Profs & Pints DC: What Digital Detectives Find-Door tix avail.
**Advance ticket sales have ended but plenty of additional tickets remain available at the door.**
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“What Digital Detectives Find,”** on the afterlife of your digital data and the methods of those who investigate it, with Jim Jones, associate professor at George Mason University and cyber security and digital forensics expert.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-digital-detectives](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/dc-digital-detectives) .]
What happens when you delete digital data such as a picture, video, or email message?
The truth is that “deleted” doesn't mean “gone,” and digital forensic investigators can extract and make sense of the residual fragments left over from data often assumed to be gone forever.
Learn about the field of digital forensics—and the lessons it offers those who worry about sensitive data being exposed—with Jim Jones, who has been a cyber security and digital forensics practitioner, researcher, and educator for more than 30 years.
You’ll learn how all investigations today, criminal and otherwise, to some degree involve digital forensics, an interdisciplinary field that draws from computer engineering, computer science, information technology, law, and ethics. Digital forensics doesn’t just respond to specific incidents, but also seeks out threats within organizations, analyzes malware, and buttresses cyber security. Much of the work of Dr. Jones, his colleagues, and students involves examining digital systems of all types to understand how data persists and decays and how it can be found and recovered.
Dr. Jones will discuss how what happens to the digital data that you deleted depends on the type of device you are using, along with a host of other factors. You'll learn how digital data is stored on different devices and what does and doesn’t happen when you delete that data. You'll see examples of data extracted from different devices, demonstrations of what can be inferred from these remnants, and how investigators can tell if such remnants are genuine or not.
Finally, you'll learn about strategies to mitigate the risk of exposing sensitive data. Dr. Jones will sort those that work from those that don’t. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Monday Moves-- Catholic University and POI
DCC's "Monday Moves" to Catholic University and Points of Interest
Join DCC and Conte’s Bike Shop (Navy Yard) for a fun 25+ mile ride to the US Capitol, Union Station, the Lincoln mural, Catholic University, Brookland, Chuck Brown Memorial Park, the U.S. National Arboretum.
This ride is geared towards our newer riders (with a chill pace and no one left behind), but all are welcomed. The ride is on streets, trails and sidewalks. There will be a safety briefing to help riders become more comfortable with riding in groups.
We will meet at Conte’s Navy Yard Bike Shop at 10 am and depart at 10:15.
All riders should bring their own hydration and nutrition, as well as a spare inner tube.
*** Please, no music that can be heard by other riders or ear headphones that impede your hearing.
Parking is limited at the Navy Yard, so for those driving, an option is to park at Anacostia Park (aquatic center) and take 11th street bridge to M Street, then a left on 4th.
****all riders ride at their own risk****
If there is a chance of inclement weather expected on Monday, a cancelation notice will be posted by 9:00 pm on Sunday; otherwise, the ride will take place.

Annapolis Library Spring Film Series: Hollywood on the Potomac
*Join us for a look into the idealism, ambition, compromise—and sometimes scandal---that shape national politics. The films we’ll be viewing present the clash between principles and practicality while exploring what it takes to gain, wield and hold political power. Each film is introduced by area cinephile **Ann Glenn** with info about the film’s background and production and followed by a lively Q&A session*
\*\****Wag the Dog*** *(1997) Monday, April 13, 5pm*
This over-the-top satire about two spin doctors who distract the public from a political scandal by creating a fake war, is one of the funniest films about politics ever made. With spot-on performances by Dustin Hoffman (who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar) and Robert De Niro, the film reveals how media manipulation, and manufactured narratives, can shape public opinion. *1 hr. 37 mins., Rated R*
Maxwell Park Wine Bar, DC 🍷 Monday Apr 13 Blind Wine Tasting (#28)
PLEASE READ AS THERE IS AN IMPORTANT CHANGE for the blind tasting at Maxwell Park only: prepayment will be required. Please note that refunds for cancellations are allowed up to 12 hours before the event start time. (This would be 6:15 AM so best to cancel the night before and definitely as soon as you know.)
Please bear with me as we navigate this new process. The real maximum number of attendees will remain at 14, but since the Meetup App won’t let me make it a requirement to pre-pay when you RSVP "Yes," I’m not going to set a cap on Meetup's RSVP list, and we will see how that goes.
Because there is no linkage between the Meetup App and Maxwell’s prepayment link, you can’t rely on Meetup's RSVP feature to know if there are still spots available. You will only know with certainty that the attendee cap has been reached if you are rejected while trying to prepay.
Here is the pre-pay link:
Let me know if you have any specific questions. Thank you for your patience as we transition to this new process!
Maxwell Park is 4 blocks from the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center.
🍷 RSVP Please:
--**If your plans have changed, please change your RSVP to No.**
*Note start time of 6:15 PM!* Please plan to arrive on time.
🍷 What is blind wine tasting?
In a blind tasting you use your sense of smell, sight, and taste to try to deduce which variety(wine grape) is in your glass.
🍷 Do I need to be a wine professional?
Definitely not - this group is experience diverse and we welcome both wine newbies and wine pros (and everyone else in between).
🍷 How does this work?
--Please arrive slightly before 6:15pm to grab a seat.
--Maxwell Park will serve us two wine flights: 3 white wines around 6:20 pm and 3 red wines around 7:30 pm. Each flight is $20. A 20% gratuity and tax is added to that. Food and other wines are also available for purchase.
--We will discuss each flight as a group and try to reach somewhat of a consensus. Then comes the *big reveal* where we discover if our guesses were right.
Full vaccination is required, masks are optional. Unfortunately, while we will try to be as careful as possible, we cannot promise that this will be 100% Covid risk free, please keep that in mind when deciding whether or not to attend. Stay home if you are experiencing any symptoms of Covid 19. Please keep an eye on this event for possible changes.
Hope to see you there !

