W&OD Trail, Western Section (ODH Training Hike 14)
This is an out-and-back hike on the western portion of the 45-mile **W&OD Trail**. The trail was once the Washington & Old Dominion (hence, the acronym) Railroad that ran from Alexandria to Bluemont, at the foot of the Blue Ridge, from 1859 to 1968! Unlike the eastern, suburban end, the western end of this trail passes through some particularly attractive pastoral areas. Here are some [photos](https://photos.app.goo.gl/WsggsmW91P32dnhc9) from 2013. (Seems like yesterday.)
Starting from the trail parking lot in Ashburn (mile marker 27.5), you may do anywhere from 19 miles (very difficult) by going to MM30 and back, or 35 miles (pain in the feet and elsewhere) by going to the end at MM45 and back. If you do less than 19 miles, that's OK too. It’s perfect for ODH training in that you can gauge exactly where you are in your regimen.
Much of our route has an adjacent gravel trail. Although meant primarily for horses, you may enjoy walking on it more than its paved counterpart…but watch where you step. The end of the trail in Purcellville has the conveniently located Sweet Rose Bakeshop, full of goodies. Keep a nostril out for the aroma as you get closer.
**TRAIL MAPS & INFORMATION:**
Here are some links that you may find helpful: [Bike Washington section map](http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/wad.htm), a [bit of history](https://rb.gy/k4mxop), and Friends of W&OD [overview](https://wodfriends.org/trail-map/) maps.
**WHEN & WHERE:**
We'll meet at 8 AM at the [W&OD Trail's parking lot](https://rb.gy/urc70d), which is just north of the trail off the east side of Ashburn Road. Look for the sign shown in the photo above. You may use the [Carolina Brothers Pit Barbeque](https://rb.gy/yz0sym) (also shown in the photo above) in your GPS for directions, but the trail's parking lot is just north of that on the east side of Ashburn Rd. Do NOT park in the restaurant's parking lot.
**WHAT TO BRING:**
Bring food and drink, or $$ to buy on the way. You’ll proceed at your own pace and you may stop (or not) anytime to eat. This hike occurs rain or shine, cold or warm, so dress appropriately. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are recommended, as well as electrolyte replacement, such as a sports drink, to complement plenty of water. In case of hazardous weather, please check here for last-minute changes before leaving for the hike.
**LEADERS:** Gary Kosciusko (Novahiker@cox.net, 703-946-8111) and Ellen Hill (EllenWHill@Gmail.com, 703-994-9493)
**ONE DAY HIKE:**
Although open to all, this training hike is part of a series of Saturday training hikes leading up to the **[One Day Hike](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac/events/304791832/)** (ODH)—100 or 50 km along the C&O Canal—on May 2, 2026. See this website for other training hikes as they are posted. If you would like to support the ODH, see [volunteering opportunities](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac/events/304792694/) and/or contact Mike Darzi (Mike.Darzi@Gmail.com). The Poolesville Ramble with Sugarloaf Option
Arrive at 9:30 am
Pedal at 9:45 am
Join us for this scenic ride with great views of Sugarloaf Mountain, pristine farmland, and peach trees along Peach Tree Road.
There is also an option to go up Sugarloaf Mountain. Doing so, would add another 6 to 8 miles and 350 feet of climbing. We can decide at the beginning of the ride if we want to add the Sugarloaf Mountain climb.
This route is a long time favorite of local cyclists with its use of lightly traveled country roads through Western Montgomery County's Agricultural Preserve area.
After the ride, we can go either to Rockland Farm Winery for a much-deserved glass of wine and pizza or to Bassett's Restaurant.

