Bluegrass at Birchmere - Highlighting Music of Jerry Garcia's Old and In the Way
Music will be performed by Peter Rowan & The Sam Grisman Project
Peter Rowan & Sam Grisman are both rooted in early Grateful Dead history. I caught Jerry Garcia’s Old and In the Way in 1973. It was a helluva lot of fun! I have a nice collection of their works. This band will be reviving that wonderful vibe in at this concert.
Here's a nice sampling of the songs they will be playing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ljkdj8koUN4&list=RDEMeJAX6744RW1nzaI_4ajymQ&start_radio=1
Peter Rowan is an original OAITW member who has written a number of great songs that were played by that band. He writes in a genre of songwriting that I enjoy the most; that of story telling that evokes deep, and sometimes very humorous, feelings. In “Midnight Moonlight” the singer is wrestling with his own fate, while “Panama Red” is a hilarious metaphoric story of marijuana taking over a small town.
The first concert when I moved to Virginia was with Peter Rowan’s Mexican Airforce. They did a number of Rowan’s numbers and some great Latino tunes, as well. That was a real nice way to kick off my subsequent concert frenzy.
If you enjoy bluegrass music and/or fun music of any kind, pick up a ticket for the show (at the box office or from Ticketmaster) and we’ll meet there for a night of fun.
[https://www.birchmere.com/events/peter-rowan-sam-grisman-project-playing-music-from-old-in-the-way-and-more/](https://www.birchmere.com/events/peter-rowan-sam-grisman-project-playing-music-from-old-in-the-way-and-more/)
The Birchmere is General Admission, all the time. I get there early on show nights so that I can choose my own table. There are six seats at every table. If you want to join me at my table I will grab the table for up to six people. If it is more than six, I will try and grab another table. If it’s more than that, then we will have quite a party.
You can dine and/or imbibe before or during the concert. The food is pretty good. The Birchmere staff are the best.
Tickets are on sale right now. They are GA. To get a $5-$10 break, purchase your ticket at the box office on any evening that they are having a show. Those nights, the box office is open from 5 to 9. Check The Birchmere FAQ for full info.

Profs & Pints DC: The Search for Life Beyond Earth
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Search for Life Beyond Earth,”** with Måns Holmberg, postdoctoral researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute and part of a team of astronomers looking for chemical traces of life on distant exoplanets.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-ET](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-ET) .]
Are we alone in the universe?
While many of us have pondered that question, astronomer Måns Holmberg of Baltimore’s Space Telescope Science Institute is seriously focused on answering it. Last year he was part of a Cambridge-led team of astronomers who generated worldwide headlines by announcing that they had discovered potential evidence of a gas produced almost exclusively by life in the James Webb Space Telescope’s data from the atmosphere of a distant world.
Dr. Holmberg will talk about how the search for life elsewhere is being conducted and what strides are being made on that front. He’ll describe what it would take to confirm signs of life on such a world, what challenges remain, and how the next wave of observations could ultimately tip the scales.
Dr. Holmberg also will look at the role being played by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), how it uses infrared light to decode the chemical composition of strange atmospheres, and how it has left us closer than ever to answering the question of whether life exists elsewhere.
He’ll discuss astronomers’ growing interest in a new class of exoplanets known as “Hycean worlds”—ocean-covered planets with hydrogen-rich atmospheres that could be surprisingly hospitable to life. We’ll visit K2-18 b, a distant world around twice the size of Earth that orbits in the habitable zone of a cool red-dwarf star 120 light-years away, and discuss why it has become one of the most interesting exoplanets in the search for life.
Recent observations from JWST have revealed something extraordinary: the atmosphere of planet K2-18 b contains carbon-based molecules like methane and carbon dioxide and possibly even dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a gas that, on Earth, is almost exclusively produced by life. Dr. Holmberg will discuss what makes DMS a compelling (though not yet definitive) biosignature candidate.
You’ll emerge from the talk with a much richer appreciation of the immense possibilities out there among the stars. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM.
It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
