June Meetup: Exploring tuning systems
Join us on the **2nd of June** at our monthly **Audio Developer Meetup** where we will be hosting a **panel of speakers exploring different approaches to tuning** when developing tools for musicians. See below for details!
As always, there will be a chance to network over drinks and pizza. Anyone interested in Audio development is welcome!
Doors open at 18:00, talks start at 18:15.
Please note: Attendance is **strictly limited** to people who have RSVP'd
**Tuning Panel details:**
Many digital music-making tools are built from the ground up with the assumption that all music is based on a 12-note scale with pitches tuned like a piano. This can force musicians who draw from other backgrounds to adapt to this Western-classical ideal or exclude them from exploring certain creative avenues, with political, social and artistic consequences. This panel includes guest speakers with different musical and engineering backgrounds who will share the barriers they have encountered with existing tools and what doors the next generation of tools could open.
**Speakers:**
**John Kameel Farah** is a Palestinian-Canadian composer who combines elements of Baroque and Arabic music, improvisation and electronic soundscapes, to create music he calls "Arabic-Baroque-Futurism". In his concerts, Farah draws on themes of resistance, history and identity. Surrounding the piano with synthesizers and electronics, he weaves unfolding sonic tapestries in which looping drones morph into Baroque-style fugues and driving Arabic percussion.
**Morgan Sully** (US/DE) is a Berlin-based experimental musician descended from the great American portrait painter Thomas Sully and itinerant roots from Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean. Morgan’s current practice moves between live electronics, curation, and the thoughtful resynthesis of sonic heritage.
**Uygur Vural** is a Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist, cellist, sound artist, and storyteller from Թուրքիyե. His work moves between free improvisation, contemporary music, Middle Eastern musical traditions, and acoustic ecology, exploring the relationships between sound, memory, migration, and urban space. Drawing from both Anatolian musical cultures and experimental practices, he develops performances and listening experiences that challenge fixed ideas of tuning, musical systems, and cultural boundaries.
**Peter Kirn** is a Lebanese-American composer and music technologist who, for over twenty years, has written daily at CDM.link (create digital music) about music and music tech. He studied composition and musicology at the CUNY Graduate Center and has hosted workshops and interactive performance laboratories in various formats across the Americas, West and East Asia, and Europe, while generally confusing people by making techno, experimental, or ambient sounds on alternating days.
**Laurel Pardue** is a violinist and music technologist. She studied both engineering and music at MIT, leading to a PhD in music instrument design and learning at the UK's QMUL. She has designed and built several novel instruments, including the award winning Svampolin (Guthman, NIME), a hybrid acoustic and digital violin, and the Tabla Touch for Keda Instruments. She’s performed with various musicians including Sam Lee, Bang On A Can, Gamelan Galak Tika, and Mishaped Pearls with live appearances on UK BBC Radio, and German television. She currently writes software at Ableton AG and performs with percussionist Bex Burch and Gamelan Saptarvana.

Session 20: Memory
Hi!
Welcome to Thought Experiments in Pubs - Berlin edition, where you get to have deep conversations with people you've never met.
The topic will be "Memory". I'll post the questions that will guide us through that topic here on the day as a comment.
**Location:** [Atopia Kaffeehaus, Prenzlauer Allee 187, 10405 Berlin](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ukuup9CTrmedrB6f9)
\*Please consider that the locations we visit do not charge us for our booking, so in return, please make sure to show your appreciation by buying drinks or snacks.
* If you're signed up but can't make the event, please cancel so someone else can take your spot
\*Make sure you check the right address, there is a sister pub nearby and it's not that one ☝️
**The idea:**
A chance to meet and talk at a 'deeper' level, and skip the 'small talk'.
**How will it work?**
We will have a set of 'Thought Experiments', short, philosophical scenarios and questions, which will be discussed in groups. The conversation will flow freely, there are no strict rules, simply share and discuss your perspectives on the given topic. The thought experiments will be posted here ahead of the event.
**Who should come?**
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc.
**Do I need to bring anything?**
No! Just an open, inquisitive mind.
We will do 3 rounds of discussions. After the event, I would love to hear your feedback on the session.
The thought experiments we will discuss are around the theme of the day. Prompts will be posted here on the day of the event.
See you soon!
\- Dirk

DJ Workshop
### **DNA. Presents "DJ WORKSHOP"**
### **Curious about DJing and ready to try it Yourself?**
This beginner-friendly workshop is Your first real step behind the decks. In 90 minutes, DNA. Member CZECH STRINGS — a multi-genre DJ with 10+ years of experience — walks You through everything You need to know to make Your first mix. No prior knowledge of DJing, music theory, or equipment is required. Zero.
#### **What the workshop covers:**
The session starts with the essentials: what a DJ actually does, what their role is, and how it all comes together. From there, CZECH STRINGS explains the gear using the decks available at the spot as a live example, applicable to any DJ setup You might encounter in the future.
#### **You will learn the core technical skills needed for Your first transition:**
\* Beatmatching — how to align two tracks in tempo
\* Cueing — how to prepare the next track for a seamless entry
\* Track structure and phrasing — understanding how tracks are built so You know when to mix
The teaching happens live from behind the DJ decks. You can follow from Your seat or gather around and watch up close. CZECH STRINGS demonstrates everything on Electronic Music, but can switch to any other genre on request. The techniques taught apply to all rhythmic music.
A part of the session is dedicated to hands-on practice. You will get the chance to step up to the decks and try it Yourself.
#### **Do You need to bring anything?**
Nothing is required. If You'd like to bring Your own music on a USB stick, You're welcome to, but it will only work if the stick is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) / FAT32 and the tracks have been analysed in Rekordbox beforehand. If that means nothing to You right now, don't worry. There's plenty of music ready to go.
The atmosphere is supportive, focused, and hands-on. This workshop is for anyone curious about DJing who wants to understand the craft, touch real equipment, and leave with a solid first foundation.
#### **Start where You are. Learn the fundamentals. Find Your sound**.

Feel Good Friday: POWER BALLAD at the Gateway Film Center + SHAKE NO. 8!
Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving." The film continues John Carney’s “long run of success with yet another charmer” and “a sharp, hopeful crowd-pleaser that strikes the right notes!”
SUMMER OF ICE CREAM, VOL 2: SHAKE NO. 8! Ranked the #1 Ice Cream Shop in Columbus, this is a perfect early stop on our Summer of Ice Cream! Their menu uses made-from-scratch recipes in an array of traditional, specialty and vegan shakes, hot cocoa, crepes, waffle sticks, specialty coffee & espresso, and more! Their specialty shakes are as delicious as they are over-the-top and they offer an extensive vegan menu! You can check out their full menu here: [https://www.shakeno8.com/menu.php](https://www.shakeno8.com/menu.php)
PLAN: Please purchase your ticket for the 6:45pm showing and we’ll meet in the upstairs lobby between 6:25 and 6:35pm! Advance ticket purchase is advised for this opening night showing! Once you have yours, please list your seat number in the Comments section of this event. We'll head to nearby Shake No. 8 immediately following the show!
Should be a fun one, Dan
