Urban Krav Maga Hong Kong Tin Hau @ Studio Pamphile
Brand New Weekly Classes @ Studio Pamphile Venue New Location.
Urban Krav Maga is a defence system that:
The Urban Krav Maga aim is to equip the student as soon as possible to defend themselves against the most common attacks they may face. Once the student has mastered these techniques more difficult scenarios are addressed to build a support system that will enable the student to deal with almost any situation. By teaching concepts through techniques, students are taught how to read a situation and react/respond accordingly, even if they have not experienced that exact same scenario in training. Giving students the ability to improvise is an important element of our training, this is not like learning a kata.
Awareness, avoidance and pre-emption are placed high in order of priority but we recognise that you can’t always avoid a potential violent encounter. We teach everything that is needed for self defence when it’s necessary in all environments, including, highly confined, crowded spaces, cars, shopping centres, nightclubs, buses etc.
We make no apologies for our civilian approach to street violence and our subsequent breakaway from the original military solutions in dealing with armed attackers: a knife defence based on somebody attacking like they were making a committed bayonet thrust will not be so effective as one that is based on somebody stabbing with an aggressive pumping/piston motion with fast recoil when we are dealing with today’s street. As stated we retain the term Krav Maga as our approach reflects that on which Krav Maga was originally founded and we are, of course, indebted to the experiences we have gained training with the various Israeli Fighting Systems

May 2026 - Strange Houses - Uketsu
For our fifth book of 2026, we have a Japanese bestselling mystery.
'When a writer fascinated by the macabre is approached by an acquaintance, he finds himself investigating an eerie house for sale in Tokyo. At first, with its bright and spacious interior, it seems the perfect first home. But upon closer inspection, the building’s floor plans reveal a mysterious "dead space” hidden between its walls. Seeking a second opinion, the writer shares the floor plans with his friend Kurihara, an architect, only to discover more unnerving details throughout. What is the true purpose behind the house’s disturbing design? And what happened to the former owners who disappeared without a trace? When a body suddenly appears and a young woman reaches out about a second house, it soon becomes clear that the writer and his friend may be in over their heads.'
This book is available on Kindle. For international delivery you can find it from Blackwells and it may also be available at the library or an English language book store.
We are a "real" book club, which means we do read the book before the meet-up and discuss it. New members are always welcome.
We need to notify the venue about how many will attend, so please make sure your RSVP status is accurate.
Hope to see you there!

Wellness Wonder: Breezy Yoga @Harbour Front
**★ This is a paid event ★**
In this 1‑hour class, we practice gentle stretching and Hatha yoga with mindful breathing, focusing on basic poses, clear alignment and slow, steady movement. The pace is beginner‑friendly, with options to go deeper if you already have some experience, and the goal is to leave you feeling calmer, lighter and more connected to your body.
I didn’t grow up with a sports background, and my body is naturally quite stiff and not very coordinated. That’s exactly why yoga has been so helpful for me. It gave me a gentle way to start moving, and over time it has helped me build flexibility, mobility and strength in a way that feels kind and sustainable. If you feel stiff, out of practice or nervous about joining a class, you’re very welcome here. This session is designed with beginners and “not‑so‑sporty” people in mind.
This class is for you if you:
● Are new to yoga or returning after a break
● Want a simple movement routine without a gym or studio membership
● Prefer small, relaxed groups and a supportive atmosphere
● Are local or travelling and want to enjoy the waterfront with mindful exercise
**About the instructor – Sophia Chu**
Sophia is a 200‑hour certified yoga teacher and practicing landscape architect with experience in hospitality design, giving her a strong eye for space, atmosphere and how nature and cities shape how we feel. She is also a landscape architecture lecturer, used to guiding groups step by step and helping beginners feel at ease.
Originally from Taiwan, she has lived abroad for over two decades, teaches fluently in English and Chinese, and welcomes people from all backgrounds. Since 2021 she has run the social Meetup group Wondering Wanderer and leads yoga sessions with FitFam Hong Kong, creating comfortable spaces for people to move, relax and connect.
**Class fee: HKD 100**
☆ This helps cover the Meetup platform and the tutor’s preparation and teaching time.
☆ Many studio packages in Hong Kong work out to around HKD 120–200 per class, so this HKD 100 community rate is intentionally kept affordable and flexible.
**How to reserve your seat**
1\. RSVP on Meetup
2\. Send payment via Payme or FPS to 9177 1700 and note: “Breezy Yoga \+ date”
3\. You will receive a spot confirmation after payment
**Refund / cancellation:**
Cancellations made more than 48 hours before class can be refunded or moved to another Breezy Yoga date. Cancellations within 48 hours or no‑shows are non‑refundable, as the spot has been held and planning already done.
**What to bring / wear**
● Your own yoga mat
● Small towel (optional)
● Comfortable clothing you can move in
Mats for newcomers (first come, first served):
● 1 soft foam mat (very beginner‑friendly)
● 2 thin rubber mat (more grip for those with some experience)
☆ Please message in advance if you need to borrow a mat.

