Al Ghazali – Letter to a Disciple
Al Ghazali – Letter to a Disciple
*Please not that the event location has been updated. We will meet at 7 pm over dinner at the **restaurant Moudi's Lecker Garten** in Zürich.* Dear all, Building upon our book discussions in 2025, we will continue our meetings in 2026 with a dedicated bookclub focusing on Islamic philosophy and Sufism in dialogue with contemporary Muslim, Western, and global thought. Muslims as well as non-Muslims are equally welcome. We will begin in January with a short text by Al-Ghazali, one of the most influential scholars in the history of Islamic thought, who is also known for his critical engagement with philosophy. With *Letter to a Disciple / Ayyuha l-walad*, we have chosen an accessible text that lends itself well to a shared introductory reading. You can find the book on amazon.de, for example, but a PDF version is also available here: [https://www.emaanlibrary.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/letter-to-a-disciple-english.pdf](https://www.emaanlibrary.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/letter-to-a-disciple-english.pdf) We look forward to seeing you at our bookclub meetings. Baran and the team **P.S.** **Meeting location (updated):** We are meeting at the restaurant Moudi's Lecker Garten in Zürich. **Our reading for February 2026:** * *Philosophy in the Islamic World: A Very Short Introduction* by Peter Adamson **Books we read together in 2025 (for reference):** * *Islam and the Destiny of Man* by Gai Eaton * *Islam at the Crossroads* by Muhammad Asad \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- Liebe alle Aufbauend auf unseren Buchdiskussionen im Jahr 2025 werden wir unsere Treffen 2026 mit einem eigenen Buchclub fortsetzen, der sich auf islamische Philosophie und Sufismus im Austausch mit zeitgenössischem muslimischem, westlichem und globalem Denken konzentriert. Urban Sketching @ Museum Rietberg [new date+time]
We meet in front of the museum at the main entrance, which opens at 10:00. Admission is CHF 18. Only pencils and coloured pencils may be taken into and used in the exhibition. January Book Club - Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
January Book Club - Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
For January, we’re reading Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. For fans of Flight Behavior and Station Eleven, a novel set on the brink of catastrophe, as a young woman chases the world's last birds--and her own final chance for redemption. Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean's tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world's last flock of Arctic terns and track their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of the Saghani, to take her onboard, winning over his eccentric crew with promises that the birds will lead them to fish. As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny's dark history begins to unspool. Battered by night terrors, accumulating a pile of unsent letters, and obsessed with pursuing the terns at any cost, Franny is full of secrets. When her quest threatens the safety of the entire crew, Franny must ask herself what she is really running toward--and running from. Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile as the terns she is following, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is both an ode to our threatened world and a breathtaking page-turner about the lengths we will go for the people we love.
