London Clojure Dojo at uSwitch
uSwitch is located on the first floor of the ZPG building at 5 Copper Row, London, SE1 2LH, London (Click on the map for directions)
What 3 words location: [https://what3words.com/puts.sudden.else](https://what3words.com/puts.sudden.else)
The Clojure dojo is a collaborative way to learn Clojure/ClojureScript through practice. The aim is to learn a little more than before you started. This event is for those new to coding through to more experienced developers.
We organise into small groups (2-4) people and write code to solve challenges great and small, chosen by those at the event.
We aim to ensure someone in your group has some Clojure experience, so you shouldn't feel lost (well no more than all developers do when Stack Overflow is broken).
Example challenges for the coding dojo are listed on this website: http://www.londonclojurians.org/code-dojo/
Various past exercises have been loaded to
[https://github.com/ldnclj](https://github.com/ldnclj/lisp1.5/blob/master/src/lisp1/5.clj)
# Approximate schedule:
18:40 Doors open and start collecting suggestions
18.45 Pizza should have arrived
19:00 Quick intros and vote on suggestions
19:15 Break out into groups and start practising
20:45 Gather together for a quick show and tell
# What should I bring?
We organise into small groups, so if you have a laptop with a working Clojure environment please bring it along (there are lots of online Clojure environments, so you can just use your browser too).
# How do I get in to the building?
At the glass doors press the buzzer to inform the security guard you are here. Say you are here for the event on the first floor.
Is there way to talk with the Clojure community?
Why yes. The Clojurians Slack channel is full of friendly people who love to try and help. People based in London are often in the #clojure-uk channel. Sign up for a free account to the Clojurians Slack community via http://clojurians.net/
What is Clojure?
Clojure is a JVM language that has syntactically similarities to Lisp, full integration with Java and its libraries and focuses on providing a solution to the issue of single machine concurrency.
Its small core makes it surprisingly easy for Java developers to pick up and it provides a powerful set of concurrency strategies and data structures designed to make immutable data easy to work with. If you went to Rich Hickey’s LJC talk about creating Clojure you’ll already know this, if not it’s well worth watching the Rich Hickey “Clojure for Java Programmers” video or Stuart Halloway “Radical Simplicity” video .

We are often asked during our woodwork workshops to explain even more about selecting and sharpening chisels for use. This is a chance to immerse yourself into the traditional techniques and procedures.
‘Sharp tools are safe tools’ so the saying goes. So it makes sense to know how to hone your chisels and plane irons to keep them keen and a pleasure to use.
In this practical evening workshop, an expert woodworker will show you how to use a grindstone, which sharpening stones to use, how to use a honing guide to select the exact angle and how to polish your chisels to a mirror finish with a strop so that your woodwork lines are crisp and sharp.
New chisels and plane irons from a factory have a machined edge, but they are not sold ready for use, so extra work is needed to go from a ground to a fine finish.
If you have a chisel you would like to sharpen bring it along and you can use our equipment to give it a new edge. We have plenty of chisels for you to practice with, and we sell sharpening stones and bevel-edged chisels in 6.16 and 25mm widths if you would like a set of your own.
Having expended some patience getting your chisel well-honed, it will not take long to bring it back to sweet sharpness each time you feel it losing its keenness.
‘How often do you have to sharpen your chisel?’ ‘As often as you need to.’
Get in touch with us if you have any questions.
INTRO TO UPHOLSTERY – 1 DAY
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-upholstery-1-day-120/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-upholstery-1-day-120/)

