Wild at Heart | Trekking Across West Papua, Indonesia
Wild at Heart | Trekking Across West Papua, Indonesia
If you’re looking for an alternative and truly authentic adventure, you’ve just come to the right place. Papua is often described as the **final frontier of travel, a land where wilderness still rules** and where the Himalayas, by comparison, could feel like a luxury holiday. This journey combines jungle trekking with immersive encounters among stone age tribes, offering not just an expedition but the chance to live among people who preserve traditions thousands of years old. [https://vimeo.com/206644919](https://vimeo.com/206644919) [https://vimeo.com/210776442](https://vimeo.com/210776442) Papua lies **between Australia and the equator in the vast Pacific Ocean**, approximately 10,600 km from Dubai. It forms the easternmost part of the Indonesian archipelago and is the second largest island in the world. Remote, rugged, and breathtaking, Papua remains one of the most isolated places on Earth. **Our exploration takes us to the Baliem Valley, a lush gorge** approximately 70 km long and 20 km wide, resting at 1,800 m above sea level and surrounded by peaks rising up to 4,500 m. Remarkably, this valley was unknown to the outside world until the 1940s, when aerial surveys revealed its hidden communities. **Nestled in the Jayawijaya Mountains, the Baliem Valley is a vibrant patchwork of rivers, forests, and farmland**. It has been inhabited for over 9,000 years and is home to more than 400 distinct tribes, including the renowned Dani, Yali, and Lani people. These tribes still maintain their ancestral way of life, living in round thatched huts called honai, cultivating sweet potatoes and pigs, and practicing rituals that seem to leap directly from the pages of prehistory. Visitors often witness customs that are both fascinating and deeply symbolic such as tribal war dance performed to resolve disputes or celebrate victories. Men adorned with penis gourds (koteka) and women wearing grass skirts, reflecting a heritage untouched by modern fashion. Body ornaments, scarification, and age-old rites still mark important stages of life. **For about a week, we will live their life:** trekking between villages, sleeping in tribal houses, sharing meals, and discovering an entirely different rhythm of existence. **This is not a packaged holiday, it’s an immersion into one of the last authentic adventures on Earth.** Papua challenges and quickly rewards you. It is raw, untamed, and profoundly human. **Dare only if you are wild at heart!** **Day 01 // Wamena - Sogokmo - Kilise Village (5 hrs trek)** Arrival at Wamena Airport, meet our team and enjoy a short refreshment. Transfer by car (approx. 40 minutes) to Sogokmo, the starting point of the trek. The trail leads through plantations and lush forested valleys, offering the first encounter with the Dani tribe’s traditional lifestyle. Arrive at Kilise village in the afternoon. Explore the community while our cook prepares dinner. Overnight: Tribal house in Kilise village. **Day 02 // Kilise - Ibiroma - Syokosimo (6 hrs trek)** After breakfast, descend a steep trail to a traditional hanging bridge across the Baliem River. The path is narrow and slippery, with highlights including a small waterfall stop for refreshment and lunch served by the cook. Continue trekking through challenging terrain and cross another rustic bridge before reaching Syokosimo village. Overnight: Tribal house in Syokosimo village. **Day 03 // Syokosimo - Hitugi (4 hrs trek)** Today’s hike is shorter and more relaxed (about 4 hours). The route passes scenic landscapes and small villages before reaching Hitugi village by noon. Spend the afternoon discovering local life and traditions. Overnight: Tribal house in Hitugi village. **Day 04 // Hitugi - Kurima - Wamena (4 hrs trek + transfer)** After breakfast, begin the return trek toward Sogokmo via Kurima village. Though this is the longest walk of the trip, the terrain is relatively gentle. Upon arrival at Sogokmo, transfer back to Wamena by car. Overnight: hotel in Wamena. **Day 05 // Yuarima - Obia War Dance - Wamena** Breakfast at the hotel, then visit Obia village, home to the Dani tribe, where traditions such as the penis gourd, grass skirts, and honai (round houses) are still preserved. Witness a staged tribal war dance, an ancient cultural