Read & Reflect: A Social Reading Circle.
Shared Pages, Shared Insights.
📚 Do you love reading, but wish you had a structure and a community to share your insights with?
Join our small circle of curious minds (just 4 members per gathering) as we come together for an hour of focused reading—in the calm setting of a library or the cozy atmosphere of a café.
Here’s how it works:
First part: Quiet reading on your own—bring a book you’re exploring, whether it’s philosophy, history, psychology, literature, or anything meaningful to you.
Second part: We regroup and each person shares key takeaways, insights, or questions sparked by their reading. This sparks a structured yet free-flowing conversation around ideas, perspectives, and personal reflections.
Why join?
Add structure to your reading habit.
Discover new books, authors, and ideas through others’ choices.
Build real connections by sharing and listening deeply.
Socialize around something meaningful instead of small talk.

Jan Meetup: Normal People by Sally Rooney
Note: RSVPs for this meetup open when our last meetup ends.
For January, we will be reading Normal People by Sally Rooney. It was first published in 2018 and the hardcover version runs 273 pages.
The GoodReads blurb is
At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers - one they are determined to conceal.
A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years in college, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. Then, as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.
Sally Rooney brings her brilliant psychological acuity and perfectly spare prose to a story that explores the subtleties of class, the electricity of first love, and the complex entanglements of family and friendship.
Book comparison: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Northanger Abbey
For January we will be reading **Mexican Gothic** by Silvia Garcia-Moreno and comparing with Austen's **Northanger Abbey**. Feel free to bring light snacks and drinks in closed containers. We'll meet in our usual room at the Central Branch of the Howard County Library in Columbia and likely relocate to a restaurant nearby to socialize after the official discussion is over. We hope you can join us!
Here are some questions to guide your reading (thanks ChatGPT):
1. **How does each novel use classic Gothic elements (creepy houses, secrets, vulnerable heroines)?**
Did you feel the Gothic atmosphere was meant to scare you, make you think, or make you laugh in each case?
2. **How do Noemí and Catherine differ in how they respond to fear and uncertainty?**
What do their reactions tell us about their personalities and the worlds they live in?
3. **Imagination vs. reality is central to both books—how does this play out differently?**
In *Northanger Abbey*, Catherine often imagines danger where there is none; in *Mexican Gothic*, Noemí doubts danger that turns out to be very real. How did this reversal affect your reading experience?
4. **What role does the house play in each story?**
How did High Place and the Tilney estate shape the mood, power dynamics, and sense of threat (or misunderstanding)?
5. **How do the books portray control and authority, especially by older men?**
Compare General Tilney with the Doyle family—whose power felt more unsettling, and why?
6. **What did you notice about how each author is responding to the Gothic genre itself?**
*Northanger Abbey* pokes fun at Gothic novels, while *Mexican Gothic* reclaims and reshapes the genre. Which approach did you enjoy more, and why?

· Bottoms · by Emma Seligman @ Beatley Library
Oddball Cinema’s Thursday-evening shows this year will be devoted to movies about women; they’ll be the main characters, and many of the features are written and/or directed by women. In this movie, two dejected lesbian high-school students realize that they’re not getting dates due to their drab appearance and bland personalities; they’re regarded as the “bottoms” of the local social hierarchy. The pair have no attraction to each other but are drawn toward cheerleaders, gymnasts, and other cuties. A scheme to start an after-school women’s self-defense club seems like a good way to mix with other girls, but with no experience or training in martial arts, they invent some tall tales to convince the faculty they’d be competent organizers. One lie leads to another, and once the club is established, it quickly descends into chaos. The plot lurches awkwardly at times, but eventually it rushes headlong toward a truly grand finale.
■ Title — *Bottoms*
■ Director — Emma Seligman
■ Cast — Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz
■ Rated R for language and ridiculous violence

**Our January novel is: Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan**
**This month's featured novel is a 20th-century biographical fiction, coming-of-age, historical romance, women’s fiction, world literature, student biography, heartfelt, magic, and feel-good novel. The book is 311 pages in print and 7 hours and 8 minutes on audiobook.**
1950: Margaret Devonshire (Megs) is a seventeen-year-old student of mathematics and physics at Oxford University. When her beloved eight-year-old brother asks Megs if Narnia is real, logical Megs tells him it's just a book for children, and certainly not true. Homebound due to his illness, and remaining fixated on his favorite books, George presses her to ask the author of the recently released novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a question: "Where did Narnia come from?"
Despite her fear about approaching the famous author, who is a professor at her school, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with C. S. Lewis and his own brother Warnie, begging them for answers.
Rather than directly telling her where Narnia came from, Lewis encourages Megs to form her own conclusion as he shares the little-known stories from his own life that led to his inspiration. As she takes these stories home to George, the little boy travels farther in his imagination than he ever could in real life.
After holding so tightly to logic and reason, her brother's request leads Megs to absorb a more profound truth: "The way stories change us can't be explained. It can only be felt. Like love."

## **Broke to 8 Figures: Live Panel + Open Q&A with 3 Young Investors Who Built Real Wealth Through Real Estate**
A decade ago, none of them were “set.”
10 years ago, these three weren’t millionaires.
They weren’t influencers.
They were broke, doubting themselves and fighting to make their first deal work…just like a lot of people trying to get into real estate today.
Now, two of the Columbus Investors Club’s founders, **Tiffany and** **Josh High**, sit down with **Austin Rutherford**… a fellow Columbus native who went from parking cars as a valet to owning a **$30M+ real estate portfolio.**
Together, they’ve flipped and wholesaled **thousands of homes**, raised **millions in private money**, and built businesses that run without them in the day to day… creating both wealth and freedom before 35.
This isn’t a highlight reel. It’s a real conversation about what it actually takes to build something that lasts… the fears they had to face, the habits that changed everything, and the systems that got them there.
You’ll laugh, you’ll take notes, and you’ll walk away seeing what’s truly possible no matter where you’re starting from.
**What You’ll Learn**
* How three broke twenty-somethings built 7–8 figure real estate businesses
* The mindset shifts that separate wishful thinking from real wealth
* How to raise private money even if you’ve never done a deal
* What’s working right now in flipping, wholesaling, and building a portfolio
* How to create financial and time freedom through systems and people
**Open Q&A - Ask Them Anything About**
* Raising private money with confidence
* Finding and structuring profitable deals
* Getting past fear, self-doubt, or “I’m not ready yet”
* Scaling your business without burning out
* Building a team that actually performs
**Who You’ll Hear From**
**Austin Rutherford** – From valet to a $30M+ rental portfolio. He has flipped and wholesaled hundreds of houses alongside his rental portfolio and recently got into commercial deals.
**Tiffany & Josh High** – Founders of **Heels Homes** and **Results Driven REI**. They’ve built multiple 7- and 8-figure companies, including a fully virtual real estate operation closing 250+ deals a year. Through Results Driven REI, they help experienced investors install the people, processes, and infrastructure needed to build a truly self-managing company.
**Event Details**
**Location:** *To Follow*
**Date & Time:** January 29th, 6–8 PM (Doors open at 5:30)
