Transforming Work - Five Week Buddhism Course
Booking is essential on [dublinbuddhistcentre.org](https://dublinbuddhistcentre.org/events/transforming-work/)
Starts Monday 18th May, 6.30 - 8.45pm
For most people work is an unavoidable fact of life. Work makes people and breaks people. Work can be extremely challenging and is often where our values and ideals come into direct conflict with outside forces and objective demands.
How can we meet these challenges meaningfully and effectively? How can we bring Buddhist principles and practices into our work? On this 5-week course we’ll be developing an insightful attitude to work that will help us to be more genuinely creative and productive.
Rather than seeing work as a necessary evil we’ll see how we can embrace work as an opportunity to create positive connections with others and free ourselves from unhelpful habits.
**Cost**
We do tiered pricing, depending on the circumstances.
* €150 waged
* €120 low-waged
* €90 unwaged
* €75 for under-25

AI, Agents & NASA: An Evening with IBM Research
Welcome to an evening with IBM Research where we discuss AI, Agents, NASA and everything in between.
An event hosted by **IBM Research** \- PyData Ireland is excited to be a community partner\.
This is an inaugural **Open Source Science Dublin** meetup, where cutting-edge scientific research meets open-source technology, AI, and cloud-native infrastructure.
Expect **technical deep dives**, **cross-disciplinary conversations**, and (of course) **pizza** 🍕.
For this first event, we’re exploring one of the most exciting frontiers today: **agentic systems for scientific discovery**, and how autonomous and semi-autonomous AI systems are transforming the way research is conducted, validated, and scaled.
You’ll see real-world systems in action, hear from both applied and research perspectives, and walk away with a clearer picture of how agents are moving from hype to scientific infrastructure.
## **Talks**
**Accelerated Knowledge Discovery at NASA: Building an Agentic AI Research Companion**
* **Speaker:** James Barry, Staff Research Scientist, IBM Research
* **Description:** A practical look at NASA’s AKD platform: a chat-driven frontend orchestrating a multi-agent backend (planner + literature/data/code search) to turn questions into traceable, end-to-end scientific research—faster, more systematic, and with human oversight.
**Production-Ready AI Agents: Containerization, Sandboxes, and the LangChain Stack**
* **Speaker:** Fabio Lorenzi, Staff Research Scientist, IBM Research
* **Description:** Building secure, scalable AI agents for industrial time series analysis using isolated code execution, LangGraph for agent orchestration, and FastAPI for production deployment—bridging foundation models and real-world maintenance workflows.
**Science in the Agentic Era: Structured Experimentation with *ado***
* **Speaker:** Michael Johnston, STSM, Discovery Systems; Manager, Next Generation Systems, IBM Research
* **Description:** A research-first framework for agent-assisted discovery: *ado* encodes the problem space and experimental plan as schemas, enabling agents to propose and refine studies while keeping every run transparent, reproducible, and scientifically auditable.
Meet up, Warm up, and Get Moving to Get Fit :)
We will start the session with some light stretching exercises to warm us up, and help to prepare us for the run. The pace of the run will be steady, depending on who is running with us on the day.
Days when we have a large group we may break into multiple groups, each operating independently at their own pace.
Saturdays are good for intermediate runners, and is usually a 10km run, again at a steady pace.
If you're looking to get into running, come along on Tuesday or Thursday mornings and I will coach you, at your pace, to get you up to running (jogging) to 5km without stops. The only thing I will ask, if you're a beginner, is that you're able to walk for approx 30 minutes at a relaxed pace.
PLEASE NOTE: That, if you RSVP a particular event, then please ensure that you attend, as there may be other members relying on you for company on the run.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Any run or activity that you participate in with the group will be at your own risk.
Usually we have a post run (after our cool down) coffee in the Dash container at the Hole in the Wall pub.
Building Canvas Apps using AI & Bulk Operation in Dataverse
**Building Canvas Apps using AI with the MCP Plugin**
Build Canvas Apps with AI—without premium licenses or code-first tooling. The MCP plugin gives makers an approach. Join me to explore what it can (and can't) do.

