🌆🚶‍♂️ THE PATH WALK & LUNCH ADVENTURE 🚶‍♂️🌆
🌆🚶‍♂️ THE PATH WALK & LUNCH ADVENTURE 🚶‍♂️🌆
🌆🚶‍♂️ THE PATH WALK & LUNCH ADVENTURE 🚶‍♂️🌆 Toronto’s Underground City… Let’s Go Get Lost (On Purpose) Did you know Toronto has an entire second city beneath the city? Welcome to **PATH (Toronto)** — a 30-kilometre maze of tunnels, walkways, food courts, shops, office towers, and hidden corners connecting more than 70 buildings in the downtown core. It’s climate-controlled. It’s slightly confusing. It’s uniquely Toronto. And we’re going to explore it together — above ground first, then descending into the urban underworld like the confident city adventurers we are. [NOW Magazine piece](https://web.archive.org/web/20220429041937/https://nowtoronto.com/lifestyle/health/toronto-walk-exploring-the-path-in-winter) about the PATH awhile back. 👉 **Don’t forget to join our WhatsApp group** – [CLICK HERE!](https://chat.whatsapp.com/H59mSCbsAi018gYANrKAnc?mode=ac_t) *** 🗺️ The Plan We’ll begin at Wellesley Station and start by walking west. Then we’ll head south and eventually make our grand entrance into the PATH system. From there, we’ll continue indoors, weaving our way south through the network — past office towers, hidden corridors, and pockets of unexpected energy — all the way down to **Union Station**. At Union, we’ll head into the food court to grab lunch, sit down, and actually socialize (because that’s the point, right?). Expect lots of conversation, a little “Wait… where are we?” and a whole lot of discovering how this city secretly works. It’s part walking tour, part social hang, part urban exploration. *** 🌧️ Rain or Shine (Mostly Shine Because… Indoors) This walk goes ahead rain or shine. The beauty of the PATH? We’ll be indoors for large portions of the route. That said, we’ll start above ground — so dress appropriately. It may be wise to bring a backpack or bag for your coat once we’re inside. You don’t want to be carrying it dramatically over your arm like you’re in a soap opera. *** 🐾 Important Notes Dogs are not allowed in the PATH system. Service animals are of course welcome. *** 🧢 Meetup Details 📍 Meetup Spot: Main entrance of Wellesley Station (near the bank of PRESTO machines) 🫎 I’ll be wearing my Moose Hat ⏰ Start time as listed — please arrive on time We’ll begin promptly so we can stay on route. *** 🎟️ **Meetup Fee:** $5 cash in person **or** e-transfer to 📧 \*\*[mathewmaclean@hotmail.com**](http://mathewmaclean@hotmail.com%2A%2A/) This fee helps support the group and allows us to keep hosting events like this. Thank you for supporting community! 💖 *** 🌈 Who Is This For? This group is open to anyone who wants to be social and make friends — whether single or not. We also host: 🎬 Movies 🚶 Walks & hikes 🎭 Arts & culture outings 🍽️ Restaurant meetups There’s always something happening. And remember — you can just show up on the day if you’re unsure about your schedule. *** ⚠️ A Gentle Reminder Sometimes life throws curveballs and events may need to be canceled — please keep an eye on updates. *** 👤 Organizer: Mathew Questions? Post on the event wall or email 📧 torontomoviesandoutings@hotmail.com Come for the tunnels. Stay for the laughs. Leave knowing a secret shortcut through downtown that most people still pretend to understand. Toronto has layers. Let’s go explore one of them. 🏙️✨
[In-person] Curiosity Café: Laughing Matters – Humour in Our Lives
[In-person] Curiosity Café: Laughing Matters – Humour in Our Lives
We experience and produce humour through the memes we spread and the inside jokes we share with friends, and we even use it when facing life’s most difficult challenges. Humour can help us bond, cope, and rethink our assumptions. But what makes something funny? Why do humour and the laughter it produces play an important role in our culture? One answer is that humour can help break down barriers and bring people together. As Victor Borge once said, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” Humour can also be used as a social instrument to call out misconduct. How is it that humour fosters community and division at the same time? At our next Curiosity Café, we’ll revisit the silly and serious sides of humour, and explore the role that humour plays in how we connect, think and live. Together, we’ll discuss questions like: * How does humour help break down barriers and bring people together? * Does humour have a unique ability to help us find common ground and strengthen relationships? * On the other hand, does how we respond to humour have implications for our social capital? * How might jokes or humour be perceived by people from different backgrounds? * Is it possible to create humour that’s both provocative and inclusive? * How might humour give us a sense of control? * What is or should be the role of comedy in society? Join us for a lively and collaborative conversation moderated by Erik Ai and Dylan Michels, where we’ll explore questions, new and old, and (hopefully) share plenty of laughs along the way. **Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-revisited-no-laughing-matter-humour-in-our-lives-tickets-1985339500891) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 2-2:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 2:30-4:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle. Hope to see you there! ***__________________________________________________________________*** This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us. By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. Find out more about Being and Becoming [here](https://beingnbecoming.org/). About the Curiosity Café Series: For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.

