Bank Holiday trek – Golders Hill Park and Pergola, 3.5 miles
We will meet opposite Hampstead tube station, by the Clock Tower (pictured below).
* We will then make our way via Heath Street to see the Jack Straw's Castle. Not that Jack Straw -:), this site is named after the rebel leader Jack Straw, who led the Peasants' Revolt in 1381 and who is said to have taken refuge on the site until he was caught and executed. It is mentioned in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, where Professor Van Helsing and Doctor Jack Seward stop to dine, and also in Harold Pinter's play No Man's Land.
* We will then make our way to see the Golders Hill Park. It adjoins the West Heath part of Hampstead Heath. It is chiefly grassy parkland, but it also has a formal, beautifully tended, flower garden next to a duck pond with a small humpback bridge, a separate water garden, which leads onto a larger pond, and a small free zoo, recently renovated.
* We will then make our way to see the Pergola (pictured above). The Pergola is one of the hidden delights of Hampstead Heath, and is very popular for wedding pictures, as well as with film and photography students. The Hill Garden is a beautiful, landscaped garden which was the private garden of a now demolished manor house.
* We will carry on to see the Burgh House, which is run by a charitable trust formed by local residents. Burgh House is free to visit and art lovers can always come back to see the world's largest archive and collection of Helen Allingham's work.
This is where the walk ends. Optional drinks at the local pub after the walk. Hampstead station is 5mins away. For members who prefer the Overground – Hampstead Heath is 10 mins away.
What to bring:
Comfortable footwear
Water
Photo-taking gadgets and chargers
An umbrella just in case (it's London after all)
The walk is free for members who have subscribed for an annual membership. For other members the fee is £5 cash/card on arrival to contribute towards the organiser's Meetup fees and costs.
The annual pass option is £15 payable by cash/card on the day. This will provide access to at least 40 walks per year (members are welcome to bring a guest to each event).
All walks are free for the NHS staff (also welcome to bring a guest).
***'No Show' Policy:*** *If the member replied 'yes' but did not attend the event, did not update the RSVP and did not inform the organisers on 3 occasions – this triggers an automatic removal from the group. That's once for events with a waiting list.*
Praed Street Picture Hunt
St Mary’s Hospital was founded in 1845 on Praed Street as a voluntary hospital for ’the deserving sick poor’ and opened the Medical School in 1854. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin there.
This is another of our many outside Picture Hunts this year. If any issues with weather, we’ll switch to our 50-50 Trivia in the nearby Wetherspoon Sir Alexander Fleming, so turn up as something will be on regardless.
If you’re new to Picture Hunts, check previous events for winners and clue sheets.
This time, the event will be centred around different shops on one side of Praed St, Paddington, so there’s no crossing of busy roads.
Please aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. The Hunt starts at 1:30. You're losing search time if you're late! Bring a pen please.
As usual, portions of the road are split up into four areas where teams search for the locations of photographed items in the street, buildings or shop windows, and then record where they found them.
Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area.
Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown!
This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these.
Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team.
For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start.
Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma!
The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt.
We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties.
There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for.
We mark up at the quiz finish point. The Wetherspoon Sir Alexander Fleming.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers.
This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
There is a £7 cash/card charge for this event.
Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed.
**If you can’t make it, please cancel using the “Edit RSVP Button”.**
**Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**

