Software Crafting & Testing Open Space: Leuven
An Open Space for all things Software Crafting and Testing.
Everyone welcome!
Do you have a passion, interest or curiosity in software development and testing? Great, you're in! Whether you're a seasoned expert or just taking your first steps in the industry, we're pretty sure we've got something for you (and vice-versa).
**Lightning talks**
We start off with lightning talks, where you can give a 5-7 minute presentation about something cool you want to share. These are usually rather informal, so don't worry if you've never done this before - this is a great opportunity to give a talk in a friendly environment.
**The Open Space itself**
We have a couple of rooms where 30 minute sessions are run in parallel. A session can be an informal discussion in comfy chairs, a demo or presentation, practicing katas together, or anything in between. There are no requirements for you before you can join a session - just bring yourself, an open mind and your opinions.
Before the Open Space starts, anyone can suggest sessions about something they want to learn about. Whether you're an expert on some topic, or you're just getting your feet wet, the only requirement to run a session is that you're there to host it.
**A safe space as well.**
Our meetup is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. To enable this, we expect everyone attending to follow the code of conduct at http://confcodeofconduct.com
**Food & Drinks** will be provided by our host of the evening: **AE** \- https://www\.ae\.be
Please pass along your dietary restrictions or allergies to Thibaut De Cremer via the SocratesBE slack: https://socratesbe.org/slack
Debate Night: Remote Work
One of the defining changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is the proliferation of remote work, alternatively known as telework or work from home. Technology had been advancing to the point that many jobs could be done at least in part from home. With a work laptop, video calling, a stable internet connection, and a cyber security program, many office jobs can be done at home without any serious hindrance. When COVID started, many white collar employees became full time remote workers. Six years after the start of the pandemic, many of these people still work at least in part from home.
Recent years have seen rising skepticism about remote work, particularly among management. Questions have been raised about whether people working from home are as productive or efficient as those in the office. Similarly, whether work culture can be as effectively created with people often working from home has also become a topic of discussion.
Long story short, remote work is, to some degree, here to stay. But to what degree? Do the costs outweigh the benefits? Come discuss this at Brussels Debaters!

Body, Movement and Silence: An Experiential Workshop
**Body, Movement and Silence: An Experiential Workshop**
By Katerina Ioannou
Brussels, 25 March 2026
Register here: https://www.imaginationclub.org/brussels/body_movement_silence.php
In this workshop, we’ll explore how we express ourselves and connect with others — not through words, but through our bodies, movement, and the space between us. We’ll play with simple exercises that invite spontaneity, imagination, and a sense of presence. There’s no right or wrong way — just what feels true for you in the moment.
What you might discover
\* New ways to listen — to yourself and others — without relying on language.
\* A sense of freedom in expressing what’s alive for you, however it wants to emerge.
\* A shared moment at the end, where we reflect with a word or image on what moved us.
**Who it’s for**
This is for anyone who wants to explore, play, and see what unfolds when we let go of expectations. No experience is needed—just come as you are.

