Join VOF staff for a springtime guided hike through the Bull Run Mountains to learn about the native ephemeral flowers that grow within our forested mountain plant communities. We invite you to experience the Preserve as an open-air museum, connecting yourself with this protected resource and its history, both natural and human. Learn about the cultural uses that the people of the Bull Run Mountains' past had for some of these beautiful flowers as well as what they planted and left behind as "wisdom plants" or indicators of human use on the land. **When?:** Sunday, April 19th, at 10:00 AM **How Long?:** No longer than 3 hours, traveling about three miles on the eastern side of the Preserve's trail system and stopping to look at flowers. This hike is considered a moderate level of difficulty; it's mostly level with two significant hills along the way. **Where?:** Meet at the trailhead kiosk at the end of Beverly Mill Drive **What to Bring:** sunscreen, bug spray, hiking shoes, water, and snacks! **What to Know:** No facilities, but there is a porta-john on-site in the parking lot. Please leave your canine friends at home, as there are no dogs allowed at this Preserve. (We do this to limit the spread of invasive plants and to keep the Preserve as wild as possible.) Celebrate springtime with a 10 mile hike with 700' of elevation gain showcasing two lakes, wildflowers and a botanical garden. We will begin at the South Lakes Village Shopping Center in Reston, and take Reston paths to the W&OD equestrian trail, which we will follow easterly until the intersection with the Meadowlark Connector Trail. That trail leads to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, operated by NOVA Parks. We’ll walk for about a mile through the gardens to see flowering plants, the Korean Bell Garden and a koi pond. After a lunch break, we’ll backtrack but this time follow the W&OD paved path part of the way. From the W&OD to the South Lakes Village Shopping Center we’ll take a different route, looking for wildflowers as we hike through a stream valley and up and down hills on unpaved trails, including the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail. If we’re lucky, wood poppies and wild azaleas will be in bloom along our route in Reston as they were at approximately the same time last year: The final segment will be on mostly asphalt paths along Reston’s lakes Audubon and Thoreau. Overall, about 60 percent of the hike will be on paved surfaces. We hike at a pace of between 2.5-3.0 mph when moving, but the loop through Meadowlark Botanical Gardens will be a stroll with stops. Restrooms are available at the South Lakes Village Shopping Center and at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, and there’s a porta potty along the W&OD Trail at roughly the halfway point between Reston and the gardens. Calling all Nature lovers.... Join us as we venture outdoor and record our findings in the form of Nature Journaling. Nature Journaling is a way to slow down, look closely with heightened awareness and curiosity at our natural surroundings and record aspects of our experience. No artist ability necessary! Documentation of our findings can be done by drawing, sketching, taking photos, making "marks on paper", by writing about what we observe or describing feelings or thoughts that are awakened by the findings. This mindful study and journaling of our experience allows us to deepen our appreciation and felt memory of the natural beauty that surrounds us. **Hike:** We will do a short hike (approx. 1.5-2 miles) in a figure eight at an artist's pace as we appreciate our surroundings, spring flowers, the beautiful Potomac River, and nearby ruins. We will make stops along the way to journal. Surface is natural with roots & gravel. **Bring:** a notebook or journal with semi-hard or hard cover (for support in holding and journaling); desired journaling supplies of choice (pencil, eraser, color pencils, pen, etc.); something to sit on (opt., ie. a folding/collapsible stool, sitting pad, etc.); phone for camera (opt.); hydration; snack; sunscreen; insect/tick repellant; sunhat; comfortable clothes and shoes that are weather appropriate. **Cost:** $20 for parking or free with a National Park Pass.