Join us for a fascinating day of discovery as we delve into the fabulous world of upholstery. We will show you how to use all the specialist tools to strip out and untack old upholstery and how to recover a simple modern chair seat to transform your tired furniture into raving beauties.
One of the modules that professional upholsterers have been examined on is the process of making a modern ‘drop-in’ dining seat. You will learn about foam and how to select the correct density and compression rate. By building up foam and applying the additional layers of calico and polyester, everyone learns how to complete the project by tensioning top and bottoming fabric with confidence. In a professional upholstery company, the apprentice learns by making many drop in seats before being let loose on more complicated items.
We begin the day by learning how to strip out old upholstery. You will to learn how to use traditional specialist hand tools to remove staples and tacks from upholstered furniture to prepare for replacing the upholstery.
You don’t have to bring a drop in seat to the workshop, as we provide simple wood panels for you to cover and take home, but if you have a tatty covered stool, or dining chair drop in seat you would like to start work on, we would be happy to show you how to unpick the tacks or staples from it. It is always very enjoyable to see what ‘lies beneath’. It may not be possible to finish recovering your project during the one day workshop, but we will advise you on the next steps and you will gain confidence to tackle simple jobs by working on the wood panel we provide. At the end of the day, you will have a chance to learn how to web a frame using a hand web stretcher with magnetic hammer and tacks.

With passkeys, you can secure user data with your phone's fingerprint scanner, facial recognition or screen lock. No more passwords or third-party auth!
In this talk, I hope to convince you that passkeys are worth implementing in your app, even though it's hard to do so. And I will demonstrate how to do that in Android.
You will learn:
- Why user behaviour makes passwords insecure
- How passkeys solve this, by being inherently immune to phishing, credential stuffing and data breaches
- How to authenticate users using passkeys in Android using Jetpack Credential Manager

**🗣️ Jacob Wang: A comprehensive tour of error handling in Scala**
Errors are part of life - But how best to work with them in our code?
In this talk, I'll take you on a tour of various typed error handling approaches within the Scala ecosystem,
as well introduce a new one for cats/cats-effect ecosystem!
⭐ Jacob Wang ⭐
Jacob has been writing Scala for close to 10 years. He enjoys creating programs that mostly
behave, as well as sharing this joy via open source & teaching.
**🗣️ Jack Higgs: Starship Enterprise: Functional Programming at Huge Companies**
Practicing functional programming inside a Fortune 100 enterprise can feel like flying the Starship Enterprise through asteroid fields of legacy code and bureaucracy. This talk shares hard-earned lessons from the Information Engineering team at JPMorganChase, which runs a production Scala codebase powering a novel metadata platform. We'll explore the political, cultural, and technical friction of pushing functional programming in a Java and Python dominated environment. We'll introduce the domain we work in, the techniques that have worked (and those that haven't), the compromises we've made, and why - despite it all - we still think it's worth it. If you've never tried to run cats-effect in a place where Spring Boot is king, add this talk to your battle log.
⭐ Jack Higgs ⭐
Jack Higgs is a technologist with fifteen years of experience in investment banking, including the past decade at JPMorganChase. He leads teams building metadata platforms using Scala and functional programming techniques. Over the past six years, Jack has worked at the intersection of software engineering, data architecture, and large-scale enterprise systems. Passionate about type safety, functional design, and making abstract ideas practical, he thrives on applying elegant code in messy real-world environments.

Free in-person event: Take Control of Your Mental Health
It’s time to take control of your mental health. How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself.
Have you ever suffered from a traumatic experience, a deep loss or been through a painful breakup? Has your ability to communicate suffered as a result? And after that, even though you "moved on" did you find that things were never quite the same? Have you ever looked at childhood photos, or reminisced your early life and wondered where that happiness and spark went?
Are your emotions out of your own control? Have you ever felt, even if you aren’t aware of it, that possibly you are getting in your own way of your happiness and success? How does this affect your self-confidence?
Find out what is at the root of all stress, anxiety, depression and self-doubt. Find out how and why you hold yourself back from achieving your goals and having the life you have dreamed of. As soon as you learn what is at the root of these unwanted conditions, you’ll see it is something you can DO something about. You will not be labeled or categorized at this MeetUp.

Contra dance Feb. 21 (First Unitarian Universalist Church) note new time!
# **Band: Old Possum's Menagerie; Caller: Richard Ades**
Beginner lesson at 1:30, regular dancing begins at 2:00 pm
NOTE THAT WE ARE TEMPORARILY DANCING IN THE AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF EVENING. Dance with us in the afternoon then you can still go out in the evening!
**Sponsor: All Soles Contra and Square Dancing, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Columbus OH 43214**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 1:30 - 2:00, followed by dancing 2:00 - 430. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