**20:30** *CSS State Machine* — Brecht De Ruyte

**22:00** Wrap-up
***
**Talk 1 — Beyond the Spec: Cranking View Transitions up to 11 (Safely, Maybe)**
**Bramus Van Damme (Chrome DevRel @ Google)**
*Abstract:*
Ever wondered what happens when you push the View Transition API beyond its documented limits? This talk throws caution to the wind and explores the wild side of View Transitions, cranking them up to 11. We'll combine them with Scroll-Driven Animations, trigger them automatically with MutationObserver, and even resurrect classic Internet Explorer’s Page Transitions using this modern API. Prepare for unconventional use cases, unexpected results, and a healthy dose of experimentation as we venture beyond the spec. If you're a web developer who loves to tinker and push boundaries, this is the talk for you.
**About Bramus:** Bramus Van Damme is a web developer from Belgium. From the moment he discovered view-source at the age of 14 (way back in 1997), he fell in love with the web and has been tinkering with it ever since.
As a Chrome Developer Relations Engineer at Google, he spreads the word on CSS, UI, and DevTools. Before joining Google, Bramus worked as a freelance developer in various front- and backend roles. For seven years he also was a College Lecturer Web & Mobile, educating undergrad students all about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript — in that order.
In his spare time Bramus likes to go Scuba Diving. In 2016 he became a certified PADI Master Scuba Diver, and in 2017 he became a professional dive leader after finishing his PADI Divemaster training (Certification #405966).
***
**Talk 2 — CSS State Machine**
**Brecht De Ruyte**
*Abstract:*
For years, managing UI state on the web meant reaching for JavaScript. But in 2026, CSS has quietly become a state machine of its own. Pseudo-classes track interaction. Media queries read environment and user preferences. :has() observes the DOM tree. Container queries respond to size, style, scroll position, and even anchor placement. Scroll-driven and scroll-triggered animations react to where the user is on the page. And with sibling-index(), CSS can now respond to what's happening next door.
In this atypical "overview" talk, you'll get a practical tour of the CSS features that let you keep and respond to state — from things you can ship today to the cutting-edge stuff landing in browsers right now. Welcome CSS, to the state machine.
**About Brecht**:
Brecht De Ruyte is a Belgium-based, self-taught front-end developer with a deep-rooted passion for UX and design. By day, he crafts digital experiences at iO; by night, he helps shape the future of the web as a Google Developer Expert and a contributor to the W3C Open UI community. A guest author for Smashing Magazine, Brecht shares his technical deep-dives and UI experiments at [utilitybend.com](http://utilitybend.com/).

**Raff Di Meo**
Senior Product Design Manager at Optimizely.
Raff has spent over 10 years designing products across startups, agencies, and enterprise SaaS, including a startup acquisition. Today, he's a Senior Product Design Manager at Optimizely, where he leads a team of designers reshaping how marketing teams create content across the web.
He's an active speaker in the UX community and writes Some Designers on Substack, championing inclusivity and supporting designers through a profession that won't sit still.
**————————**
**About the Talk:**
**————————**
**When too easy to use becomes a problem: from e-commerce returns to AI in design**
A few years ago, Raff designed a returns flow for an e-commerce product. It was fast, frictionless, and users loved it. It also helped normalise a behaviour that cost businesses millions and generated thousands of tonnes of waste. By every metric tracked, it was a success. By every metric not tracked, it was a disaster.
Today, the same pattern is playing out. Not just in the products we design, but in how we design them. Teams are reshaping their entire process around AI tools that can't even retain their own users. We're told the old ways are dead. Move faster. Ship more. Trust the tools.
In this talk, Raff will share what the returns project taught him about the gap between a successful design and a responsible one, and how those lessons are shaping how his team is navigating AI right now: what they're using, what's genuinely working, and what they're deliberately protecting.
You'll leave with three things you can take back to your team: why understanding the problem still comes first, how to explore with AI without losing your craft, and a dead-simple habit for catching unintended consequences before they ship.

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
**Abstract**
Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively.
This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way.

ServiceNow's Got Talent
Builders, creators, architects, admins, consultants - come one, come all. This one's for you.
We're bringing a little friendly competition to the Columbus ServiceNow community while highlighting the cool things people have built on the platform.
Five presenters will take the stage to showcase something they've built, solved, designed, or imagined on the ServiceNow platform - and a panel of judges (plus YOU, our amazing audience) will score them live.
So basically, America's Got Talent but make it ServiceNow's Got Talent.
Bring a notepad if you'd like 'cause you'll definitely be learning something new.
Each presenter gets 10 minutes max to wow the crowd with:
• A demo
• A real-world business solution
• A bold idea
• A UX transformation
• Or a creative use of the platform
Judging Criteria:
🏆 Business Value
🚀 Innovation
✨ User Experience
This event is about celebrating ideas, sharing knowledge, and showing how ServiceNow can drive both business impact and meaningful user value.
Come learn. Come support. Come get inspired.
Refreshments and bites will be provided.
And maybe next time… you’ll be on stage.