Cancer, Neuroscience and Peripheral Nerves
Cancer is still a major health concern, even with all the progress in medicine.
In this month's talk, we’ll look at a surprising angle: how nerves around and inside solid tumours may be helping cancer grow and resist treatment.
We’ll explain, in simple terms, why nerves are found in tumours, how they interact, and how this interaction can influence how fast the disease progresses and how well treatments work.
You don’t need a science background to enjoy this talk, just curiosity about how our body’s own systems can sometimes be hijacked by cancer.
Please RSVP so we can plan numbers with the venue.

Book summary:
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a twelve-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
"Metal Slinger" by Rachel Schneider
Join us as we discuss our June pick: Metal Slinger by Rachel Schneider!
Book description:
Even though she's not one of them, Brynn has spent her life among the Alaha, training to be a guard and waiting for the chance to attend the annual market hosted by the Kenta–the very same people who exiled her adopted community to a life at sea. Going to the market is a rite of passage eagerly anticipated by all young guards, but Brynn does not anticipate breaking a century-long peace treaty while there. Nor does she plan for the intense encounter with an enemy soldier that now threatens to unwind the fragile coexistence between their people–and everything Brynn once believed about herself to be true.
Brynn's loyalty to the Alaha is tested when the truth of her identity is brought to light by this soldier who's taken an oath to bring her back to where she belongs. Narrowly escaping death on the violent high seas, Brynn's connection to the Alaha is further tested when she learns about the world of magic she's been denied. She was once certain of her fate and where she belonged, but the dark, knowing eyes of this stranger have her questioning everything, including her heart.
Packed with knife fights and seafaring adventure, METAL SLINGER is the smash-hit start to the romantic fantasy duology, the Fire & Metal series
Shut Up & Write!® East Side Columbus
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 11 at Streetlight Guild.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
**SCHEDULE:**
6:45ish - Quick introductions
7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
8:00 - The End
**OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
**BEING LATE IS OKAY:** just show up and get settled! If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing & I look forward to seeing you at Streetlight Guild!
**WHAT SHOULD I BRING?**
Whatever you need to be able to write! You're welcome to bring earplugs/headphones if noise will bother you!
**OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:**
* **RSVP:** Please RSVP by 6:00pm the evening of the meeting. This helps me know how many to expect, and if we'll need additional space!
* **COVID:** While masks are not required, please be mindful of the other writers around you and their comfort levels.
* **WIFI/OUTLETS:** Outlets are limited, so please ensure your devices are charged when you come! But Streetlight Guild does have free WiFi! Yay!

Columbus Code & Coffee 87 @ Improving
Columbus Code & Coffee is an inclusive, informal co-working session. People of all skill levels attend, and we love it that way. Many people (optionally) bring projects to work on, and many other people (optionally) socialize the entire time. It's entirely up to you!
**What to Expect at the Intro Circle**
\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~
Near the beginning of the event (1:30 pm), we do a standup:
* Organizer announcements, updates, and logistics
Round 1 - (7 secs max):
* Your name
* What you're working on
* What you can help others with
Round 2:
* Community events you wanna plug. If none, that's cool too.
Round 3:
* Job opportunities you're hiring for OR announce that you are looking for one. If none, that's cool.
After the introduction circle, everything is self-organized! Feel free to work alone, pair up, attend one of our workshops/presentations, or mingle!
Jules and Jim, the Book!
By popular demand, the group wanted to read and discuss the semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roche, that inspired the Truffaut movie we watched last year.
The book is available through the Columbus Library's interlibrary loan system. They reported there are twenty-eight copies available in the state of Ohio. If you have a library card, you can file an interlibrary loan request here: https://www.columbuslibrary.org/library-services/ . There are also used copies available on Amazon and eBay for under twenty dollars.
You may want to rewatch the movie after reading the book, so we can compare and contrast in our discussion. The Columbus Library has four copies on DVD, and it's streaming on HBOMax.
