Facilitator Studio: Tetrominos yours, where learning learns back.
**In this experiential learning workshop**, Ralph invites you to **explore the way you think you learn - both consciously and unconsciously.** Through a deceptively simple hands-on activity with "Tetrominos", you’ll uncover what motivates your learning, how you respond to challenge, and how your presence shifts when learning becomes a group experience.
Expect insights you didn’t anticipate, patterns you didn’t know you carried, and a fresh lens on how learning actually emerges between people.
Special request:
**If you can, please bring a book that taught you something important.**
Art and morals
Art moves us, inspires us, entertains us, and sometimes divides us. But what happens when the people behind the art become controversial? When an artist’s words, actions, or beliefs clash with our own values, does that change how we experience their work?
In this debate, we’ll explore the uneasy relationship between creative work and its creator. Should art be judged on its own merits, or does consuming it also mean endorsing the person behind it? Where do we draw the line between appreciation, accountability, and personal values? Including in, but not limited to, the #MeToo context…
As always, bring your opinions, your doubts, and your willingness to listen — this debate is about questioning assumptions, exploring grey areas, and engaging respectfully with different perspectives.
_⚠️ Trigger warning:_
_This debate may touch on sensitive topics, including cases of sexual assault. We aim to keep the discussion thoughtful, respectful, and focused on ideas rather than individuals. We have zero tolerance for harmful, dismissive, or disrespectful language. Please take care of yourself, and feel free to step out or reach out to the organisers at any point if you need support.__
This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into four teams of two.
Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience.
⚠️ Disclaimer:
We aim for debates that are respectful, constructive, and welcoming.
• Respect ideas and people: Listen actively, stay quiet while others speak, and debate arguments, not identities or beliefs.
• Be concise and civil: Keep questions short and relevant; avoid hostility, hate speech, or discrimination.
• Respect boundaries and time: No unwanted advances or suggestive behavior; arrive on time to avoid disrupting the debate.
• Follow moderators: They guide the discussion and ensure fairness.
Looking forward to seeing you there 😊

* **Location**
We have two locations:

Wednesday Sessions:
At Brussels Beer Poject
Rue Antoine Dansaert 188, 1000 Bruxelles
* **Participation (Attendee list)**
The session is limited to **12 attendees**. This ensures the session is manageable and everybody gets enough chances to participate.
Therefore, only the people on the "attendee list" can participate in the session.
**Waiting list**: People on the waiting list should keep an eye on the updates in case someone from the attendees' list drops and you get their spot. It's important for the people on the waiting list also to update their RSVP status if they already know they won't be joining the session.

* Emergencies aside, please update your RSVP status on time. Canceling at the last minute or just 1 hour before isn't helpful.
* If we see a pattern from someone not showing up after confirming or last-minute cancellations, we reserve the right to prohibit session access.
* Please write a comment if you cancel and your spot becomes available. With this, others will get an extra notification.
**Improv Session Format**
The session is held in English.
The session has three sections: Warm-up, Scene games, and Cool down.
**Warmup:** Quick group games are played to break the ice and get the creative juices flowing.
**Scenes:** Then we move on to scene games. These are mostly from short-form improv, which can include different games with various gimmicks, like story building, character work, guessing, etc
**Cool down:** One or two short group games to end the session. The rules are explained by the moderator before each game.
There is no obligation to participate in games you are uncomfortable with.
There can be feedback after a game is played. This is so we learn from each other and gain skills and insights.
**Tip**: If you are new, pay attention to the regular players when they are performing and notice small details, like how a stage is cleared before a scene, how to enter a scene, and how to collaborate with each other.
* **Who is it for?**
Anyone interested in improv! We accept participants at all levels, beginners and advanced.
This is a great place to start if you are new to improv. The basics will be explained. We only require the "Yes, and...!" spirit!
If you are an advanced player and have ideas and games to share and work on, please do let us know.
We look forward to welcoming you and doing improv!

