Mudhole Gap, VA. - Winter Backpacking
This is a short one overnight backpacking trip, NO A DAY HIKE, not a cabin/car camping event, we will be carrying on our backs all what we need whit us from star to end of trip.
Maybe your pass-of-right if you have never winter backpack before and want to test your cold weather gear.
Considered an easy/moderate backpacking trip in Spring, Summer or Fall, not such thing in winter conditions.
PS: The first 3 miles will totally kick you'r behind due to elevation gain so be ready, the rest will be easier.
At 13 miles the Mudhole Gap loop isn't as difficult as a lot of shorter hikes. After we compete the first 3.8 miles to the ridge line near Meneka Peak the remaining 3/4 of the hike is either downhill or mostly flat, with the exception of a gradual ascent on the back loop. Little Passage Creek that runs through Mudhole gap is beautiful in the spring when the water is running with snow melt, I have never be there in cold weather conditions, this will be my first full winter visit.

Winter Solstice Poetry Hike at Sugarloaf Mountain
Celebrate the passing of the seasons and the return of the sun on our Annual Sugarloaf Winter Solstice/Poetry Hike, an Adventuring tradition since 1997. This year we're able to do this hike on the actual day of the Solstice--Sunday, December 21, 2025.
After varying the routine a bit last year, we will return to our usual 7-mile circuit, with lunch at White Rocks and climbing to the summit near the end. Expect some climbing and a variety of terrain, including some rocks. During our White Rocks lunch, we’ll share favorite poems in honor of the passing of another year.
Meet at 9 a.m. at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station. So we can plan accordingly, please answer the Meetup questions about whether you’ll be meeting us at Grosvenor-Strathmore or Sugarloaf, and whether you can be a carpool driver. Those wishing to drive directly to Sugarloaf should contact Chris Craig for directions and time; you can email him directly at [ccraig@laurellodge.com](http://mailto:ccraig@laurellodge.com/). We'll all rendezvous by 10 a.m. in the West View parking lot—the one at the top of the drive.
Bring a bag lunch (we will NOT be stopping at a Sheetz on the way), water, sturdy shoes, the $5 Adventuring fee, $5 to reimburse your carpool driver — and most important, a poem to share on the mountaintop (your own or someone else's).
\>\> Please [click here](https://adventuringlgbtq.com/Adventuring_Release_Form.pdf) to review our release form. When you RSVP to an event, you affirm that you have read and agree to the terms of the release.
Rock Creek Loop (8.1 miles, 817 ft elevation)
Let's enjoy the current warmer weather with a hike this Sunday in DC's Rock Creek park! This one’s for all the car-free DC folks, those who want an short morning drive with easy parking, and anyone who wants to explore one of region's great urban parks.
This is a moderately challenging hike due to its length (rather than elevation). We’ll move at a steady 2-3 mph pace with breaks as needed. Water and bathrooms are available at the start, and may also be available a few miles into the hike, but please carry a minimum of 1L with you.
Start location: we’ll meet at Picnic Grove 24 across from Rock Creek Tennis Center [https://maps.app.goo.gl/wUMV6UqH7GKsDBbA8?g_st=ic](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wUMV6UqH7GKsDBbA8?g_st=ic)

Parking: Free and plentiful
Transit: Several buses go past this location on 16th Street. You can pick them up from Silver Spring metro (red line) or various metro stations in downtown DC.
Bikeshare: the nearest dock is at Colorado Ave & Longfellow St NW per Google.
Meet time: We'll meet at 9:30 am at the location noted above and, after intros, start hiking the trail shortly afterwards.
There is no official after hike meal planned. For those that which to gather informally, the hike leader recommends Moreland's Tavern, which is an easy walk from our meeting point: [https://morelandstavern.com/](https://morelandstavern.com/lunch/)

We look forward to hiking with you!

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: How the Nutcracker Came to Life
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“How the Nutcracker Came to Life,”** on the roots of a classic holiday story, with Brittany Warman, former instructor at Ohio State University and co-founder of The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/nv-nutcracker](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/nv-nutcracker) .]
We’ve been telling versions of the story of “The Nutcracker” for more than 200 years, and our cultural attachment to it hasn’t wavered. But many who watch it performed on stage or screen, or hear it played by a symphony, don’t really know much about how the story was originally told or how it came into being.
Let Profs and Pints take you on your own magical journey to learn about the origins of “The Nutcracker” and its characters. Your guide on this scholarly adventure will be Brittany Warman, whose fantastic talks on folklore, myths, and legends have earned her a big following among Profs and Pints fans.
She’ll begin by looking at the life and work of E.T.A. Hoffmann, the writer who started it all with his Christmas fairy tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” We’ll examine what inspired him to write the story, as well as how he tapped into fragments of existing folklore, the spirit of German Romanticism, and a sense of the uncanny to create the tale’s sugar plum fairies and clockwork castles.
The tale begins on Christmas eve with an extravagant spread of gifts, including a nutcracker. A young girl named Marie, enchanted with the doll, begins an adventure where toys come to life, an evil Mouse King must be defeated, and good and love triumph. Christmas is a time for magic and wonder, and the story that became known simply as “The Nutcracker” joined other holiday stories that have endured in capturing a sense of imagination and whimsy. Like many of the season’s other beloved tales, it also bore a hint of danger.
Brittany will explore the history of nutcrackers and the fascination—and, sometimes, fear—that dolls inspire. She’ll show you how “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” ties into Hoffmann’s other works, and she’ll lead you through some of the adaptations of the story, from theater to film to fashion.
In a season when “The Nutcracker” is performed everywhere, her talk will help you derive much more enjoyment from the show. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