Bank holiday hike: Friston Forest, Cuckmere Haven & the most stunning sea views
Hey, Hey, Hey! It is bank holiday and what do we do on bank holidays? We join me on a fabulous trip. :)
This is one of the most fantastic coastal trips in the country and we are doing an easier version of it. There will be a few inclines but nothing like the nearby Seven sisters that you will see in the background so if you would like to enjoy walking in a living painting, join me for this trip.
We will start and finish in the seaside town of Seaford, walk these gorgeous woods of Friston alongside pretty cottages and flowery gardens before we head back to Seaford for a well deserved diner or a pint or to London if you do not wish to stay along for some more laughter.
And last but not least, the view of the Cuckmere river sneaking in the valley all the way to the sea is my favourite postcard view in the country, you could almost hear Vivaldi playing Spring in the background while unicorns and fauns are galloping in the fresh water. Really, do not miss it.
The hike is around 11 miles and medium, although there will be a couple of inclines.
A BIT OF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY.
FRISTON FOREST:
Friston Forest is within the South Downs National Park between Lulington Heath National Nature Reserve and Seven Sisters Country Park. It is the largest area of recently established forest in South East England, it has extensive carpets of Bluebells in late April to mid-May and some of the most stunning autumnal colours at the fall.
CUCKMERE HAVEN:
It is an area of flood plains in Sussex, England where the river Cuckmeer meets the English Chanel between [Eastbourne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbourne) and [Seaford](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaford,_East_Sussex). The river is an example of a meandering river
The beach was commonly used by smugglers in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. For example, in 1783 two gangs of smugglers (each numbering 200 or 300) overcame officers of the law by weight of numbers and carried away a large quantity of goods. It is one of the most visited beaches in the UK.

The Haven and the nearby cliffs offer some of the most stunning photographs you will ever take, the purple sea thrift flowers adding an impeccable touch to the white and red cliffs

Master Street Photography – A Beginners Guide to Capturing Candid Moments
**Develop Your Eye for Everyday Street Scenes** **– Central London**
This mini-workshop is all about observing and capturing the fleeting moments and unpredictability of people on the streets. You will learn how to anticipate, spot, and photograph fleeting moments. These unscripted interactions are the heart of street photography. Having shot the streets for 16 years, I know what makes a moment compelling. The challenge—and the skill—is seeing what others don’t. Through practical, creative challenges I give during the session, you’ll start training your eye to notice gestures, expressions, and interactions that often go unnoticed, helping you capture candid, real-life stories as they unfold. Master Night Street photography - A Beginners Guide In Low-Light, Neon & Noir
**Let's Shoot Noir Street Photography in Covent Garden London After Dark**
This mini-workshop event focuses on shooting street photography after dark. You will learn tips for low-light shooting, handheld techniques, and how to creatively use existing city lighting.
Covent Garden after dark has a unique energy. Street lamps, shop windows, neon signs, and passing traffic create natural contrast, cinematic tones, and deep, moody shadows. Certain areas have a real noir vibe, with back streets and alleys perfect for silhouettes and atmospheric street portrait shots. The location itself becomes part of your frame, adding depth and story without the need for a flash.
This session focuses on capturing moody, creatively-lit street photography using the city’s existing lights. Occasionally, a model will be present as a point of focus to help you practice shooting subjects in varied real-world night-light conditions.
***
**What You Will Learn**
* **Reading Available Light:** Observe neon signage, street lamps, traffic, and reflections and use them creatively in your shots.
* **Handheld Night Shooting:** Adjust ISO, shutter speed, and aperture for sharp, well-exposed images while shooting handheld.
* **Creative Use of Light on Subjects:** Learn how to make people stand out using the available neon and street lighting.
* **Exposure and Mood Control:** Balance highlights, shadows, and neon to capture the “noir” atmosphere.
* **Quick Observation & Reaction:** Train your eye to spot photo opportunities in challenging night conditions.
* **Getting to Know Your Kit:** Understand what your camera and lenses can do in low light so you can react confidently.
***
**What to Bring**
* **Camera Kit:** A lens around 35–50 mm is ideal—wide enough for street scenes, close enough for portraits of the model. A fast (prime) lens with a wide **aperture** (f/1.4–f/2.8) is recommended to help you shoot at night. You’re also welcome to use a smartphone. This workshop focuses on helping beginners master camera settings in varied night conditions.
* **Essentials:** Cleared memory card and fully charged batteries. Extra batteries recommended.
* **Travel Light:** Comfortable shoes & clothing suited to the weather.