Charcuterie Board: Meaty Board Game Night
_Games this month_: Terraforming Mars and 2-3 other great games!
**A note from the organizers:** We see that this is becoming a popular event and so there's not a ton of space available for general non Patreon members rsvp'ing via meetup. Space is limited by how many volunteers we have to host games each month, and first access goes to the members of the Patreon who support everything DCGG does. We have the goal to train and provide additional staff for this event as we gain capacity.
**Note: If you are a member of the Patreon and have already secured early access via the form you do NOT need to RSVP on Meetup.**
By popular demand and with the amazing friendship of the Highbinder Bar, we are introducing the **Charcuterie Board!** These are meaty games for experienced tabletop players or players who are comfortable with complexity.
**About the Games**
This series will focus on bringing experienced tabletop fans and meaty games together. These games will include titles with rulesets that are a bit more complex, take a bit more time, and are often strategic and competitive.
DCGG will curate the games and provide trained game hosts to help get games going quickly and make sure all players are supported as they learn and engage with the games.
The month's games will be in the title of this event.
**Who this event is for:**
Self-declared board game enthusiasts and/or people people looking to get into the hobby of tabletop games. While our game hosts will be there to help explain the game and rules, this event is targeted at players who are comfortable learning lots of rules and dedicating a few hours to a single game. And as always, DCGG enforces polite and healthy play spaces.
**Not into complex games or just not ready for the meaty games?**
Please explore our other events, such as Meat You at Fat Pete's or Rhythm and Brews, which have more party-focused and easy- to mid-level games.
**What if we don't have enough players?**
Through the power of teamwork and friendship, we will find a way for everyone to play and have a good time. **Please arrive on time, or else your space will be forfeit (cuz we often cant wait for people to get games going).**
**BUT WAIT THERES MORE:**
If you are interested in becoming a Supporting Member and enjoying perks like:
* **Early RSVP Access:** Supporting Members will get early access to RSVPing to regular events.
* **Town Hall meeting:** Supporting Members will be invited to participate in town halls and polls that will help determine how revenue past operating costs is directed.
* **Discounted Ticket:** In the event that DCGG hosts paid ticketed events in the future, Supporting Members will be offered discounted prices.
* The knowledge that you make all this possible!