Don’t Think of an Elephant! by George Lakoff
📚 **Book Club Invitation: *Don’t Think of an Elephant!* by George Lakoff**
Hello critical thinkers, language lovers, and curious minds,
This January, we turn our attention to George Lakoff’s *Don’t Think of an Elephant!* — a short but powerful book about how language shapes thought, politics, and public debate in ways we often don’t notice.
Lakoff shows that facts alone rarely change minds. What really matters are *frames*: the mental structures that shape how we see the world. Once you notice them, you start seeing them everywhere — in politics, media, education, and everyday conversations.
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering:
* “Why do some arguments feel persuasive even when the facts are weak?”
* “How does language quietly steer public opinion?”
* “Can we talk across divides if we don’t share the same frames?”
…then this book will give you plenty to think (and talk) about.
📅 **Date:** Saturday, 24 January
⏰ **Time:** 11:30
📍 **Venue:** Carpe Diem, Avenue de Tervuren 13, 1040 Brussels
Expect a lively and accessible discussion about language, power, political storytelling, and how ideas spread — all in a relaxed setting with good coffee and thoughtful company.
As usual, those who wish can stay on for lunch afterward and continue the conversation informally.

Saturday (!) coffee morning
**International House Leuven** organizes a coffee morning for those of you who like to chat and meet some friendly (new) faces. It's also a good place to ask questions, get answers and find out about what’s happening in Leuven. Our coffee morning is what you make it. So pop in and out whenever you like, see who is there, and say hi!
Other than meeting on Friday mornings every two weeks at the IHL house, for this edition we will meet on a **Saturday every two weeks**, so that those who work during the week have a chance to come!
Who's "we"? Well it varies a bit, but this time it will be volunteers from the IH, Zeba and/or Georgi!
The practicalities:
\- the coffee morning goes for 2 hours\, for the exact time check the event details\. Feel free to pop in and out at any point\, no need to stay the entire time if that doesn't suit your own timing\.
\- The location is stated in the event details\. Any changes will be communicated via MeetUp and the WhatsApp group on the day of\.\.\.\.
\- ask the event volunteer at the event to be added to the Whatsapp group for future updates
\- We will **limit the group size** because the cafe has limited seating, so please register so we know how many people are coming (and please respect your reservation, AKA cancel if you can no longer come :) ) Be aware that we cannot make a group reservation, so we may have to split up between a few tables.
Hope to see you at this special coffee morning weekend edition!
Cinema Flagey : Hamnet
**Cinema Flagey : Hamnet**
24/01 @ 18h50
**Toronto film festival: The two stars are knockouts in Chloé Zhao’s poignant adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel with a stirring tearjerker ending**
Maggie O’Farrell’s lauded 2020 novel Hamnet is a dense and lyrical imagining of the lives of William Shakespeare’s family, full of interior thought and lush descriptions of the physical world. It would seem, upon reading, near impossible to adapt into a film. Or, at least, a film worthy of O’Farrell’s so finely woven sensory spell. Film-maker Chloé Zhao has attempted to do so anyway, and the result is a stately, occasionally lugubrious drama whose closing minutes are among the most poignant in recent memory.
Zhao is a good fit for the material. She, too, is a close observer of nature and of the many aching, yearning people passing through it. But she has previously not made anything as traditionally tailored and refined as this. The humbler dimensions of her films The Rider and Nomadland are missed here; Hamnet too often gives off the effortful hum of prestige awards-bait.
But Zhao’s hallmark compassion and curiosity remain, qualities necessary to Hamnet, which could easily tilt into the realm of manipulative tearjerkers. Hamnet was, records tell us, Shakespeare’s son, who died at a young age and is thought to have inspired, at the very least, the title of Hamlet, the story of a young prince who meets a tragic end. What O’Farrell and now Zhao imagine is that the writing of Hamlet was an exercise in grieving, a way for Shakespeare to honor his son and bid him adieu.
[...]
Whatever Zhao doesn’t supply, though, is mostly made up for by the richly felt performances of the film’s two leads. Mescal is able to be far more expressive than he’s been allowed in quieter films such as Aftersun and The History of Sound. It is a pleasure to see the full breadth of his range, from seductive to shattered. It’s Buckley, though, who wholly envelops the film, giving staggering breath and body to Hamnet’s portrait of loss. She is nothing short of a wonder. (She also recorded a new version of the audiobook and does a terrific job at that.) It is on her shoulders that the film’s knockout climax rests. As she rises to the task, it is as if she is no longer acting but instead channeling a whole history of human

