Dialogues #29 - Topic: Modern Communities
In a world full of opinions, noise, and quick reactions, we often miss spaces for real dialogue â for slowing down, listening, and connecting with one another. This evening is an invitation to do exactly that.
Join us for an open and friendly evening (in English & free of charge) dedicated to the Modern Communities, where we will brainstorm together what we want to discuss from this broad topic - questions to help you get inspired:
What makes communitie?
How communities have changed through out time?
Are our support systems working? Are they enough?
Afterwards, participants will form small groups to explore the questions like (in an Open Spaceâstyle format, where participants choose topics themselves)
18:00 â Doors open
18:15 â Introduction & topic selection
18:40 - We start discussions
19:40 - Closing session (sharing activities)
20:00 - Networking & Connect

A welcoming space for newcomers and regulars alike
Be slightly pushed to socialise
Open, participant-led small-group discussions on diverse perspectives
No expertise required â everyoneâs opinion matters!

Feel free to bring some snacks to share!
Friendly dogs are welcome!
If you are a regular that appreciate us and can help, or a newcomer who enjoyed the evening, and wants to help, we have recently set a patreon page where you can support us!

MEANINGFUL CONVERSTION NIGHT
Most of our conversations stay safe.
Polite. Functional. Predictable.
Meaningful Conversations Night is an invitation to step just a little beyond that â into conversations that feel more alive, real, and human.
Not through oversharing or forcing depth, but by learning how to work with whatâs already happening in the moment.
This evening is inspired by Authentic Relating practices and conscious communication, and is designed to help people connect in ways that feel grounded, natural, and genuine.
What this event offers:
This is a 2-hour guided experience, not a lecture or networking event.
It includes:
⢠A simple, accessible introduction to meaningful conversation skills
⢠Structured, consent-based conversational exercises
⢠One-on-one and small group dialogues
⢠Time to reflect and integrate between rounds
The focus is on direct experience, not theory.
You wonât be asked to perform, fix yourself, or be âgood at sharing.â
Youâll be guided step by step.
What are âmeaningful conversationsâ?
Meaningful conversations are not about:
⢠Asking better questions
⢠Being more interesting
⢠Sharing your life story
They are about:
⢠Noticing whatâs alive right now
⢠Speaking honestly without oversharing
⢠Listening in a way that creates real contact
⢠Staying present with yourself while connecting with others
The practices explore things like:
⢠Naming what youâre experiencing in the moment
⢠Expressing curiosity, appreciation, or uncertainty
⢠Navigating awkwardness with more ease
⢠Letting conversations deepen naturally, without force
All interactions are opt-in, respectful, and well-contained.
Who this night is for:
⢠People craving deeper connection beyond small talk
⢠Those interested in Authentic Relating or conscious communication
⢠Introverts and extroverts alike
⢠Anyone who enjoys reflection, presence, and real dialogue
⢠People who want to feel more relaxed and confident in conversations
No previous experience is required.
You can participate at your own pace â listening is always welcome.
Important practical notes:
⢠Please arrive on time so we can begin together
⢠This is a guided, structured space (not free mingling)
⢠Recommended to buy tickets in advance
The space is held with care, clarity, and consent.
About the facilitator:
The evening is facilitated by William Gan, a coach and facilitator trained in Authentic Relating, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and conscious communication.
His work focuses on helping people:
⢠Feel more at ease being themselves
⢠Communicate with clarity and warmth
⢠Build deeper relationships without self-betrayal or pressure
He holds spaces that are grounded, welcoming, and practical â
making it easier to relax and meet others as you are.

Discussing "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky
Since the heavy long days of winter are descending upon Prague, let's read something to lighten the mood - "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoyevsky.
Okay maybe the book isn't going to lighten the mood much but...
We'll have a discussion around the following 3 questions:
1. Does Raskolnikov's suffering constitute genuine punishment, or is his confession driven more by psychological collapse than moral awakening?
2. How does the novel complicate the idea of extraordinary people being "above" conventional morality?
3. Why does Raskolnikov confess to Sonya rather than to someone who shares his intellectual framework?
Unlike other books we've read so far, understanding the context of Russia's history isn't needed to have a good discussion.
If you think a lively discussion around "Crime and Punishment" sounds fun, please join us, even if you haven't attended any of the other events or don't know Russian history.

