All About the Historic Beaches! (EVENING EXTENDED TOUR)
\*\***The Toronto History Walks Yearly Pass is available. You can e-transfer to the following email at:** [torontohistorywalks@gmail.com](http://torontohistorywalks@gmail.com%2A%2A/) The area was first settled in 1794 by the Ashbridge family, whose name is remembered by the nearby bay and park. Their homestead on Queen Street East was well to the west of the area currently identified as the Beaches. A later generation of the Ashbridge family rebuilt the family home in 1854 and can be seen on Queen Street East opposite the TTC barns near Kingston Road. The Beaches remained a sparely settled community until the end of the 19th century when extension of the Grand Truck Railway, the draining of the northern parts of Ashbridges Bay, and the construction of street car tracks on Queen Street and Kingston Road, opened the area to settlement. From Sunnyside Amusement Park built in 1922 to Scarboro Beach built in 1906, it seemed that Toronto cornered the market on summertime chills and thrills. We had 5 major amusement parks along our waterfront, and two smaller parks, Victoria Park and Munro Park, virtually unknown to Torontonians today, but extremely popular summertime places, years ago as pleasure parks. This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history. It begins outside the Beaches Branch of the Toronto Public Library at Queen Street East, and Lee Avenue adjacent to Kew Gardens. The tour ends at the Neville Park Queen Street Streetcar Loop. This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person. \*\* **Please note: Please e-transfer the ticket price when booking your space for this tour! Camping at High Falls on Eels Creek Fri Apr 17 to Sun Apr 19
Camping at High Falls on Eels Creek Fri Apr 17 to Sun Apr 19
This trip is organized by James at [Ontario Backcountry Camping](https://www.meetup.com/ontariobackcountry/). To register go to: [Camping at High Falls on Eels Creek, Fri, Apr 17, 2026, 12:00 PM | Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/ontariobackcountry/events/313823145/?eventOrigin=group_upcoming_events) Canoe, Kayak, or hike to High Falls on Eels Creek, 2 hours from Toronto. **The meeting location and put-in is the parking lot on Northeys Bay Road. Coordinates are 44.58821797620266, -78.07077482325549** This is a short 20-30 minute paddle up Eels Creek (or 5KM hike) for a spring camping trip. Stay for one night or two, up to you. There is some fast moving water at the start which we can portage around if the current is too strong, after that it's an easy paddle. We will setup camp close to the falls or on the small lake close by. There is a hiking trail from the parking lot to the falls but may not be easy this time of year due to high water on a creek crossing. If you want to hike in, that is an option, but waders might be a good idea. Explore the trail or portage your boat up the falls and continue upstream for a paddle. I was here 10+ years ago; there is a really nice waterfall, some rapids upstream which I was able to paddle through, and some petroglyphs on the rocks along side the creek. I have not hiked the trail but I hear it's a good hike. This is crown land so camping is free. You can try the hike, bring a canoe/kayak, have a paddle partner with a canoe, or arrange a shuttle to camp. The paddle is short so we could make multiple trips. I will be canoeing in on Friday. Be prepared for the weather. **You are responsible for yourself and your own safety.**

Ride the Toronto Loop
Ride the Toronto Loop
After a half century(!) it’s time to close The Toronto Loop. [TORONTO COMMUNITY BIKEWAYS COALITION](https://www.communitybikewaysto.ca/) is producing and leading this epic spring ride. Volunteer marshalls will support the ride. The Loop trail is an ALMOST complete 72km circuit of trails that includes the waterfront, Humber River, Finch Hydro Corridor, and Don River trails. Unfortunately, there are about ten small gaps that undermine the value of The Loop Trail for everyday/utilitarian, recreational, and tourism cyclists. The Loop Trail is part of the city's Ravine Strategy, although the gaps are all on roads. The Loop was first announced by the city in 2020, but there has been little progress -- until the launch of the TCBC advocacy campaign and ride in November 2025. You can ride with us for the full 72km, or join us at various locations **Estimated Itinerary:** 9 AM The Well, in front of Fix Coffee & Bikes - they have Bromptons & great in-house made pastries! 9:40 Foot of Humber bridge \~ group photo 10:10 James Gardens off Edenbridge \~ washroom break 10:55 West Humber Gap \~ ascend stairway :( 12 noon Finch at Weston Rd SW Corner Parking Lot \~ snack break & staging area for Finch rail underpass route 1 PM Esther Shiner Community Centre \~ Lunch & washroom break 1:45 Finch at top of East Don Trail 2 Sheppard at Leslie 2:10 401 Underpass crossing 2:30 exit from Betty Sutherland Trail at Duncan Mills Rd 3:15 Brickworks at Bayview Ave \~ washroom break 4:15 Return to The Well We expect 50+ people to ride with us! TCBC estimates 6.5 hours (I think it'll take longer) with lunch & washroom breaks so bring water, snacks, stamina, and reality if you cannot ride this ride or at a pace to keep up. **CHECK** your bicycle's brakes, air, and chain prior to the day.

