**TALK 1. Testing Unsafe Rust**
Unsafe Rust code is sometimes necessary for performance or functionality reasons. But without the compile-time safety net of the borrow checker, extra care is needed to get the code right. This talk shares some useful testing tools and techniques to help evaluate the correctness of unsafe Rust.
**TALK 2. Mechanical Sympathy in Rust Performance Optimization**
Modern computers are fast, but nuances of their design and implementation can have profound impacts on program speed. This talk, based on the author's work contributing performance improvements to the Rust compression library zlib-rs, describes how a closer look at the hardware’s strengths and weaknesses can help make fast software even faster.
**ABOUT BRIAN**
Brian Pane spent his career leading the development of networking and infrastructure software at companies including Roblox, Pinterest, Dropbox, and Facebook. After retiring, he now focuses on open source Rust software.

Dublin's Newest Language Exchange
Most language exchanges are built around **movement**. —fast rotations, brief chats, surface-level conversation.
New table. New person. Start again.
It feels productive. It isn’t.
Real conversations don’t happen in 10 minutes.
They start there. Then they get interesting.
At Flip Lingoes, **you stay.**
Same table. Same group. Enough time for real conversation and real connection, beyond the surface level.
Every 5 minutes, you switch roles: **fluent speaker ↔ learner**, not people.
Before you arrive, **[create a profile here](https://www.fliplingoes.com/language-exchange-dublin/)**[,](https://www.fliplingoes.com/language-exchange-dublin/) tell us what language you're learning.
This helps our **automated matching algorithm** put you in the right small group.
No awkward searching. No guesswork. Simply scan the QR code on arrival and it automatically matches you with fluent speakers of your target language.
We host events at Zanzibar Locke: calm, well-designed, easy to hear, easy to focus.
***
**Event Flow**
6:45–7:15 → Seamless check-in (QR code, get matched, sit down)
7:15–8:30 → Language Exchange (structured, focused)
8:30 → Optional social + snacks included
**Crispy chicken wings. Cheesy loaded nachos.** Straight from Zanzibar Locke’s kitchen. Perfect for chatting, relaxing, and refueling after a great language session.
**Entry:** €8 (tasty snacks included)
**Bundles:** 4 events €24 \| 10 events €50\, purchase [here](https://www.fliplingoes.com/language-exchange-dublin/?pricing_filter=in_person#bundles-section) in advance for express check in. Save time and money.
**Be generous and invite a friend for free:**
It's simple. Create a profile [here](https://www.fliplingoes.com/language-exchange-dublin/), log in, and click “**Invite Friend** to sign up.” It generates a link and you send that to them. Easy and your friend will thank you later ;)
If they register for the event before you, you both get free entry.🙌
\*P.S We ask if you consider to buy a drink at the bar upon arrival and support their venue and excellent hospitality in the heart of Dublin.
***
**Why Flip Lingoes works:**
* Go deeper: longer conversations at the same table
* Speak with the right people via automated matching
* Smooth, calm, focused environment
* Fun social finish
If you’re tired of restarting conversations and want to **actually speak beyond the greeting and small talk**, this is your place.
[Flip Lingoes](https://www.fliplingoes.com) is a new and innovative language exchange event, with a clear vision: **To upgrade language exchange events online and in cities around the world.** Currently in Dublin, Zurich and Online. **Can you guess our next city?**

Wednesday Meet-up in D8
There's been a bit of demand for a meet-up on the south side of the city so we're going to trial a new location.
You'll find us in the main bar.
This is a casual meet up for people who want to play boardgames. Lots of people bring plenty of games and rules will always be explained so don't worry if you're new to the hobby and you don't have anything to bring along or think you won't know how to play.
Late comers always welcome, you just might have to wait a little for a game to open up.
**The meet ups are free of charge but we do ask that people support the bar by buying food and/or drink. The bar is very accommodating to us and it's important that we support them in return. Bringing in outside food or drink is completely unacceptable.**
Check out the comments below where people will say what games they are bringing and express your interest in joining if interested
Mountain Skills 1 Course
***Mountain Skills for Only €120 / course***
Ever wanted to learn the skills you need to become a competent navigator in the Irish mountains, the UK, the Alps or beyond!
As a fully qualified mountain guide and course provider for Mountaineering Ireland and the UK, I run Mountain Skills which is a nationally accredited course and is delivered in an upland environment.
Hiking in Ireland can be challenging not only because of its wilderness, but the island has very little sign posted hiking trails in the mountains or hills. In addition to this, as being an island in the Atlantic we experience the forces of nature; storms and weather events. In other words, Ireland is probably the best place in Europe to learn a new outdoor skill like Mountain Skills.
The aim of this course is to help you learn the skills you need to get out hiking in the hills and mountains independently, safely and responsibly. You will learn how to navigate with confidence by any type of weather conditions.
A Mountain Skills course is run over 2 days in an upland environment and covers:
Map reading, map description, map scale, contour lines, land and ground features, navigation legs, simple navigation techniques, setting the map, the 5 D, estimation of direction & destination, grid reference, mountain hazards, hypothermia, mountain environment, timing, pacing, route planning, route card, emergency procedures, personal equipment, safe movement skills, river crossing and much more…
Some level of fitness is essential in taking part in this course.
Each course (MS1 / MS2) is a 20 hour syllabus which includes indoor and outdoor sessions and night navigation (MS2)
**A course includes:**
Maps and compass provided, tea breaks, course notes, 3 route cards, a free hiking day practice as part of a weekend.
**For Only €100 for under 18 and students and €120 for adults.**
Accommodations can be provided

