Star Lady," (whose works inspired the exhibition title) along with contemporary innovators such as Brook Andrew, Destiny Deacon, and Betty Muffler. Witness Australian Indigenous art in all its forms, from ochre bark paintings and experimental weavings to immersive sound and video art and powerful photographs.

Masterpieces in Real Life â DC Art Brunch Series - Leonardo & Vermeer
**Masterpieces in Real Life â DC Art Brunch Series**
Inspired by this [Deconstructing.AI article](https://deconstructing.ai/blog-1/f/where-america-keeps-its-masterpieces), this series visits the most important artworks and objects in Washington in small, relaxed Sunday outings. Weâll look closely at several works, share the human stories behind them, and then continue the conversation over brunch nearby. Not a formal tourâjust curious people learning to see together. I'll share a little background on the art and venue pairing for each outing. Here's the proposed itinerary for our first tour at the National Gallery of Art and the current (free) exhibitions while we are there. [A Measured Walk Through the National Gallery of Art](https://deconstructing.ai/blog-1/f/a-measured-walk-through-the-national-gallery-of-art)
SCHEDULE & PAIRINGS
**1) Leonardo & Vermeer â The Quiet Room**
**Sunday, 12:30â3:30**
**Art:**
⢠Leonardo â *Ginevra deâ Benci*
⢠Vermeer â *Woman Holding a Balance*
⢠Bonus: Monet *Japanese Footbridge*
**Meet:** National Gallery West Building, Constitution Ave entrance
**Brunch after (3 min walk):**
**The Smith â Penn Quarter** â bright, easy tables, good for groups
**Masterpieces in Real Life #1 â Leonardo & Vermeer**
Weâll begin where Washington quietly keeps two of the most intimate paintings in the world. Leonardo da Vinciâs *Ginevra deâ Benci* is the only Leonardo in the Americas, yet it behaves nothing like a celebrity. The panel is small, moody, and slightly woundedâits lower edge trimmed centuries ago, taking Ginevraâs hands with it. What remains is a face suspended between confidence and doubt, framed by juniper leaves that pun on her name. Nearby, Vermeerâs *Woman Holding a Balance* performs a different kind of magic: a domestic scene so still you can almost hear the dust settling. The scales may hold pearls or nothing at all; scholars still argue, which is part of the pleasure.
The National Galleryâs West Building is the perfect stage for this slow kind of lookingâmarble floors that encourage quiet footsteps and skylit rooms that make even hurried visitors lower their voices. Weâll wander from Leonardo to Vermeer and then to Monetâs luminous bridge, tracing how artists turned light into a language. No lectures, no examsâjust stories about missing hands, hidden pigments, and the surprising ways these works ended up in Washington instead of Florence or Delft.
After the gallery, weâll walk a few minutes to **The Smith** in Penn Quarter, a bright brasserie that feels like the cheerful cousin of the museum: high ceilings, good bread, and tables made for lingering conversations. Over brunch weâll compare first impressionsâDid Vermeer feel calm or unsettling? Is Leonardoâs Ginevra shy or simply unimpressed with us?âand let the art continue to do what it does best: start arguments among friends.
