**On a whim** Have you ever done something impulsively - a haircut or a tattoo you regretted, a random date that turned into a relationship, a passion project that became a career, a trip that went sideways, or a purchase you indulged in? Tell us all about your spontaneous decisions that led to memorable outcomes. If you couldn't make it to our previous pitch workshops, here is another opportunity for you! The *On a whim* live storytelling show is on Wednesday, 24th June. If you’ve got a story or just an idea in mind, come to one of our pitch workshops at the end of May. If your story is shortlisted for the show, our host will work with you as you polish and rehearse it. 📌 Story Requirements: * Your story must be true * It must be told in the first person—you are the main character * It should be between 5-10 minutes You don't need to have a completed or polished story ready - just a beginning idea is okay. This workshop is open to individuals at all levels, first-timers or old hands. The purpose of Hong Kong Stories is to help you become a better storyteller. Everyone has a story to tell, and everyone loves a story. Note: Please update your RSVP, ideally 12 hours before the event if you're unable to make it. Urban Krav Maga is a defence system that: The Urban Krav Maga aim is to equip the student as soon as possible to defend themselves against the most common attacks they may face. Once the student has mastered these techniques more difficult scenarios are addressed to build a support system that will enable the student to deal with almost any situation. By teaching concepts through techniques, students are taught how to read a situation and react/respond accordingly, even if they have not experienced that exact same scenario in training. Giving students the ability to improvise is an important element of our training, this is not like learning a kata. Awareness, avoidance and pre-emption are placed high in order of priority but we recognise that you can’t always avoid a potential violent encounter. We teach everything that is needed for self defence when it’s necessary in all environments, including, highly confined, crowded spaces, cars, shopping centres, nightclubs, buses etc. We make no apologies for our civilian approach to street violence and our subsequent breakaway from the original military solutions in dealing with armed attackers: a knife defence based on somebody attacking like they were making a committed bayonet thrust will not be so effective as one that is based on somebody stabbing with an aggressive pumping/piston motion with fast recoil when we are dealing with today’s street. As stated we retain the term Krav Maga as our approach reflects that on which Krav Maga was originally founded and we are, of course, indebted to the experiences we have gained training with the various Israeli Fighting Systems

Five players took part in our monthly online tournament last Monday--a small number, but a very close finish and some wild exciting games! Next Monday we're back to our face-to-face meeting at the Trafalgar--word is that a couple of members are bringing new people to play, so the turnout is looking strong! You will need to reply within 24 hours or potentially lose your place.** ***Raiders of the North Sea*** is set in the central years of the Viking Age. As Viking warriors, players seek to impress the Chieftain by raiding unsuspecting settlements. To do so, players need to assemble a crew, collect provisions, and journey north to plunder gold, iron and livestock. Glory can be found in battle, even at the hands of the Valkyrie, so gather your warriors because it's raiding season! To impress the Chieftain, you need victory points (VPs), with those being acquired primarily by raiding settlements, taking plunder, and making offerings to the Chieftain. How you use your plunder is also vital to your success. Players take turns in clockwise order, and on a turn you place a worker and resolve its action, then pick up a different worker and resolve its action. Broadly speaking, those actions fall in one of two categories: * **Work:** Having a good crew and enough provisions are vital to successful raiding, so before making any raids, players need to do some work to prepare their crew and collect supplies. This is all done in the village at the bottom of the game board, with eight buildings offering various actions. You must first place your worker in an available building where no other worker is present, then pick up a different worker from a different building. * **Raid:** Once players have hired enough crew and collected provisions, you may choose to raid on your turn. To raid a settlement — whether a harbor, outpost, monastery or fortress — you need to meet three requirements: Having a large enough crew, having enough provisions (along with gold for monasteries and fortresses, and having a worker of the right color. Raiding offers various ways of scoring, such as military strength, plunder, and Valkyries, which is how grey and white workers enter the game. The game ends when only one fortress raid remains, all Valkyrie have been removed, or all offerings have been made, then players tally their scores. Cancer is still a major health concern, even with all the progress in medicine. In this month's talk, we’ll look at a surprising angle: how nerves around and inside solid tumours may be helping cancer grow and resist treatment. We’ll explain, in simple terms, why nerves are found in tumours, how they interact, and how this interaction can influence how fast the disease progresses and how well treatments work. You don’t need a science background to enjoy this talk, just curiosity about how our body’s own systems can sometimes be hijacked by cancer. Please RSVP so we can plan numbers with the venue.

When learning statistics, one of the most fundamental yet usually grossed over concepts is that of **variance** (i.e. the square of the standard deviation in normal distribution). As we know, virtually all statistical operations which measure deviations of individual values from the norm involve adding the **SQUARED differences between the two numbers**. However, very few instructors could explain why we have to use squares rather than just the absolute values of the difference (or other even powers such as 4, if the intention is to avoid the negatives). This tutorial shall cover this in a convincing manner. Secondly, while we all know the variance of a SAMPLE is arrived by dividing (n-1) of the sum of squared differences, where n is the number of observations, few can articulate the rationale behind it. This tutorial shall also prove step by step why this is case, so after this you could appreciate the logic behind this ingenious insight instead of just reciting it like a medieval myth.

It's a game in which you never know where the next stop will be, because it’s all down to the decisions you and your fellow players make. Usually one person is the Game Master (or "GM").