OpenClaw: Getting it alive
OpenClaw is having a moment. A personal AI agent that runs on your own machine, talks to you and actually gets things done.
**NOTE: Registration needs to be completed here: [giveago.co/register/openclaw-1](https://giveago.co/register/openclaw-1)**
It runs on your own machine - a Mac Mini, a Raspberry Pi, a VPS - and actually does things: runs commands, browses the web, manages files, talks to your apps. You reach it through WhatsApp, Telegram, or whatever chat app you already use. It works in the background, remembers context between sessions, and connects to whatever AI model you prefer.
No engineering background required. If you can install an app and follow a guide, you can do this.
We're running this as part of a three-event OpenClaw series this June, with this being the first. The following events build on the setup and focus on getting productive with the agent and applying it to real work use cases.
**NOTE: Registration needs to be completed here: [giveago.co/register/openclaw-1](https://giveago.co/register/openclaw-1)**
We'll be working through it together at Baseline, tables of people at different stages, helping each other along. Fresh install or halfway there, there's a spot for you.
The goal is simple: leave with OpenClaw alive. Connected to WhatsApp or Telegram. With a personality you've written. Doing at least one real thing.
What we'll work through together:
* Getting OpenClaw set up (locally or hosted)
* Connect to a messaging app: WhatsApp or Telegram
* Picking the best model for the job
* Writing a SOUL.md: giving your agent a personality that's actually yours
* Setting up a MEMORY.md layer
* Connecting one real skill before the day is out
**NOTE: Registration needs to be completed here: [giveago.co/register/openclaw-1](https://giveago.co/register/openclaw-1)**
Prep materials will be sent in advance. Come ready, or come from zero. Both are fine. Bring a laptop. That's it.
Run of show:
11:00 Doors open, coffee
11:30 Intro and setup overview
12:00 Build time
13:00 Lunch
13:45 Back to building
15:30 Share what you've got running
16:00 Close
**NOTE: Registration needs to be completed here: [giveago.co/register/openclaw-1](https://giveago.co/register/openclaw-1)**

All Things Search! — Deep Dive into Search, Lucene & Atlas Search
Search is one of those things that *feels* simple — until you're the one building it.
Why does `$regex` fall apart at scale? How do you handle typos, relevance, and performance all at once? And what happens when users search by *meaning*, not just keywords?
Join the **Dublin MongoDB User Group** for an evening dedicated entirely to **Search** — from the foundations of Apache Lucene, to building production-grade search experiences with MongoDB Atlas Search, to the frontier of Semantic Search with vector embeddings. We'll also have a real-world use case walkthrough from someone who's been in the trenches solving search problems for customers.
And yes, you can walk away with an 🎖️ **Search Fundamentals Skill Badge** 🎖️ which you can share on your LinkedIn profile.
No laptop needed, just your phone!
***
**🛠️ What we're covering:**
**The "Why" — Search is Hard** A practical look at why developers struggle with search: fuzzy matching, relevance scoring, tokenisation, and why regex just doesn't cut it.
**The "Story" — A Real Use Case** Hear from a practitioner who's helped customers go from "this search is broken" to "this actually works." Less Lucene textbook, more honest problem-solving.
**The "How" — Atlas Search Deep Dive** We'll go under the hood on how Atlas Search (built on Apache Lucene) works, and show you how to wire it up in your own applications.
**The "Future" — Semantic Search** Beyond keywords — how vector embeddings and semantic search let your application understand what users *mean*, not just what they *type*.
***
**📅 Agenda (6:00 PM – 09:00 PM)**
* **6:00 – 7:00 PM \| Networking & Pizza 🍕**
* **7:00 – 7:30 PM \| Search 101: How Search Actually Works** From text indexing to Lucene — the fundamentals every developer should know.
* **7:30 – 8:00 PM \| Real\-World Search Use Cases** What does bad search look like? What does great search look like? Stories from the field.
* **8:00 – 8:30 PM \| From Generic Search to Atlas Search & Semantic Search** How MongoDB Atlas Search brings it all together — and where vector embeddings take you next.
* **8:30 – 09:00 PM \| Search Fundamentals Skill Badge 🎖️ \| Open Discussion & Networking**

BullIsland Beach Volleyball :)
Hi all, lets meet at 12h to play Beach Volleyball in BullIsland, near the car park on the "Statue of Our Lady, Star Of The Sea" side of BullIsland. From Clontarf Rd cross over "The Wooden Bridge" and keep going on until the end, turn left when you see the beach car park and keep going to the left. We will set the nets beside the car park 😉 Please avoid to park at the beach because the car can get stuck on the sand. If you come by car park as soon as you find space and then walk.
The idea is to have lunch at the beach and play beach volleyball. Please bring water, sun glasses (for the sand more than the sun) and sun cream (even when it's cloudy you can still get burned with the wind).
I would love to create another lovely healthy group to have fun with and enjoy the weather whenever it's possible. All levels are welcome because the goal is to have fun and do some exercise.
Any questions please contact me over the phone: 0876819433, or put a comment on this Meetup. Please bear in mind that on the same day of the event it'll be driving so give me a phone call if you are lost.

Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code - Alan Barber
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge.
**Abstract**
*Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code*
Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs.
In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling.
The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options.