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: What Digital Detectives Find
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“What Digital Detectives Find,”** on the afterlife of your digital data and the methods of those who investigate it, with Jim Jones, associate professor at George Mason University and cyber security and digital forensics expert.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-digital-detectives](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-digital-detectives) .]
What happens when you delete digital data such as a picture, video, or email message?
The truth is that “deleted” doesn't mean “gone,” and digital forensic investigators can extract and make sense of the residual fragments left over from data often assumed to be gone forever.
Learn about the field of digital forensics—and the lessons it offers those who worry about sensitive data being exposed—with Jim Jones, who has been a cyber security and digital forensics practitioner, researcher, and educator for more than 30 years.
You’ll learn how all investigations today, criminal and otherwise, to some degree involve digital forensics, an interdisciplinary field that draws from computer engineering, computer science, information technology, law, and ethics. Digital forensics doesn’t just respond to specific incidents, but also seeks out threats within organizations, analyzes malware, and buttresses cyber security. Much of the work of Dr. Jones, his colleagues, and students involves examining digital systems of all types to understand how data persists and decays and how it can be found and recovered.
Dr. Jones will discuss how what happens to the digital data that you deleted depends on the type of device you are using, along with a host of other factors. You'll learn how digital data is stored on different devices and what does and doesn’t happen when you delete that data. You'll see examples of data extracted from different devices, demonstrations of what can be inferred from these remnants, and how investigators can tell if such remnants are genuine or not.
Finally, you'll learn about strategies to mitigate the risk of exposing sensitive data. Dr. Jones will sort those that work from those that don’t. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

(Trailhead) Hike: Broad Run, Bristow, VA (Bluebell Hike)
Trailhead Hike &Wildflower Hike:
Although we normally view the well-known bluebells at Bull Run Regional Park at this time of year, the bluebells of Broad Run are much more abundant and the trails are less crowded. Many other varieties of wildflowers can be viewed along this surprising enclave south of Gainesville and west of Manassas, VA. This hike includes a tour of the monastery grounds which contain well maintained gardens and numerous other statuary and amenities.
Hikers will begin at the Benedictine Monastery public parking lot, visit the gardens, labyrinth, silos of peace, and the sisters' and children's cemetery. The hike will proceed over the old farm rubble/culvert bridge turning RIGHT on the paved riparian wetlands trail back to the trailhead structure.
While admiring a profusion of bluebells, all trekkers will hike the loop behind Victory Lakes neighborhood back to the trailhead structure (\~1.7 mi.) then proceed under the Linton Hill Rd. overpass. The bottom land past Linton Hall Rd. will expose you to the best flower experience! Hikers will continue to Sudley Manor Rd.
After a short (0.1 mi.) dogleg left, hikers will cross the busy road (Warning: Look Both Ways!!!) and proceed along the west side of Broad Run, past the gated Dumbarton community. At the bridge intersection proceed straight to the power lines doubling back past the Dunbarton Clubhouse back to the bridge intersection. At the bridge, cross RIGHT and proceed thru the Virginia Cedar forest completing a partial loop between Broad Run and Rocky Branch. Hikers will turn RIGHT along the east bank of Broad Run for an out-and-back to the end of the forest path then turn past to the bridge to Sudley Manor Rd. and carefully cross (look both ways!!!).
Long/Moderate/Optional: Continue straight along the west bank to the park benches at the end. Most of the bluebells are at the end of this spur. One can stop and turn around at any point along the way.
Hike back to Sudley Manor Rd., then turn RIGHT a short distance (0.1 mi.) on the hike & bike trail. Turn RIGHT to the Broad Run Trailhead structure and track downstream along the river's east side back under Linton Hall Rd. At the riparian wetlands bridge, STOP.
Turn LEFT along the riparian wetlands stream on the south-east side of the monastery until spotting the gated Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto on the LEFT. Visit the grotto, then proceed along the traffic circle back to the public parking area and the end of the hike. You are welcome to enjoy the monastery gardens at the end of the hike.
And please enjoy the Waderbirds social, refreshments, and snacks!
Park map. Est.: \~12.2 mi. (Long & Moderate), 10.0 mi. to 11.5 mi. (Options), \~6.0 mi. to 8.5 mi. (Easy, self-led), <300 ft. elevation.