ADMO National Cathedral Hike
This will be a brisk-paced hike with an approximate pace of 2.5-3 mph. This 5.1 mile loop starts from Pitango Cafe (1841 Columbia Rd NW) in Adams Morgan. We will walk Normanstone Parkway in Woodley Park to the National Cathedral and return to ADMO via the Tregaron Conservancy in Cleveland Park. Walking surface will be dirt and asphalt trails and sidewalks. Bring plenty of water and some snacks. Dress in layers, and be sure to wear sturdy, comfortable footwear. Well-behaved, leashed dogs welcome. Brunch in ADMO after the hike is an option.
This is a joint hike between the ADMO Hiking Club and the Sierra Club. All hikers will be required to sign the Sierra Club waiver form to participate. Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (SCPRO) appreciates a voluntary $2 per person donation to support our many volunteer-led activities. Also, you can become a Sierra Club member by clicking "join" on the Virginia Sierra Club website: [http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia](http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia)
Dupont Circle is the closest Metro stop (.6 miles). Bus routes C51, C53, D70, and D74 are all within a couple blocks of Pitango. There is metered and free street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Please arrive early so you have enough time to find parking.
Pre-Christmas Hike to National Cathedral via Cleveland Park
Sunday will be sunny and 50+ degrees - much better weather than today. We will hike to the National Cathedral from Cleveland Park. Our hike will combine glorious architecture, one of the most expensive neighborhoods in DC, the least-known best trail in the city, and a shortcut through the woods past the International School on to Macomb Street.
The Cathedral will probably have some great holiday decorations. There is a manger scene but that might not be accessible without buying a ticket.
This route will be modified from the path we followed last month to the Cathedral. The featured photo is from a hike earlier this Spring. John kindly updated the map to parallel the route we take.
The hike has some uphill stretches going to the Cathedral but tame stuff mostly.

❶ **What we'll do:**
* Let's meet at Cleveland Park Metro (on the formerly TARGET side of Connecticut Ave NW) and walk down Connecticut Ave NW, cross at the Kennedy-Warren, follow Devonshire and Courtland Pl NW to 29th St NW, and follow 29th St south to Cleveland Ave SW. We'll turn right onto Cleveland Ave NW and follow in northwest to Garfield Ave NW, turn left, and follow Garfield to the cathedral grounds.
* After walking through the cathedral grounds we will exit on the north side, go down Woodley to Klingle, and then head down the Klingle Valley Trail. There is a dirt turnoff that leads via twists and turns up past the Washington International School and over to Macomb St NW, coming out very close to Cleveland Park Library. From there we will follow Connecticut Ave NW back to our startng point.
* Total distance is roughly 4 miles and should take slightly over 2 hours. The surface is mostly paved. It's uphill 266 ft to the Cathedral, fairly level in the Cathedral area, and then a downhill jaunt to Rock Creek and uphill 46 feet back to the Metro, for a total of 312 feet elevation gain.
* Google map: https://tinyurl.com/3zpy9aeh
❷ **How to get there:**
* Metro: Cleveland Park Metro Station is on the Red Line.
* Driving: The street address is 3599 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC, and there is parallel parking available on surrounding streets:
○ From the north, along the I-495 Beltway, take the MD-185S / Connecticut Ave exit and drive south 5.1 miles on Connecticut Ave. The meetup location will be on your left.
○ From south of the Potomac, cross Arlington Memorial Bridge, turning right onto the ramp for Rock Creek Parkway/Kennedy Center. Merge onto Ohio St and turn left onto Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway NW, staying to your left onto Rock Creek Parkway/Shoreham Dr and continuing onto 24th St NW. Turn left onto Connecticut St NW and the meetup location at Cleveland Park Metro Station will be on your right, just past the zoo.
❸ **What to bring:** Water, comfy shoes, and your furry friend if desired. Dogs must be leashed at all times.
❹ **Weather:** The forecast is sunny and 50s. Updates here: https://tinyurl.com/mrywcdte
