Every month on the second Thursday Justin Heath and Mari Carlson run bluegrass jam for players of all skill levels. Traditional fiddle tunes and bluegrass songs are encouraged, but the odd country or Grateful Dead song are welcome as long as we can grassify it. Sac au Lait has been bringing New Orleans Traditional Jazz to the area for 20 years. This happy music will make you smile & move your feet! Dubbed “Baltimore’s Finest in Dixieland” by the City Paper, Sac au Lait has been playing melodies New Orleans Traditional Jazz in the Baltimore/DC area for over 20 years. The band brings plenty of youthful energy, mixing vocal and instrumental tunes to get people happy and dancing! The appeal of this music from the ’20s and ’30s is broad, and that has allowed them to perform in all types of venues for a variety of audiences. Ocho de Bastos first event this year is at the art blooms festival at Mosaic District in Virginia. I know several members of our group, also known as groupies, will not mind crossing the river. I am including a map to help us find the stage. Bring a chair in case you need to pause from dancing. There will be free shuttle buses from the Dunn Loring metro station.

That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. The Forge does have a full bar and kitchen. There is no cover charge but they do request all attendees to purchase a minimum of ~$20 per person. Soft drink refills are $1 each. Please support our hosts so we can continue to provide great events for the group! The Forge has a large library of games available for us to enjoy. Hosts and regulars will also provide numerous popular games but please bring any games you would like to teach and/or play. Doors open at 6, and we expect gaming to be rolling by around 630. Please promptly end your games and clear out the space at 10pm when the bar closes. We encourage socializing but do not permit disruptive behavior of any kind.
