In April, we'll be hosted again by [MPB](https://www.mpb.com/de-de?utm_source=luma), the second-hand market for camera and video equipment, running good ol' Django. Be sure to chat to them while you sample their food and drinks.
This month, like last, we'll have a speaker from within our own community, **Sofia Fischer**, Backend Developer at Kraken Technologies. The title of her talk is: "**How complex is my function?**".
This talk will give an overview of complexity metrics in computer science, software engineering, and linguistics to show many different ways in which a function may be complex. Based on the Django Framework repo, I will show how a project can be analysed with different complexity metrics.
As always, please make use of the **lightning talks** and talk about anything you like: a problem that you'd like help with, a thing you've built, or a hobby you like. Doesn't have to be Django, doesn't even have to be tech!
**18:30 Doors open**
**19:00 Main talk by Sofia Fischer**
**19:30 Lightning talks**
**19:45 Get eatin'**
This event is governed by the **[Berlin code of conduct](https://berlincodeofconduct.org/de/?utm_source=luma).** We want this to be a safe space for all. Any questions and concerns can always be directed towards the organizers Lara Krämer ([lara.softwareengineer@gmail.com](mailto:lara.softwareengineer@gmail.com)) and Markus Binsteiner ([markus@frkl.dev](mailto:markus@frkl.dev)) before, at and after the event.
**Accessibility information:** The main entrance can be accessed via stairs or a ramp. The front door is a bit heavy and must be opened manually when closed. An elevator is available to take you up to the fifth floor. Once you reach the office door, please ring the bell; when you hear a sound, turn the handle two full turns to the right to enter, or somebody can come and open the door. If you need any assistance, feel free to reach out—we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Berlindroid April Meetup
Android, the one mystery left to be solved, by developers all around the world. Let us make a dent into the unknown by meeting, talking, discussing, drinking and celebrating what is the mobile operating system Android, developer edition.
To start our tourney today, we got
Siarhei Krupenich: Android Is Not Just Mobile: Lessons from TV, Auto, and WearAndroid is more than a mobile platform. This talk explores how development differs across Android TV, Android Auto, and Wear OS, focusing on platform-specific constraints, interaction models, and architectural trade-offs. Based on real-world experience, the session highlights practical lessons that go beyond traditional smartphone development.
Following a quick break we'll have our second talk:
Dirk Jäckel: From Cloud to Edge: Practical On-Device LLM Integration on AndroidThe assumption that LLM inference requires cloud infrastructure is increasingly outdated. This talk examines the current state of local language models on Android, covering model availability (including Liquid AI’s models and Google’s Gemini Nano), hardware constraints, and developer APIs. As a hands-on case study, we present an Android application leveraging Gemini Nano for on-device auto-tagging — demonstrating how to integrate MediaPipe / ML Kit-based inference into a production workflow.
And now it is your turn, please RSVP to this meetup, tell your friends and foes about it and finally enjoy some drinks on Hubraum, Techincubator of Deutsche Telekom

Linguistics Events This Week
Discover what is happening in the next few days
Berlin Sprachcafé. Learn and practise German easily (A1-A2)
The Language Café is primarily aimed at people who are struggling with their mental health which can make it hard to go to regular courses. We want to create a safe space for everyone to learn and practise without pressure. Everyone is welcome! Please try to be on time so we can all get started together :)
We mainly practise on a beginner/lower intermediate level and adapt to everyone's prior level of German.
The Language Café will focus on teaching you the most important words and phrases and basic grammar in German. The content of the course is adapted to real life. (everyday life in Germany, dealing with authorities, etc.) We will cover different topics every week and you can join us anytime, since the topics do not necessarily build on each other.
The Sprachcafé is for free.
\*If you cannot make it please cancel your participation so someone else from the waiting list can join, thank you!\*