You can e-transfer to the following email at:** **[torontohistorywalks@gmail.com](http://torontohistorywalks@gmail.com/)** This tour was one of the original 5 tours that started it all back in 2019. Hear about the stories that still haunt Toronto. From the murder of a shoeshine boy to the place where the gallows were constructed. Stories of Toronto's hidden history. So you want to hear all about Toronto's darkest moments, do you? Toronto has a rich and varied history, we all know that, or we should. Let's explore new and old stories of Toronto's darkest historical moments, a new crop of dark secrets, and a few of the old stories to make the blood run cold. And these secrets will be revealed in time. That's all I'm saying. I guess you'll have to sign up and commit to the true darkness hidden in the human spirit. This horrific walking tour is for all levels and walkers. The tour begins on the site of the old Ford Hotel at the northeast corner of Dundas Street West and Bay Street, or the western doors to the Atrium on Bay. The tour ends at old City Hall on Queen Street West. And if you dare, I'll see you soon on Toronto's Darkest side. Say hello to Don....don river
Say hello to Don....don river
**MeetUp Location: Finch Subway Station** Toronto is filled with great nature to explore! So we are off to visit Don,; don river who connects nature throughout toronto and runs far. \*City Hike along the Old Rail Corridor Trail and East Don River\* This 15+ km trail starts and ends at subway stations, winds through lush ravines with river views, and offers spring greenery in mid-April that's vibrant after winter. In mid-April, Toronto's ravines burst with fresh green leaves on maples and oaks, wildflowers like trilliums start blooming, and the Don River flows actively from snowmelt, creating small cascades. Expect clear valley views, birdwatching (woodpeckers, herons), and possible deer sightings in the wooded sections—far more vivid than winter's bare trees. This time avoids summer crowds and bugs while highlighting spring's renewal, with mild temperatures perfect for a perfect outing. \*Trail Overview\* Begin at Finch Station on Line 1 (Yonge-University). Head northeast via nearby paths into Newtonbrook Park, then connect east to the Don River trails in East Don Parkland. The route follows German Mills Creek and the East Don River south through forested parklands, passing interpretive signs and memorial trees, before reaching Leslie Station on Line 4 (Sheppard). Total distance is around 15-18 km one-way, taking 4-5 hours at a moderate pace. \*Practical Tips\* Pack water, snacks, and layers for variable ravine microclimates; trails are mostly flat with some moderate hills/roots, suitable for trail runners or hikers. Check TTC for service (frequent on Lines 1/4)
Wilder Series: The Wilder Loop
Wilder Series: The Wilder Loop
**Please note the only way to register for this adventure is on [our website.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/wilder-loop-26)** **Welcome to the original Wilder Series adventure- a very challenging hike through a wild, secret location.** The Wilder Loop is 20 km of remote, rugged terrain through one of Ontario’s most untouched landscapes. Right from the start, the trail throws you into the wild: the first 5 km have everything we love about backcountry hiking; twisting forest paths, sweeping granite ridges, narrow boardwalks, and multiple beaver dams to scramble across. No two kilometers are the same, and every twist in the trail feels like a secret waiting to be found. Once we hit the loop section, things get much quieter. This part of the park sees very few visitors as human footprints give way to moose tracks, and the rustling in the brush might just be one of the many beavers that call this area home. Though the total elevation gain is relatively modest (about 260 m over the whole route), the trail’s difficulty comes from its remoteness, terrain, and ever-changing conditions. That said, for those willing to take it on, the reward is huge: sweeping views, total solitude, an unfiltered experience of Ontario’s boreal beauty... and a well-earned sense of pride by the time we make it back to the trailhead. ***Secret Location*** This is one of Wilderness Union's 'secret' hikes. As a group, we visit some truly special spots that are undiscovered by the wider world. We like to keep them pristine and only share them among our members- we ask that you do the same! We reveal the location to registered members in the days before the trip. **Highlights** **Untouched Wilderness-** Step into a landscape that feels frozen in time; wild, windswept, and wonderfully remote. Just you, the forest, and the sound of your boots on the trail. **Wildlife Spotting -** Bears, moose, beavers and loons are just some of the creatures that call this area home. You'll have a chance to spot some from a safe distance for a magical encounter. **Beaver Dam Crossings -** The area we're visiting is shaped by beavers. Tiptoe across nature’s original bridges- muddy, meticulously built, and surprisingly sturdy. **Event cost: $60+HST - optional transport available.