Enframing the Present: Reading Heidegger on Technology
Weâre launching the Critical Futures Collective with Martin Heideggerâs *The Question Concerning Technology* â a short but profoundly influential essay that asks what technology *really* is beyond devices, apps, and machines. Heidegger argues that modern technology doesnât just change the world around us; it changes how the world is revealed to us, and in turn how we understand ourselves.
Itâs a dense, provocative text that lays the groundwork for thinking about subjectivity, acceleration, and the pressures of the digital age â exactly the terrain this group will explore. Weâll approach it through close reading and shared inquiry, working passage by passage rather than offering summaries or lectures.
The essay is compact enough to discuss in one meeting, but rich enough to merit a second. If the conversation demands it, weâll happily continue in a follow-up session.
Paradise Lost: Book II + III
For our second meeting, we continue our slow, attentive reading of Paradise Lost by turning to Books II and III, where Milton widens the scope of the poem and deepens its moral stakes.
Book II takes us into the council of fallen angels, where debate, persuasion, and self-justification replace the thunder of the opening fall. Here, Milton explores rhetoric, leadership, and the subtle ways freedom and ambition can distort judgment. We follow Satan beyond the assembly, across the abyss, toward the newly created world, watching resolve harden into purpose.
Book III shifts dramatically in perspective. We move from Hell to Heaven, from darkness to light, and encounter the poemâs vision of divine knowledge, foreknowledge, and human freedom. Milton asks some of his most difficult questions here: Can freedom exist alongside omniscience? What does responsibility mean in a universe where outcomes are foreseen but not compelled? How does love operate when disobedience is already known?
Please read Books II and III in advance. No other preparation is required. Bring your questions, uncertainties, and reflections. This seminar is not about arriving at answers, but about staying with the tension Milton so deliberately creates, together, and seeing how it speaks to us as modern readers.

This is for anyone wanting feedback! We mostly focus on novels and longer works, but short stories are welcome, as well. You can submit anything you want feedback on in any genre. Current word limit for submissions is 4,000 words. Send your submissions by 13:30 the Thursday before the meeting (or we have a grace period during which you can submit a lower limit of 2,500 words if you submit by midnight Thursday evening). Also, if you don't have time to read through everyone's submissions, still join the meeting! We know that busy schedules don't always make finding reading time easy.
To submit, use the Dropbox folder. If you don't have access to it, send sonyalakadosch@yahoo.com your e-mail address so I can add you.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there! My number in case of any confusion the day of the meeting is 737 118 530 - or on Facebook: Sonya Lano (https://www.facebook.com/sonya.lano)
DROPBOX INFO:
* add new submissions for the next meeting in the " submissions" folder for the meeting date. Put your name at the beginning of the file name (for example: "Sonya Somewhere in the Dark")
* When providing written feedback (not required, but deeply welcome), save the file as a separate document on your device, then mark your changes/ feedback in the saved file. After you're finished, put the file in the "Feedback" folder under the folder for the meeting date and then under the person the feedback is for (e.g. "For Sonya").
* The submissions folder will be replaced within a week after the meeting has taken place. Feedback will be deleted within 2 months after the meeting, so if you need it longer than that, make sure to copy it to your own disk.

Intro to GitHub Copilot: Your AI Pair Programmer - Chris Steele
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
**Abstract**
GitHub Copilot is rapidly changing how developers write, understand, and maintain code. Powered by generative AI and deeply integrated into modern development environments, Copilot acts as an intelligent coding assistant, helping developers move faster while maintaining quality and focus.
In this session, weâll explore what GitHub Copilot is, how it works, and where it fits into a real-world developer workflow. Weâll break down what Copilot can (and cannot) do, where it can be used, and how licensing differs for individuals and organizations. Most importantly, this talk goes beyond theory with a live, hands-on demo showcasing Copilot inside the IDE and on GitHub, demonstrating how it can assist with code generation, refactoring, learning new APIs, and accelerating day-to-day development tasks.
Designed for developers, technical leads, and engineering managers, this session provides a practical introduction to AI-assisted development, highlights best practices for getting value from Copilot, and closes with guidance on how to continue learning and evolving alongside this rapidly advancing tool.
Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how GitHub Copilot can enhance productivity, improve developer experience, and fit into modern software teams today, not someday.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Doing KPIs Right
**Doing KPIs Right: a KEY to Analytics (and AI!) Impact!**
On the one hand, KPIs are such a Business 101 concept that it may seem a little silly to dedicate an entire session to the topic. On the other hand, KPIs get handled so poorly so often that a case could be made that this meetup could just be one of the most impactful sessions of the entire year!
Weâre starting off the year at a new location: [COhatch Upper Arlington](https://www.cohatch.com/locations/columbus/upper-arlington/) but with a familiar speaker, Tim Wilson! Weâll be back at Rev1 in February, when the speaker will presumably not be Tim.
Tim will make the case that effectively measuring performance of projects, campaigns, and initiatives (and even meetups!) should be a foundation for any data analytics program. Topics covered will include: the âtwo magic questionsâ of performance measurement, how to help business partners distinguish between outcomes and outputs, and effective tactics for collaboratively establishing KPI targets.
He will also stick his neck out by demonstrating some of these techniques in real-time by measuring whether his talk lives up to the promise of this description!
All CBUSDAW events are free thanks to our 2026 Sponsors: Clarivoy, Conductrics, What Box Consulting Group, and Piwik PRO.
