Benefits of Nordic Walking:
The fitness and health benefits of Nordic Walking are significantly greater than regular walking, trekking or even jogging, with scientific research from Europe and the USA proving that Nordic Walking:
Activates 90% of the body's muscles
Burns up to 46% more calories than regular walking
Increases aerobic effect by up to 25% compared to regular walking
Decreases load and strain on the lower body
Tones upper arms, shoulders and back muscles
Improves lateral mobility of the spine
Develops core stability and strength
Promotes an upright posture
These benefits are achieved through the use of specially designed poles and a properly learned and performed Nordic Walking technique, whereby the poles are used as a resistance tool to engage the upper body. The result is a low impact, high results, total body exercise.
As a low impact walking exercise, Nordic Walking is something that can be done and enjoyed individually or as a group activity, anywhere a person can normally walk.

Acting for Confidence - Taster Evening
**Acting for Confidence - Taster Session**
**Monday 20th April**
If you’ve been wanting to feel more confident speaking up, meeting new people, or simply being yourself in front of others, this taster session is the perfect place to start.
This isn’t about becoming an actor. It’s about discovering your voice, building confidence, and doing it alongside a group of likeminded people who are all here for the same reason — to grow, connect, and have fun.
**What to expect:**
* A relaxed, friendly session led by Stage & the City
* Simple acting and confidence‑building exercises (no experience needed)
* A chance to meet others who want to improve their communication and self‑belief
* A supportive environment where everyone starts at the same level
Most people who join us say they were nervous walking in… and completely energised walking out.
**Why we're running this taster**
Our 10‑week Acting for Confidence course is extremely popular, and as the new term begins we’re offering a limited number of taster places so you can try it out before committing.
If you’ve ever thought:
* “I wish I could speak up without overthinking”
* “I want to feel more confident socially”
* “I’d love to meet new people who are on the same journey”
…then this session is for you.
**Booking**
To find out more and guarantee your place at the Taster Day for just £10, or even on the course, please book your ticket here: [Drama Classes | London | Stage & the City](https://www.afperformingarts.com/stage-and-the-city/classes/acting-for-confidence-mondays)
Grove Park to Petts Wood
Dear all, this is an interesting walk with plenty to see, and well worth doing.
We will meet at 10.45 am at Grove Park Station, and then walk from there to the Ringway Centre as image above.
{You can get to Grove Park Station by train from Cannon Street, Charing Cross, London Bridge and Waterloo East.}
My friend is making a dairy and gluten free cake and with a hot drink will charge only £3.
After our hot drink and cake we will make our way to Chinbrook Meadows, then through woodland in Elmstead Woods.
Our walk will then take us past 2 railway stations, Elmstead Woods, then Chislehurst, along more woodland and river trails and across three railway bridges until we reach Petts Wood, where our walk will end. Walking distance 6 miles.
Lunch will be at The Sovereign of The Seas, a Wetherspoons pub, or you can bring our own.
From Petts Wood Station you can get trains to Charing Cross,Waterloo East, London Bridge & Victoria stations.
Please note: £7 Meetup fee required - please have the right change.
In view of some upward slopes and the many steps at the railway bridges, if you have a knee problem or walk slowly, this walk may not be for you.
If you need any more information, please ring or text Paul on 07530 675739 – note, this is not a smart phone.

INTRO TO JAPANESE JOINTS
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-japanese-joints-5-evenings/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-japanese-joints-5-evenings/)
⋆⋆⋆
**Intro to Japanese Joints**
If you are intrigued by the precision and elegance of Japanese joinery, we hope you will join us for six sessions of learning how to produce Japanese joints.
Using unique and creative ways to avoid using screws, nails, and glue, this art is passed down from master to apprentice. Even with the advent of power tools, the craft is still practised by hand as a sign of respect towards their heritage, culture, and traditions.
Japanese woodworking is all about principle, discipline, and accuracy. The lack of power tools is a testament to the practice put into mastering the craft.
Experienced woodworker Auram Desforges is a Japanese joinery enthusiast. He will guide you through the Japanese tools and techniques to make several wood joints.
You will learn which tools to use, and how to measure and cut with accuracy so that you can attempt any joint design in the future. Expect a calm workshop with lots of concentration.
This course is not project-based but you will take home as many joints as you have crafted.
Auram teaches other classes at the centre: Kumiko coasters, Kumiko lamp, Make a chair
HARD WOOD TREASURE BOX
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hard-wood-treasure-box-15/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hard-wood-treasure-box-15/)
**⋆⋆⋆**
This is a content rich three-day course in a very small class size which includes:
* **Supervised use of woodwork machinery**. **(surface planer thicknesser, panel saw, table router, hand router and bandsaw.)**
* **Learning how to use jigs and rods**.
* **Solid wood carcass construction.**
From a technical drawing and a length of timber to the final sanding of the completed box, expert furniture maker and tutor, Marcin Waszak will guide each learner through all the steps needed to create this hardwood treasure box. The box measures 330mm x 304mm x 180mm and can be used to store lots of special things and perhaps become an heirloom!
The beautiful hardwood and veneers used for this project has been sourced and prepared from a sustainable woodyard. The course begins by explaining how to stay safe while using our professional and powerful woodworking machines. Marcin will talk you through the materials and tools you will be using and let you practice before beginning the project. We have created a cutting list so that each person can learn how to process the wood and begin making very quickly.
If you hanker to use some big machines and learn how to use jigs and to work accurately from plans, this is a great course for you.
**Steps to making your own Treasure Box:**
1. Student introductions, inspirations and knowledge.
2. Introduction to the project.
3. Health and Safety.
4. Understanding the materials and tools we will be using in this course (wood technology, proper usage of the tools, jigs).
5. Practice on how to use the tools and jigs in the workshop.
6. Cutting list.
7. Making.
Marcin says:
‘I will approach the sessions with a solid introduction not only to Health and Safety but to give an understanding of materials and tools. I believe it’s important to understand the nature of different types of wood and how it reacts (i.e. depending on variety, cut or thickness) when handling it, glueing or using different tools. There will be a great focus on how to use tools and machinery in the correct way for best results.
We will be starting from technical drawing explanation and introduction to the material and the design itself. I will love to know people’s backgrounds before we start the session so everyone will feel more comfortable and confident to work as a team.
I will have prepared a cutting list to make things easier and so we can start making (and having fun) as soon as possible.
I would like to make the sessions inclusive and provide a safe space for everyone. I always take people’s abilities into account and endeavour to be there for students that want to share their struggles in order to make the making experience something they can enjoy.’