expression once triggered by disputes over women or land. After the performance, experience a traditional stone-cooking feast that may last up to 3 hours. Continue to Anemoigi and Sumpaima villages to see a **250-year-old mummy** in a traditional house. End the day with a short visit to a natural limestone cave at Wosilimo village. Overnight: hotel in Wamena. **Day 06 // Wamena - Jayapura - Susuna Kissi Beach** Morning flight to Jayapura, followed by a 2-hour drive to the secluded Susuna Kissi Beach. Spend the day exploring pristine shores, turquoise waters, and postcard-worthy scenery. Overnight: hotel in Jayapura. **Day 07 // Jayapura - Jakarta** After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your 09:00 flight to Jakarta. **Level of difficulty:** Moderate - this is a travel in the area with limited facilities. **Activities:** trekking, encounter indigenous tribes. **Duration:** 7 days * Trip starts at Jakarta CGK domestic terminal DEC 27 at 22:30 (flight at 00:45) * Trip ends at Jakarta CGK domestic terminal on JAN 03 at 12:15 We recommend minimum of 4 hrs minimum layover between international flights. **Accommodation & meals:** included - hotels (double sharing) and tribal houses. **Basic facilities ahead.** **Portering:** included upto 10kg. **Requirements:** daypack, weatherproof clothes, trekking shoes, head torch, hat, sunscreen, sleeping bag, mattress. **Cost:** **10300 AED including 4 local flights**, excl. flight to Jakarta (approx. 3400 AED). **Cost valid until DEC 15.** **Specifically excluded:** * visa, * international flights to JAKARTA - you can chose any flight at your convenience, * restaurant meals (outside trek), * entrance fees - if any. * extra luggage allowance on local flights above 10kg (approx. 3 USD per extra kg). Tagine with Tuaregs | NYE Journey Across Southern and Coastal Algeria
Tagine with Tuaregs | NYE Journey Across Southern and Coastal Algeria
The **largest country in Africa**, imposing Algeria covers an area of almost two and a half million square kilometers. From the green and mountainous Mediterranean coast, where most of its population lives, Algeria sweeps southward into the heart of the Sahara Desert. **Nearly 90% of Algeria is uninhabited**, with most of the land being in the Sahara, a hot, dry and unforgiving region covering 80% of the country. As a **gateway to North Africa’s mountains, beaches and deserts, Algeria is a melting pot of cultures** – having seen, over millennia, the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, French and even pirates pass through it. Algeria’s history, like most of North Africa, is marked by warring tribes, Islamisation and the subsequent colonisation by European powers. The country was occupied by France for 132 years until 1962, when a brutal bloodbath saw it finally gain independence, only for the Algeria to plunge into civil war in the 1990s. Though still scarred by the unrest of the past, today Algeria one of the most developed countries in Africa, and has **much to offer travelers, from magical summers on the Mediterranean coast to a vast desert, imposing Roman ruins and prehistoric art** – all infused with the depth of Arabic and Bedouin culture. In the harsh and unforgiving Sahara, the everchanging desert terrain is a testament to the **eternal transformation of this region by the elements**. Ever so slowly, **rocks are whittled** **into sculptures of dramatic and extraordinary beauty**. The result is a near-indescribable landscape of vivid red dunes, formidable rock formations and twisting canyons that hide crystal-clear watering holes. Aside from incredible beauty, there is a rich, fascinating and ancient history here, too, going back to the early days of humanity. **Unique, UNESCO-listed archaeological sites** house the remains of hominids and Homo Sapiens more than two million years old, and the concentration of **cave paintings and engravings** essentially make the area an open-air museum. In this trip, we go off the beaten path to capture Algeria’s two extremes, taking in the sparkling Mediterranean coast as well as the breathtaking desert dunes. We’ll move from the ancient port city of Béjaïa to the endless desert vistas of Djanet, discovering majestic landscapes, fascinating history, and age-old Berber traditions along the way. **Let’s go!