Scanning Tunneling Microscope - Lab Day - Scanning Run - #14
Today we are Steve's Lab. RSVP and you'll be sent the location. It's in Silver Spring.
***Join us for an evening in an electronics lab where we will attempt to run clean scans of graphene and gold samples, and then clean up that data with post processing.*** This is a high sensitivity experiment, and we do not plan on being successful so early. But we've had promising results lately - so we will be putting in the time. We are NOT meeting at our usual location, but rather at Steve's house/lab.
If you RSVP, you will get a DM with the address but it's located in Silver Spring.
We will attempt full, clean lab - clean tip repeated scanning tests to see what we can learn and improve. We will experiment with online attendees, but if all possible showing up in person is strongly encouraged. Online join link is: - [https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers](https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers)
Our community is building (and documenting for other teams) how to build a scanning tunneling microscope using a mix of common and 3D printed parts. This will allow us to scan and visualize a single atom - an ambitious we are doing over the course of a few months.
The MoCo Makers community is one of the most innovative and competent groups in Maryland, and we've done everything from [publishing cancer research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38136356/), to [launching products](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gotim/cozy-curvy-multi-contour-pillow), [winning grants](https://covidinfocommons.datascience.columbia.edu/awards/2014255), and inspiring thousands.
Now our biggest challenge yet has appeared. We are building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope, that will allow us to scan and visualize single atoms.
To get a better idea of what we are doing, see our reference project here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g)
All starting CAD, code, and reference files should exist. However, let's be the first Maker community to document the build process and share it with learners around the world.
We will be publishing our work here -[ https://hackaday.io/project/202816-qt-panda](https://hackaday.io/project/202816-qt-panda)

Transforming Ingested Data into Voice-Driven Discovery and Reporting with AI
Organizations today are collecting more data than ever before, yet much of that information remains difficult to access, understand, and act upon. Dashboards are often fragmented, reports require specialized knowledge, and valuable insights remain trapped inside disconnected systems. At the same time, advances in AI, speech technologies, and intelligent workflows are changing how people interact with information. Instead of navigating complex interfaces or manually building reports, users can increasingly ask questions naturally using voice and receive intelligent, contextual responses in real time.
In this meetup, we will explore how modern AI systems are transforming raw ingested data into conversational, voice-driven experiences that enable discovery, analytics, reporting, and operational insight. We will examine how enterprise data from documents, APIs, databases, business applications, and event streams can be processed, structured, indexed, and exposed through AI-powered interfaces that support natural language interaction.
The session will cover the end-to-end architecture behind intelligent voice-enabled reporting systems, including data ingestion pipelines, semantic indexing, retrieval strategies, AI orchestration, speech-to-text processing, large language models, and response generation. We will discuss how AI agents can reason over enterprise information, dynamically generate reports, summarize findings, identify anomalies, and provide conversational access to operational knowledge.
You will also see how voice interfaces are evolving beyond simple assistants into intelligent workflow companions capable of interacting with business systems, coordinating actions, and supporting decision-making across departments such as sales, operations, customer service, finance, and executive leadership.
Topics we will explore include:
* AI-powered data ingestion and transformation pipelines
* Semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
* Voice interfaces for enterprise analytics and reporting
* Real-time conversational querying of structured and unstructured data
* AI agents and workflow orchestration
* Intelligent summarization and automated report generation
* Integrating speech technologies with enterprise systems
* Security, governance, and responsible AI considerations
* Practical architectures and implementation strategies
Whether you are a developer, architect, analyst, technology leader, entrepreneur, or AI enthusiast, this session will provide practical insight into how conversational AI and voice-driven systems are reshaping the future of enterprise intelligence and human-computer interaction.
Join us for an engaging discussion, live demonstrations, architecture walkthroughs, and real-world examples showing how organizations can move from static reporting to dynamic, conversational discovery powered by AI.

Quantum Computing for Business (Exploring Opportunities Available Today)
Title: Quantum Computing for Business (Exploring Opportunities Available Today)
Date: June 27 2026 Saturday Noon - 14:00 EDT
Summary:
Big media reports that current quantum computers are not able to attack business problems at scale. In Ron's experience, this is only about 95% true. He has found that certain types of quantum computers, specifically quantum annealers, are very good at solving constraint based optimization problems at business scale.
This presentation will answer the question “What is quantum computing?” by comparing quantum computers to classical computers and describing the various types of quantum qubits. Ron 'll introduce what quantum computers can be used for and what they shouldn't be used for. Next, Ron will look at a number of quantum computing use cases that are currently available to businesses today.
Finally, Ron ’ll present conclusions with a brief discussion of future hardware. There will be time for Q & A.
Speaker: Ron has been fortunate to have worked in a broad range of technical disciplines during his career. Areas in which he developed expertise and innovative results include, digital hardware design, silicon functional architecture (chips), computer language compiler development, and medical software. Ron has recently immersed himself in quantum computing technologies and has obtained more than a dozen certificates across the quantum spectrum. These technologies include various hardware platforms, numerous quantum programming frameworks and quantum sensors. As a co-founder and CQTO of B2Quantum, Inc, Ron has served as a quantum computing Subject Matter Expert (SME) for a large pharma company. As a SME, he performed quantum computing use case analysis, strategic planning, budget guidance and risk analysis. Outside of the technical arena, Ron is a licensed pilot, certified open water SCUBA diver, bicyclist, wood worker and a once in a while artist.

**Speakers**
Chelsea Acheampong (Nova Hospitality): Nova Hospitality is a consumer travel platform connecting conscious travelers directly with verified eco-lodges and community-run properties, redirecting tourism revenue back into local communities through transparent impact verification and direct booking
Cameron Peltz (Caldarium): Caldarium is a health admin tech company building software solutions for medical practices, to automate prior authorization paperwork and detect errors in reimbursement claims, to ensure compliance and reduce their rate of rejection by Medicare and insurance payers, getting patients the medicine and surgeries they need more quickly and reliably, and doctor's offices paid for their properly documented procedures correctly the first time and therefore in consistent better financial health.
Achinth Murali (Open Judgement Engineering): The Open Judgment Engine (OJE) is an open-source methodology and AI-assisted platform that captures the reasoning behind non-routine engineering decisions — when a judgment applies, when it doesn’t, what the expert does, why it works, and what failure it guards against — as structured, attributed artifacts called Judgment Primitives, embedded directly into the workflow gates where engineers already make those decisions. The goal is to make expert engineering judgment portable, searchable, and permanent — so that when a senior engineer retires, the reasoning behind their decisions doesn’t retire with them.

A hand tracker gives you joints, not a gesture.
This talk shows how you get from raw joints to a "thumbs-up" in Unity: the pipeline that cleans up the data, how a gesture becomes a few 0-to-1 values within tolerance, and why orientation matters as much as finger shape.
Includes a live demo of tuning gesture thresholds.

**Abstract**
*Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code*
Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs.
In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling.
The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options.