Long Point Classic Birding Extravaganza including Ruthven Park
Long Point Classic Birding Extravaganza including Ruthven Park
Greetings Bird Lovers, Why do we keep returning to Long Point? The answer is simple. At this time of year, there is no place in Southern Ontario quite like it for the sheer number and variety of birds we can see. Our last few trips to Long Point have been exceptional, and every visit seems to deliver something exciting. On our last two outings, we have saw several Bald Eagles, seen thousands of Sandhill Cranes, and enjoyed literally thousands of ducks. At times, it feels like stepping right into a National Geographic special. The birding can be that good. As spring begins to build, the longer days and milder temperatures make this one of the most enjoyable times to be outside. The first migrants are returning, Red-winged Blackbirds are beginning to sing, and the whole landscape starts to feel alive again. For me, spring is the most exciting season of all, and Long Point is one of those places that never disappoints. Long Point is one of Ontario’s most celebrated birding destinations and is recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area. Birds are present here year-round, but spring is when things really begin to come alive. We will be watching for a wide variety of waterfowl, Sandhill Cranes, Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, and whatever other surprises the day may bring. We'll also be making a stop at Turkey Point for a chance to see rare Little Gulls and Bonaparte Gulls. We are also stopping at Ruthven Park, where we have a chance to see Tufted Titmouse and Eastern Bluebird. As always, I will keep an eye on local bird news, and if something unusual has turned up, we may adjust our route to give ourselves the best chance of seeing it. That is part of the fun at this time of year. You never know what might show up. Whether you are a seasoned birder, a newer birder, or a photographer who simply loves being out in nature, this trip is for you. Long Point is a wonderful place to enjoy birds, scenery, and the excitement of spring migration. Binoculars are recommended, and a camera is always a great idea. One of the things that makes these outings so enjoyable is the friendly atmosphere. We always have a fun group, plenty of laughs, and a shared excitement for whatever the day brings. It should be a fantastic day out, and I would love to have you join us. We will meet at the Finch Station Passenger Pick-Up and Drop-Off area at 7:45 a.m. and depart promptly at 8:00 a.m. We expect to return at approximately 5:30 p.m. after exploring several excellent birding areas southwest of Toronto. There is space for up to 3 bird lovers in my vehicle. The cost is $99 plus tax, for a total of $112. To reserve your spot, payment can be made by PayPal or by e-transfer to torontonaturelovers@hotmail.com. If you send an e-transfer, please let me know so I can manually add you to the trip. Important: transportation is provided, and spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Come join us for a wonderful spring day of birding, nature, and great company at one of Ontario’s very best birding destinations.

You can e-transfer to the following email at:** **torontohistorywalks@gmail.com** The West Toronto Junction is back! It has been reworked and a new route explores more of this historic area. Prior to this, the walk crossed Dundas to the north, this tour remains on the southern side and extends to Keele Street and the real industrial heart of the area. One of Toronto's most walkable and fascinating neighbourhoods, and is steeped in history. Located in Toronto's west end, west of Lansdowne Avenue, the area is surrounded on three sides by railway lines: the CNR mainline to the west, Metrolinx to the east, and the CPR east-west line to the north. Dundas Street is the heart and main street of the Junction, but also provides the area with a southern boundary, creating a compact well defined neighbourhood. The village was a centre for industry, and was lined with railway tracks hence the name the Junction. Paint, ceramics, chemicals, and the Ontario Stock Yards were also nearby. Industry gave way to the worker's residences, and by the 1950s the neighbourhood was multicultural consisting of Maltese, Italian, Polish, and Macedonian immigrants. Later, the area became predominantly Portuguese. This area was also an area of churches set in a garden like setting. Now most of the churches have been converted to residences, but we still have them as historic markers of a lost era. This walk is for all fitness levels. The meeting place for our walking adventure is outside the Annette Street Branch of the Toronto Public Library at 145 Annette Street in West Toronto, just a block south of Dundas Street West. This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person! \*\* **Please note: Please e-transfer the ticket amount when booking your space for this tour! Humanist Program
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. Join us as we get together for an Arthouse Movie Friday event to see the A24 dark comedy /romance / psychological-thriller, THE DRAMA! The film stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a happily engaged couple whose relationship is challenged when one discovers unsettling truths about the other. Here are details, a trailer and our plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: The film follows a happily engaged couple whose relationship is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails. The film comes from A24, is written/directed by Kristoffer Borgli stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Mamoudou Athie, Alana Haim, Hailey Gates and Zoë Winters. QUICK WORD OF WARNING: The film hasn’t screened for critics yet and most of the details are being kept tightly under wraps. But, early buzz (possibly promotional) says the film is a brilliant psychological thriller/romance but also provocative, twisty and some contains occasional uncomfortable viewing! I love the cast and trailer, so look forward to seeing for ourselves! The film premiered to solid reviews at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival where critics declared, “TOW is a winner!” It’s “a story of perseverance, heart, and real fight, the kind of small human story we see less frequently these days, but need now more than ever.” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdkpcsuPAhA THEY WILL KILL YOU: A woman takes a job as a housekeeper in a NYC high-rise, unaware of the building's history of disappearances. She soon realizes the community is shrouded in mystery. The film is directed by Kirill Sokolov and Zadie Beetz, Myha'la, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette. The film is being released immediately following its premiere at this year’s SXSW Festival earlier this month. Early reviews say it’s “an adrenaline rush of action-packed fights, tons of blood and gore and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments” and a movie that’s “unafraid to march to its own campy, violent, and clever little drummer!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYqQPiXpi4w PLAN: Not exactly a “Choose Your Movie” event, more like an early show and a late one (or both if you’re feeling sparky)! \* If you’d like to see TOW, please purchase your ticket for the 5:00pm showing and meet in the upstairs lobby between 4:40 and 4:50pm! \* If you plan to see THEY WILL KILL YOU, please purchase your ticket for the 7:45pm showing and meet in the upstairs lobby between 7:25 and 7:35pm! \* Tickets for both films on sale now and advance purchase is advised! Tickets just $5.00 ($6.50 after online fees when purchased via the GFC website). Once you have yours, please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event. \* Also, as a reminder, close, convenient parking available in the nearby garage (Between 9th and 11th, just off High) and just $2 when you have your ticket validated at the theater! Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