👽🎬 E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL
📡 ***He is afraid. He is alone. He is three million light years from home. But does he still capture hearts in 2026, or is he a relic of the past?***
**👋 Hey guys,** we’ll be watching the re-release of **Steven Spielberg’s** classic, **E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial**, and seeing if its magic still resonates today. If you haven’t seen this film, chances are you’ve heard of it. Perhaps this is your time to see if it lives up to the hype the past!
The premise follows a gentle alien botanist stranded on Earth who befriends a lonely 10-year-old boy named Elliott. Together with his siblings, Elliott hides E.T. from the government while helping him "phone home" to be rescued, forging a deep psychic and emotional bond.
We’ll be meeting at the **Look Dine-In Cinema Bar at 6:30 PM**, for a catch-up before heading over to **Screen 7**. I’ll be in **seat E9**, but feel free to sit wherever works best for you.
After the film, we’ll regroup for commentary and a **[Letterboxd](https://letterboxd.com/movieroadhouse)** chat, it’ll be a fun, laid-back evening overall.
**Look forward to seeing you guys then!**

⚰️🎬 LEE CRONIN'S THE MUMMY
🗿 ***For those seeking a night of supernatural thrills, A Night of Ancient Horror could be just the antidote… but beware what you may unleash.***
👋 **Hey guys!** This new project by ***[Evil Dead Rise](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqQNO7BzN08)*** director **Lee Cronin** is already generating a lot of buzz. While plot details are mostly still under wraps, it’s described as a fresh and terrifying take on the classic mummy mythos — possibly focusing on ancient evils and the horrors that follow.
Oh, by the way, **this film isn’t connected to the old Universal Mummy franchise** starring **Brendan Fraser** or the more recent **Tom Cruise** reboot — it’s a completely standalone horror film.
So here’s the plan for our Friday Night Mummy Meet-Up! We’ll kick off the weekend vibe with drinks before the movie and share some of our favorite horror films from the past. After the screening, we’ll reconvene for a **[Letterboxd Page](https://letterboxd.com/movieroadhouse/)** review and a good chat.
I’ll confirm the exact date, time, and location in the Tysons area as we get closer to the date, so keep that evening free for ancient chills and some great shared company.
If you’re into horror and curious to see how Cronin reimagines a classic monster, this is one to look forward to.
**Looking forward to seeing you guys there**

· A Boy and His Dog · by L.Q. Jones ☼ online event
The world of 2024 is a wasteland after a nuclear apocalypse, and a young man wanders looking for food and… well, you’ll find out. His telepathic dog helps him with his search, and it isn’t long before he finds what he’s looking for. Hwever, it won’t be nearly as good as he thinks it will be in this sleazy and sordid feature that’s garnered a cult following in part from the early starring role for Don Johnson that he’d probably prefer that everyone forgot.

· The Fare · by D.C. Hamilton @ Beatley Library
There’s a distinct “Twilight Zone” feeling to this expertly crafted movie. A taxi driver searches a desolate road looking to pick up a passenger. When he finds her, she gets in, and they converse politely until the passenger suddenly disappears. A minute later, the driver is at his original location, searching the same road for the same passenger. Events repeat again and again, but subtle variations intrude on the seemingly endless cycle, and therein lurks the remarkable story. Intelligent writing and convincing performances make this a memorable taxi ride.

In 1940 an English inventor develops a machine that can receive radio/TV broadcasts from the future. She uses it to further British efforts in WW2, but as always in time-travel and time-manipulation tales, there are unforeseen consequences. This would have been an impressive feature if financed by a major studio, but the meager budget available for this indie mandated filming techniques that make the story even more compelling.

City Lights (1931)
In *City Lights*, Chaplin's Little Tramp meets a blind girl selling flowers who mistakes him for a wealthy man. When he learns that an operation may restore her sight, he sets off to earn the money she needs to have the surgery. He also befriends an alcoholic millionaire who only recognizes him when he is drunk. When the blind girl and her grandmother fall behind in the rent and face eviction, he tries working and even enters a boxing competition to raise the money they need.
Regarded as Chaplin's masterpiece, *City Lights* has been ranked on more than seventeen "100 greatest movies of all time" lists. Orson Welles cited it as his favorite picture.
*City Lights* is available for streaming on Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBOMax, Tubi and PlutoTV. The Columbus Library lists three copies on blu-ray and eight copies on DVD. Watch the movie on your own, then join us upstairs at East Market to discuss the film.
CMG Gives Back: Serve Brunch at FAITH MISSION GRANT KITCHEN!
Join us as we get together to get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event! We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event:
FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces.
PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area. Below are some links / attachments with additional info/details:
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing all of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please try to update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1
week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve. Our Partner Agency for this event is Lutheran Social Services! A huge THANK YOU to all of YOU for volunteering at this (and any of our previous) CMG Gives Back events!
Should be a good/fun/meaningful time together, Dan

Drunken
This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism")
Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war).
Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!
