**About Wilderness Union**
Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people.
Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad.
Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming!

This city has changed over the last few years. But what were the events that propelled the city in new ways, new avenues. This tour looks at the events that truly changed the city for good and some say for bad.
Buildings have been erected and others torn down, but certain happenings in the city changed the path forward forever. And those events were viewed as monumental at the time. Today, we see the outcome of let's say Hurricane Hazel's fury, the development of our parkland. Or the building of the subway system in 1954.
The first Great Fire, Christie Pits Riot, War of 1812, Constance Hamilton, Hurricane Hazel, and the creation of the Toronto Islands, all changed Toronto's destiny. But over time, those landmark stories have been forgotten. We need to bring them back and highlight them for the next generation! Let's get started! This tour explores the downtown area in great detail, and uncovers the stories that changed our impression of the city.
This walking tour begins on the **steps of Old City Hall.** This walk is for all fitness levels. Please dress for the weather, and bring your love of history was well.
This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person!

Art, Architecture & a Brisk Boardwalk Adventure
Why hibernate when you can bundle up and experience one of Torontoās most imaginative winter traditions?
Launched in 2014, **Winter Stations** invites the international design and art community to reimagine the lifeguard towers along Torontoās east-end beaches for the winter season. What began as a bold local collaboration between RAW Design, Ferris + Associates, and Curio has grown into a global design competition, attracting entries from over 90 countries and transforming the quiet winter shoreline into an open-air gallery at the waterās edge.
Itās creative. Itās architectural. Itās windswept and wonderfully Canadian. And itās even better with good company.

On a warm June day in 1985, Air India flight 182 left Toronto Pearson headed east for Montreal, London, and onward to India, with 329 passengers and crew. The flight never reached London. It was destroyed by a suitcase bomb over the north Atlantic Ocean off the shores of Ireland, resulting in one of the most complicated and politically sensitive investigation in recent Canadian history. Since a vast majority of the passengers were Canadians, this was the worst terrorist attack against Canadians in our history.
The outcome divided families and shone a spotlight on wrong doing at all levels here and abroad. A fascinating story, but a tragic one for the victims. This tour looks at the story in detail and the fallout.
This tour also examines the history of the Humber Bay Shores, and the historic Mimico Creek, or "where the passenger pigeons take flight." The area is a walkers paradise as it follows the shoreline for great picture taking moments as well.
If you have not explored Mimico and the Humber shores, or new to Toronto, this walk is for you.
The price of this tour is $15.00 per person!
This extensive walking tour begins at the Humber Streetcar Loop on Lakeshore Blvd and the Queensway! We end the tour at Mimico Avenue in Mimico Village on Lakeshore Blvd West.

Rouge Nat'l Park: Woodland Trail
Our group will leave at the posted time, so please arrive early. Please cancel your RSVP if you can't make it.
For those carpooling, please do not mark your passengers as +1s (since I'm adding based on the "vehicles" in attendance, not hikers). Just ensure that they're aware of and agree to SFH rules and regulations. Everyone will start on the waitlist, and some will be moved to the going list on Thursday.
How fast, how far? Assume 4.5 km/h for a distance of 6.75 km. Terrain is mostly flat, but it does have a small hill or two. So we'll replace the difficulty of climbing with speed. The route is a "there and back again", so we will finish where we originally start from.
Bring water and wear good hiking/trail shoes or boots.

Gone are the days when a garden could be ornamental alone. We now recognize the impact that our land care practices have on the ecosystems around us, and can see the importance of encouraging biodiversity. Thankfully, we do not need to sacrifice beauty when we invite butterflies and songbirds into our gardens.
Rebecca McMackin has cultivated gorgeous landscapes in the toughest environments possible: urban parks, school playgrounds, and the sidewalks of New York City. She will take lessons from her work at Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and decades of research to share how those of us who are fortunate enough to care for land, can do it beautifully and ecologically.
Rebecca McMackin is an ecologically obsessed horticulturist and garden designer. She writes, lectures, and teaches on ecological landscape management and pollination ecology, as well as designs the rare public garden.
She is currently Lead Horticulturist for the American Horticultural Society, an Associate with the Harvard Divinity Schoolās Thinking with Plants and Fungi Initiative, and Consulting Arboretum Curator for Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.
Rebecca spent a decade as Director of Horticulture of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where she managed 85 acres of diverse parkland organically. Their research into cultivating urban biodiversity and ethical management strategies has influenced thousands of people and entire urban parks systems to adopt similar approaches.
She has been published by and featured in the New York Times, Gardens Illustrated, on NPR and PBS. Her garden for the Brooklyn Museum recently won the PPAās Award of Excellence and her TED Talk has been viewed over a million times. She holds M.Sc. from Columbia University and University of Victoria in landscape design and biology and recently completed the Loeb Fellowship at the
Harvard Graduate School of Design.
This program is presented in partnership with Rooted in Bexley and generously funded by the Bexley Community Foundation and Bexley Community Author Series Fund.

Contra dance with Big Scioty on March 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Frank Buschelmann**
**Band: The Rosenthorns**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like youāve seen in period films such as āPride and Prejudiceā, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. Thatās English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like āswing your partnerā and ādo-si-do,ā like youāve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alĆ” āRiverdance.ā Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THATās Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