💬Neurodivergent Language Meetup: German (Conversation)
Welcome! This meetup is for neurodivergent people (ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, OCD, etc.) who are learning German and want a low-pressure, structured space to practice speaking.
**Logistics:**
* 📍Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5weyJLA7EPgscxPY7 (Gleisdreieck Park near Tor Eins cafe)
* 🎧 Bring sensory management tools (headphones, stim toys, sunglasses, etc)
* A blanket or towel to sit on
* Water and a snack
* (Optional) A notebook if you like writing things down
**How it works:**
🗣️ **Level-based small groups**
When we start, we’ll quickly split into groups based on your self-assessed level (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).
→ **Max. 4 people per group** to keep sensory load low and speaking time fair.
⏲️ **Organizers group check**
The organizers will come around from time to time to each group and ask if you want to stay in your current group or move to a different level—either higher or lower— or if you’d like to talk in different group. We’ll help you move.
No pressure. No questions asked.
🚫 No pressure to speak every round. Just listening is fine.
🃏 **Conversation cards & prompts**
Each group gets a set of prompt cards (simple questions, situational tasks, or grammar challenges appropriate for that level). You can follow the cards or go off-script — whatever feels right that moment.
Let’s practice German in a way that actually works for our brains. ✨
Svensk-Tyskt Mingel i Berlin (OBS! Söndag) #115
Hej allihopa 😀!

Sprach-CaféIN: German Language Café in Spandau
Hello friends! We are the team of CaféIN, an inclusive café in Spandau, inviting you to our German language café - Sprach-CaféIN! 😎
With our language café, we aim to create a safe space for everyone to practice real German, without boring grammar exercises and books, but over coffee, conversations and new encounters :)
Every person will be warmly welcome at our Sprach-CaféIN, regardless of background and origin. We are happy to see each and everyone of YOU! Our events are not about politics, as we aim to build bridges and bring people together through language and culture.
Participation is free, but every participant is **required** to order at least one drink or snack at the café. This helps us support CaféIN and keep this special place alive.
Let's Meet Up and Practice Languages
(Inside event) Are you learning a language but can't find people to practice with? Do you enjoy helping people speak your native language? If so, meet with us to make friends and have some good conversations.
We begin by sharing the languages we speak fluently and the ones we are learning. Then we split into groups and speak! You can switch groups as often as you'd like. The goal is to speak about interesting, thought-provoking topics - not just the typical introductions we usually make.
At our last meetups we spoke: German, Ukranian, English, French, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Turkish, Polish, Swedish, Arabic, Norwegian, Icelandic, and Dutch. Can you help us make this list bigger? We hope to see you there and welcome ANY and ALL languages. (However, we cannot guarantee we will have a speaking partner for all languages).
Looking forward to see you all! 😁

Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
When judging morality, should we prioritize **intentions/duty** or **outcomes/results**? It introduces two influential philosophers as representatives of these approaches.
* **Immanuel Kant (deontology):** An action is moral when it is done from **duty** and follows rational, universal principles (the **categorical imperative**). Certain acts—like lying—are wrong regardless of the consequences; you can’t do a wrong thing for a right reason.
* **John Stuart Mill (utilitarian consequentialism):** The morality of an action is determined by its **effects**, specifically how much **happiness/well-being** it produces. Mill argues that some pleasures are “higher” than others, and that good intentions don’t redeem harmful outcomes.
## Discussion Questions
1. **The lying dilemma:** A murderer comes to your door and asks if your friend is hiding inside. Kant would say you must not lie.
2. **Can good intentions rescue a bad outcome?**
3. **The organ harvest problem:** A surgeon has five patients dying of organ failure and one healthy patient in for a checkup. Killing the one to harvest organs would save five lives, and the math works out for the utilitarian. Why does this feel so deeply wrong? Is that feeling a point in Kant's favor, or just a bias we should overcome?
4. **Do rules need exceptions?** Kant insists moral rules must be universal, with no exceptions. But most of us can imagine extreme scenarios where any rule seems like it should bend. Does the need for exceptions fatally undermine deontology, or is the strength of the system precisely that it refuses to bend?
5. **Who gets to calculate the consequences?** Utilitarianism asks us to maximize good outcomes, but we're notoriously bad at predicting consequences. If we can't reliably know the results of our actions, is it practical to base our entire moral system on outcomes? Does this uncertainty push us back toward rules and principles?
6. **Everyday morality:** Think about a real moral decision you've made recently, even a small one. Did you reason more like a Kantian (what's the right thing to do in principle?) or more like a utilitarian (what will produce the best result?)? Do most people naturally lean one way?
7. **Justice vs. the greater good:** A town can prevent a deadly plague by sacrificing one innocent person. The greater good is clearly served. But is it just? Can an action be morally right and deeply unjust at the same time?
8. **The big synthesis question:** Are these two systems actually opposed, or do they often arrive at the same answers by different paths? Is it possible that we need both: rules to guide us in the moment and consequences to evaluate systems and policies over time?