Relating Lab: The art of receiving
**An evening for over-givers**
I asked the people who follow my work: "What's harder for you: giving or receiving?" The answers came back almost identical. Giving is easy. Receiving doesn't always come naturally. People described it as a burden, a debt, an awkwardness, a thing they'd been taught they had to earn first. One person said, "It's safer not to want."
Most of us were trained to be *over-developed givers* and under-developed receivers, and we live the rest of our lives slightly off-balance because of it. The Relating Lab is a 105-minute group session to explore this topic, guided by a psychologist.
**Who this is for**
* You can give for hours. Receiving for five minutes feels strange.
* When someone gives you something, you feel like you owe them something back.
* You don't always know what you actually want.
* You notice yourself trying to be worthy of the good things in your life.
* You wish for more affection in your friendships without awkwardness.
* You suspect that the way you were taught about love and worth in childhood is still running quietly in the background.
**What we'll do**
* A guided meditation on a recent moment when receiving felt hard
* Paired work with a simple exercise that can change how you understand every interaction in your life.
* A closing sound bath where you receive together.
* A closing circle.
**What this is not**
This is not therapy. Not a workshop you'll have to perform at. Not a "share your trauma" circle. Just come as you are and give this topic the time it deserves.
*Your only task is to **receive**. Not to deserve it. Not to repay it. Not to make anything happen. Just let it land.*
**The practical bits**
Sunday 31 May, 4–5:45 pm. Calm Rooms, Monkstown. €27. Up to 15 seats. RSVP through this Meetup. Wear something comfortable that you can sit on the floor in. Bring a water bottle.
**About me**
I'm Olena. I'm a psychologist (PSI graduate member), doing a PhD in organisational psychology, with somatic and consent-based training on top. I run cacao ceremonies and cuddle therapy sessions in Dublin. The Relating Lab is a series of four events that I'll be running monthly through the summer. Each event is focused on a different quadrant of the Wheel of Consent. This is the entry point. Come and share this space with like-minded people.
**Everything is opt-in.** You can pass on any exercise without explaining why.
This event is an introduction to future workshops about giving, receiving, taking, and allowing. It's a safe space; the exercises might include some platonic touch (if you opt in). Every participant is invited to come with reverence for others in the group.
5k Run, we may increase the distance as the weeks progress.
IMPORTANT: If you RSVP a particular event, then ensure that you attend, as their may be other members relying on you for company on the run.
Transformers in Pratice
If you’ve worked with LLMs, you’ve probably run into slow inference, out-of-memory errors, or hallucinations you couldn’t explain. There’s no shortage of resources on how transformers work, but most of them either ask you to build one from scratch or get lost in theory that doesn’t connect to the problems you’re actually facing.
Transformers in Practice is different.
We will give a complete practical view of how transformers work, from how they generate text to what’s happening inside the model to how it all gets optimized to run on real hardware. Interactive visualizations throughout let you see key concepts in action and build intuition that actually sticks.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
* **Model Behavior:** You’ll learn how LLMs generate text through an autoregressive loop, selecting one token at a time from a probability distribution. You’ll see how sampling parameters like temperature shape the output, why hallucinations happen, and how techniques like RAG, constrained generation, and chain-of-thought reasoning all work within this same loop.
* **Model Architecture and Attention:** You’ll look inside the transformer to understand what attention is really doing, how positional encoding tracks token order, and how multiple layers and attention heads work together to turn an input sequence into a next-token prediction.
* **Scaling and Deploying:** You’ll learn why GPUs are well-suited for transformer inference and where the real bottlenecks are. You’ll build practical intuition for quantization, KV caching, flash attention, and speculative decoding, including the tradeoffs each one introuces for cost, speed, and output quality.
The minimum fee is to pay the venue and avoid no show and make this group of people sustainable in the long term
Zazen Meditation + Dharma talk or Kinhin
The meaning of the word zen is meditation, zazen means sitting meditation. In zazen practice we begin to know ourselves, and to go beyond the limits of our personal ego. Within our tradition zazen is referred to as shikantaza, not doing, letting go of thoughts, dropping off body and mind. This sitting meditation is the focus of our practice. Language limits our ability to communicate the true nature of zen; it is something that is better understood
through practice. We are open to everyone interested in learning about zen.
Intro workshop for newcomers is available at 5.30pm each Sunday. The dojo is a sacred place and it is important to be considerate of everyone. We have many people that travel to practise together once a week or once a month. So for that reason it is really essential that we all know the structure of the sitting practise (when to sit, how to do Kinhin, the different bell sounds and their meaning etc), to ensure a silent, safe and meaningful meditation. And it's also great to meet everyone before the sitting practise. And answer any questions you may have.
We have zafus and zabutons (mats and cushions) for all to sit on. Chairs are available too.
Comfortable clothing for sitting, black or neutral tones best.
We greatly appreciate a donation of €5 to cover costs if it's possible for you.
Please arrive 10min before start so 6ish (if you're not doing the intro workshop).
You are very welcome to our dojo!

Book summary:
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a twelve-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.

**Abstract**
Like it or not, AI agents are now capable of turning a quickly written paragraph of requirements into a pull request that is ready to be integrated into real-world production applications and it's now our responsibility to make sure AI doesn't go rogue and take down prod - or corrupt our data by misunderstanding the requirements or our existing schemas. In this session we'll explore strategies to protect our codebases through unit and integration testing, documentation, and code review along with additional ways of providing context and guard rails to our AI agents as they carry out the work we've assigned them to do. By the time we're done, you'll have a firm grasp of the problem and understand some helpful options for protecting your codebase from vibe coding mishaps getting YOLOed into prod.
