BECKENHAM & BROMLEY MYN VIRTUAL PUB EVENING
We hold two pub evenings a month on the first and third Wednesdays, with all the other Wednesdays being virtual pub evenings. We also normally have a monthly quiz on the last Wednesday of the month, during the virtual pub evening, at about 9pm, where a different member of our group prepares the questions to be used each month.
This means that tonight is a virtual pub evening but incorporating a quiz.
Contact Roland in advance, preferably by e-mail, so that he can send you a link to click on at the start of the meeting. Please note the different arrangements for the first and third Wednesdays of the month.
Scarecrow in a Garden of Cucumbers (1972)
Scarecrow in a Garden of Cucumbers is a musical comedy that follows aspiring actress Eve Harrington, as she moves from Kansas to the big city of New York, embarks on a series of misadventures and meets a collective of crazy local characters. Oh, and she happens to be played by a trans actress, a pretty big deal then as it still seems to be now. It stars Warhol acolyte Holly Woodlawn\* and features guest spots from Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin and David Marguiles (the mayor in Ghostbusters).
The easy comparison would be John Waters, but to my eyes this looks like it has more in common with the kind of subversive, chaotic early 70's urban comedies made by Milos Forman (Taking Off) and Brian de Palma (Hi, Mom!). It's a rare screening of an obscure cult movie which looks like a hoot IMO, and besides, it was either this or Swingers at the PCC.
Anyway, this is a Bar Trash movie, which means a 20 minute-plus intro, an intermission, spot quizzes and an air of outrageous campness throughout. It's not for everyone, but I really appreciate the unusual film choices and passion that goes into this (not to mention the opportunity to watch a movie in a bar). And it's only a fiver including booking fee!
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oZwy-Dc7Hk
Tickets: https://www.genesiscinema.co.uk/event/106842
The event kicks off at 8.45pm but we can meet a little earlier, say 8.15pm, in the bar to grab a drink and get a decent seat.

English Pronunciation And Rhythm For High-Stakes Professionals In London
**Read this before you RSVP.**
This workshop is for a **very specific type of person.**
You are a **non-native professional in London.**
You can do your job in English.
You can join meetings, present slides, speak to clients.
But when it really matters - **presenting to senior leadership, negotiating with clients, interviewing for a promotion, speaking to investors** \- you know your English does not sound as **clear, confident or natural** as you want.
In your native language you feel **sharp, credible and relaxed.**
In English you sometimes feel **flatter, more tense and less convincing.**
You might notice that:
* You have to repeat yourself in important meetings.
* People interrupt you or talk over you.
* You slow down or overthink your words when you are under pressure.
* You worry that your **accent, pronunciation or rhythm** makes you sound **less senior** than your actual level.
If that sounds like you, **this workshop is for you.**
I'm Michael Roberts.
I grew up with a **speech impediment in English**, so I know what it is like to be judged on how you sound instead of what you mean.
After fixing it and learning multiple languages, I created the **British Accent Method** to help non-native professionals and pilots speak **clear, confident English in high-stakes situations.**
This is **not** a general English class.
It is not about more grammar or more vocabulary.
It is a **practical, focused session** where you will:
* **See** how your current pronunciation and rhythm affect your credibility when you speak English.
* **Hear** which sounds, weak forms and stress patterns make your English harder to follow in fast meetings and presentations.
* **Discover** how native speakers use English rhythm to sound natural and in control, and how you can copy that **without losing your identity.**
* **Practise real phrases from your professional life** with live feedback.
We'll look at situations like:
* Presenting to **senior leadership or a board.**
* Explaining complex ideas to **non-technical stakeholders.**
* Handling **difficult questions** in English.
* Introducing yourself and your work in a way that sounds **confident, not rehearsed.**
You will leave this workshop with:
* A **clear understanding** of what in your current pronunciation and rhythm is holding you back in high-stakes situations.
* **Two or three specific changes** you can start using immediately to sound clearer and more senior.
* A **simple plan** to keep improving after the event.
This workshop is for non-native professionals in London in fields such as **finance, consulting, tech, law, medicine, engineering, academia and entrepreneurship.**
If you already speak English well, but you know that **how you sound is not yet matching your level of expertise, this is for you.**
If you only want free general English practice or casual conversation, **this is not the right event.**
**Format:**
* Small group.
* Short teaching sections.
* Live examples and practice.
* Time for questions about your specific situations.
If you read this and thought **'this is exactly my problem'**, reserve your place and I will see you there.

Hello everyone,
For February Vandoos, we shall be heading to The Barrowboy & Banker at London Bridge! A popular pub in London Bridge, The Barrowboy & Banker serves fresh ales, craft beers, a seasonal menu, and pies in stunning surroundings near Borough Market. Located right beside London Bridge Station and just across the bridge from Monument Station, the pub is easily reached by the Jubilee, Northern, Circle, and District Tube lines, City Thameslink, and National Rail lines. Be on the lookout for the Meetup mascots when you arrive.
See you soon!
David Mathews
Leader - The London Canadian Expat Meetup Group
About the London Vandoos
The Vandoos is a group of like-minded and unlike-minded Canadians who get together on the 22nd of each month (or near about) at a selected London pub to meet new people and catch up with old friends. Guests and "honourary" Canadians are always welcome. The London Vandoos was originally formed as a Yahoo group and is the social arm of Network Canada.
Past Network Canada President Dave Mathews organizes the monthly Vandoos Meetups. The evenings are very similar to the Monthly Monday night wings event... without the wings!
The venues are announced roughly six to eight weeks prior to the event. Keep the 22nd of each month circled, something will be happening around that date!
Hope to see you at a Vandoos gathering soon!

Hackney Writing Circle Thursday 26th February
The MILDMAY CLUB, Newington Green
Hackney based publisher, Indie Novella, are hosting a monthly in-person Writing Group in Stoke Newington, London. This is open for anyone working on a novel who is looking for a supportive group to provide advice and help to take it forward, be it if youâre struggling with writerâs block or youâre looking to submit to a literary agent and want to bounce around some ideas.
The format will be in two parts. The first hour will be led by Indie Novella editor and author, Damien Mosley, focusing on a specific writing related topic. The first week at the Mildmay Club this will be the challenges of structuring our novel and we can discuss issues we face regarding plotting or where to begin or share examples which inspire us. The second hour each month will be dedicated to peer reviewing a sample of our writing.
Authors Rose Diell and John McMenemie spoke of the importance of Writing Circles in helping writers develop at Stoke Newington Literary Festival and as such we hope this monthly space will allow writers to convene and share their experiences.
Those interested please do come along. We do review one of the group's work each month and we can add you to the email list if you email [info@indienovella.co.uk](mailto:info@indienovella.co.uk).