[LOCATION: THE SISTER CAFE] Philosophy Meetup: 17:00-18:30
Welcome to our weekly event in the upstairs room of The Sister Café, rue Chair et Pain 3, one block from the Grand Place. Please get there early enough to order your drink at the bar first. Thank you!
After introductions we will collect questions from the group participants, choose one by voting then discuss it for an hour. Then most of us stay for drinks and bizarre conversations.
Past questions have been wide and not confined to academic philosophy:
What is a genuine friend?
Is social media turning us into emotional zombies?
Do we lose some of the experience of things by defining them?
Are we driven by sex?
Is loneliness a personal failure?
Is morality relative?
**Crucially, be kind and respectful and generous** in your disagreements; remember how much you personally enjoy someone else proving you wrong before celebrating your cutting counterexamples.

Bad Girls Book Club January 2026
**Our January novel is: Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan**
**This month's featured novel is a 20th-century biographical fiction, coming-of-age, historical romance, women’s fiction, world literature, student biography, heartfelt, magic, and feel-good novel. The book is 311 pages in print and 7 hours and 8 minutes on audiobook.**
1950: Margaret Devonshire (Megs) is a seventeen-year-old student of mathematics and physics at Oxford University. When her beloved eight-year-old brother asks Megs if Narnia is real, logical Megs tells him it's just a book for children, and certainly not true. Homebound due to his illness, and remaining fixated on his favorite books, George presses her to ask the author of the recently released novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a question: "Where did Narnia come from?"
Despite her fear about approaching the famous author, who is a professor at her school, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with C. S. Lewis and his own brother Warnie, begging them for answers.
Rather than directly telling her where Narnia came from, Lewis encourages Megs to form her own conclusion as he shares the little-known stories from his own life that led to his inspiration. As she takes these stories home to George, the little boy travels farther in his imagination than he ever could in real life.
After holding so tightly to logic and reason, her brother's request leads Megs to absorb a more profound truth: "The way stories change us can't be explained. It can only be felt. Like love."

Join us on Sunday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking!
• What we'll do
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at noon on Sundays.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
SCHEDULE:
12:00 - quick intros.
12:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour.
1:10 - chat / take off / keep writing.
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 1-1:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session. If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing and I look forward to seeing you!
• What to bring
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block noise or the occasional conversation by other patrons. Electrical outlets are limited, so charge your devices before whenever possible.
See you at The Café on Sunday!
Pop-up Book Club: A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams
Let’s meet and discuss whatever comes to mind about one of Tennesse Williams’ most famous plays.
January Book Club - Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
For January, we’re reading Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy.
For fans of Flight Behavior and Station Eleven, a novel set on the brink of catastrophe, as a young woman chases the world's last birds--and her own final chance for redemption.
Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean's tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world's last flock of Arctic terns and track their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of the Saghani, to take her onboard, winning over his eccentric crew with promises that the birds will lead them to fish.
As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny's dark history begins to unspool. Battered by night terrors, accumulating a pile of unsent letters, and obsessed with pursuing the terns at any cost, Franny is full of secrets. When her quest threatens the safety of the entire crew, Franny must ask herself what she is really running toward--and running from.
Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile as the terns she is following, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is both an ode to our threatened world and a breathtaking page-turner about the lengths we will go for the people we love.