** **Register [here.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/wilder-loop-26)** **About Wilderness Union** Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people. Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad. Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming! ***Learn more at our website [www.wildernessunion.com](https://www.wildernessunion.com/)***

You can e-transfer to the following email at:** **[torontohistorywalks@gmail.com](http://torontohistorywalks@gmail.com/)** This is an updated tour to the original Ward Tour introduced back in 2020. It brings in a new crop of landmarks that tell the tale of Toronto's first suburb Macaulaytown, on the property of James Macaulay. The Ward, Toronto's first suburb, first immigrant community and first large scale urban renewal project is a neighbourhood that dates to the beginnings of local history. Bounded by Yonge Street on the east, College Street on the north, University on the West, and Queen Street on the south, is a history walkers dream. But before the area developed and a civic square was even dreamed of, it was forest on the edge of Little York, with a clear flowing creek, named Taddle at its centre. A few years later James Macaulay established himself in the area northwest of the town of York. By mid-century the winds of change brought in Chinese rail workers and Jewish immigrants, mostly from Eastern Europe. The face of The Ward changed once again, but this time the ugly realties of racial injustice were prominent. With the building of the new Toronto General Hospital in 1909 the area reinvented itself, and the mass migration of jewish residents to the Kensington Market area to the west started. The Ward changed again and the idea that the area could be a pedestrian square with a new town hall at its centre took shape. And the rest as they say is history, Toronto got its new civic square and Toronto a new voice at the dawn of a new era in city building. The ward is a fascinating look at life in Toronto in the late 19th, 20th, and 21 century. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history as well. Hope to see you there. Feeling down? Sometimes depressed? Can't focus? Negativity & stress? Recent losses? Creativity in career and personal life hindered by mental blocks? Sometimes we never fully recover from traumatic experiences. Whether it was yesterday, last week or a year ago, traumatic experiences - a loss of a loved one, losing a job, a breakup - can leave you scarred. You talk about it and feel a little better, but it never goes away. After you hang up the phone, it's still there; the sadness, the cloud, the over-thinking, the worry, the guilt. You try to focus, but you're blocked. You try to look forward into new experiences, new relationships but a cloud is hanging over you, casting a shadow on what you once considered a bright, cheerful future. What happened to your courage? Your strength of character? You're 'why not' attitude? Whoever said 'time heals' must have had a special time machine, because after weeks, months, years, you're wondering - when exactly does that kick in? Sometimes it seems like drinking or drugs are the way to go. But they wear off, and now the problem is still there with added side effects from the drugs. At this free local Meetup event we will talk about: * What causes grief, anxiety and depression to become chronic. * Is it possible to regain your joy and happiness even after traumatic experiences? * How to break away from negativity and focus on the future * What are the steps to take to get control of your mind and your emotions? Learn about a safe, gentle, do-it-yourself counseling that can be done in the comfort of your own home. Let's explore safe, effective solutions for healing from traumatic experiences. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to the event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center.