Bluebells are especially abundant along the Potomac’s floodplain, drawing hikers and nature lovers to this annual spectacle. Here, Potomac River abruptly plunges nearly 80 feet through a series of rapids, carving a narrow, mile-long gorge with sheer walls. E-biking from Sycamore Landing to White's Ferry with E-bike Lovers
[https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34720279](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/34720279)
23 miles. Toilets in the beginning, middle and the end of the trail.
From Sycamore Landing, we e-bike on the C&O towpath to White's Ferry, where the group stops at the Potomac River for a picnic. The ferry has a restaurant known for its pickle burger.
From the ferry, we return via River Road in Montgomery county's rustic farmland. The scenery is particularly fine everywhere along this 23-mile round trip. We will be biking in hilly terrain at the end of the trail. Most of the trail is flat.
See also: https://ebikelovers.com/2021/01/17/trail-4-maryland-e-biking-from-sycamore-landing-to-whites-ferry/
This event will be a combined towpath and farmland ride to Whites Ferry, originally designed by David Winer, former chair of the Friday biking group. Whites Ferry is out of commission, but this doesn't affect the ride as we will not cross the Potomac.
We meet at 10:00 a.m. at Sycamore Landing. We leave at 10:15 AM.
See the map above for the ride route and directions to reach the parking lot at Sycamore landing. The Meetup map guides you to the Sycamore Landing parking lot as well.
**Nota Bene: By car, the turn from River Road is 16 miles from the I 495 Beltway, and the parking lot is all the way down this dirt road next to the canal towpath.**
The scenery is particularly fine everywhere along this 23-mile round trip.
The riding surface beside the C&O canal is typically packed clay/gravel except near Whites Ferry, where it has been reworked into a smoother path. The route through the Montgomery Agricultural Preserve is a seldom-traveled road of packed gravel similar to the towpath's surfaces.
Lunch: Brown bag at picnic tables overlooking the Jubal Early car ferry. Snacks and sandwiches are available at the adjacent store.
The group stops a few times for slower riders to catch up. The distance will be some 22 miles or shorter any time you are fully satisfied with biking for the day.
**Please remember to charge your bike, check your tires and brakes, and consider packing an extra tube.**

About the C&O Canal:
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal operated from 1831 until 1924 along the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland. The canal's principal cargo was coal from the Allegheny Mountains.
The canal’s roots begin with George Washington’s dream of a waterway trade route. 74 locks were built.
About White's Ferry:
Historic White's Ferry is the last of 100 ferries that used to operate on the Potomac River. This ferry, named after the confederate Civil War General Jubal A. Early, connects Whites Ferry Road in Montgomery County, Maryland with a road by the same name in Loudoun County, Virginia. The cars line up on what looks like a boat ramp and drive down onto the ferry. Once loaded, the ferry follows a wire cable to the other side of the Potomac.

Bike Month Kick-off Ride
May is National Bike Month... so let's kick off the 2026 riding season with this casual, family-friendly, 6-mile loop. Join us to discover Rockville's diverse bicycling infrastructure -- including paths, bridges, and tunnels you probably never knew existed.
We will be riding on shared-use paths and quiet residential streets at a pace of 10 to 12 mph. Please come with your bike in proper working condition. Before arriving, please pump up your tires, check your brakes, lube your chain, and take your bike for a test spin.
Elected and appointed Rockville city officials will be formally invited to ride also. We will meet in the parking lot of Rockville City Hall.
RAIN DATE: Sunday, May 3, 2026
READ THE FINE PRINT, PLEASE:
• Bicycling involves inherent risks and requires that participants be in proper physical condition. When you RSVP "yes" to a Bike Rockville event, that RSVP is your digital signature attesting that you have read, understood, and agreed to the group's Liability Waiver and Release, located here: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BocKiaMJwba62c7b583CoOxIYamFiaWN/view?usp=sharing](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BocKiaMJwba62c7b583CoOxIYamFiaWN/view?usp=sharing)
• HELMETS ARE REQUIRED for all riders on every ride.
• We strongly recommend you bring a water bottle, spare tube, cell phone, ID card, and cash or credit card for emergencies.
• Rain at start cancels the ride; Wet pavement does not.