** **Day 1 // Algiers & Flight to Tamanrasset** Arrival in Algiers, immigration, coffee and head straight to the city. First we head up to the city's heights to discover **Makam Echahid, a monument in memory of Algerian fighters** who fell for the liberation of the country. Dominating the city from a height of 92 meters, it is composed of three concrete palm trees joined together, symbolizing the country’s three revolutions. After lunch in the city center, we’ll **explore the Kasbah**, meeting some of its artisans. We’ll then **tour the city’s major landmarks**, including Sidi Ramdane Mosque, the Bir Chebana fountain, Princess Khedaoudj Palace, Mustapha Pasha Palace, the fishing district, the New Mosque, Church of the Sacred Heart, the famous Grande Poste, Basilica of Our Lady of Africa and more. We’ll have dinner near the airport, then catch our domestic flight to Tamanrasset. Arrival, transfer to our camp for overnight. **Day 2 // Hoggar and Assekrem** Early departure for a full-day excursion to the heart of the Hoggar Mountains. Visit Assekrem, the highest point of the region, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Atakor Mountains, and the Hermitage of Father de Foucauld, built in 1910. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the Afilal guelta, then hike to the summit. Overnight bivouac at the mountain refuge. **Day 3 //** **Tagmart** Wake up early to witness the spectacular sunrise from the plateau. After breakfast, set out for an excursion to the rock art site of Tagmart, where ancient engravings depict early human life and the origins of calligraphy. Return to Tamanrasset by late afternoon for a city tour of this vibrant capital of the Ahaggar region. Dinner and overnight stay in a local guesthouse (gîte). **Day 4 // Tamanrasset- Algiers – Béjaïa** Early start this morning, as we fly from Tamanrasset to Algiers, where we’ll connect for a flight to **the port city of Béjaïa, located on one of the most beautiful bays of the Mediterranean coast** and backdropped by the Babors mountain range. Béjaïa has a deep history, standing on the site of the ancient Carthaginian city of Saldae, and occupied over the millennia by the Romans, Vandals, Spanish and Ottomans. For centuries, it was also a stronghold of the Barbary pirates who roamed the North African coast. After checking into the hotel, we’ll take a city tour, discovering monuments such as the 12th century casbah, rebuilt by the Spaniards when the city was taken in 1510, and historic Bab El Fouka fort. **In the evening celebration of NYE Algerian style!** **Day 5 // Béjaïa** In the morning, we’ll make our way into **Gouraya National Park, a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve**, trekking to the summit of Yemma Gouraya at an altitude of 660 meters. The mountain is the burial place of its namesake, and the city's patron saint, Yemma Gouraya. At the top we’ll find a fort built by the Spanish in the 16th century, and enjoy sweeping views over the area and coastline. We’ll return to town to refuel with some lunch, then head back to the park to for a **hike to Pic des Singes, or Peak of the Monkeys**, located in the Cap Carbon area very near to the coast. We’ll ascend 430 meters to this habitat for the endangered Barbary macaque, and hopefully enjoy some close encounters with these cute and mischievous creatures – the only African primate that survives north of the Sahara Desert. **Day 6 // Coastal Drive & Departure** This morning we’ll make our way back to Algiers along the beautiful Mediterranean coast, making stops at **the port towns of Azzefoune and Tigzirt**, where Roman ruins have weathered the elements and stood the test of time. We’ll have lunch near the airport in Algiers then catch our mid-afternoon flight. **Level of Difficulty:** Easy & relaxing, available to everyone. **Duration:** 6 days **Activities:** Off roading, desert and cliff trekking, cultural immersion, camping, sightseeing, discovering ancient cities. **Accommodation and meals:** Camping + hotel (double sharing). 3 days bivouac meals in the desert included, restaurant meals excluded. **Cost: AED 7650 excl. international flights.** Domestic flights included. Cost valid until DEC 18. **Flights:** direct Emirates approx. 3600 AED. **Visa:** visa on arrival arrangements included, visa fee \~145 EUR payable on arrival. **Specifically excluded:** insurance, visa on arrival fee, restaurant meals.
